I really need to get around to playing Uplink. I love how dark the setting is. It does a really good job of illustrating just how bad the Residence Cascade was for everyone involved. One of my favorite details is how the zombies get smarter towards the end. We see this through then setting traps/ambushes, and gathering bodies. It would be awesome if they became smarter depending on their group size. Too bad that was completely dropped.
There’s a mod called Signal Lost (unfortunately I haven’t played it you. I definitely need to) where this one lady was remaking Uplink and some of the cut chapters using various cut ideas, older enemy models, and other stuff like that to flesh out the chapters. Hopefully the mod becomes complete. She included the female scientist who was supposed to betray you. Same goes for the Panther Eyes. Not sure if she’ll include Mr Friendly or not (that is probably one of Valve’s weirdest ideas for an enemy). I’m excited to see how that mod develops.

I have that mod downloaded but only played it half an hour. Anyways, I dont think the enemies have become smarter, those are just scripted sequences imo. Uplink is a great chapter that manages to condense all the horror, military and scientific themes present in HL

Yeah, in terms of ai they aren’t smarter, but the scripted sequences do a great job of making them feel smarter. I saw a few things talking about ai in games and it said a good chunk of making enemies feel smart is the presentation. If there’s good level design that plays into their strengths, the enemies telegraph what they’re doing really well (stuff like the FEAR soldiers screaming about everything that happens or overly exaggerated animations that tell the player what the ai is thinking) and staying alive long enough for the player to see these traits all add to the experience. Too bad games don’t really focus on smart ai anymore.
It’s really impressive what the woman who’s making Signal Lost is able to accomplish with HL1’s dated engine.

When I first found out about this back in the 2000's, it really blew my mind. I was fully into hunting for HL single-player stuff like Opposing Force, They Hunger, USS Darkstar, et. and this was a revelation.
I really hated the fade-to-black ending to Uplink, though.

Good point man, Uplink ending is quite lackluster, mb they could have added an Egon gun in the room that you could use to dispatch the Gargantua. Thx for your nostalgia contribution too!

I played the crap out of this and was my first introduction to Half-Life. I still play through it now and again when I need a HL fix but can't be bothered to get into the full game.
