The First General Election of Independent India, held in 1951-1952, was a monumental event that marked the beginning of a thriving democratic system in the country. This historic election introduced universal adult suffrage, granting every eligible citizen the right to vote regardless of their gender, caste, religion, or socioeconomic background.
The Election Commission of India, headed by Sukumar Sen, was responsible for organizing the massive electoral process. The commission had to register millions of voters, set up polling stations, and ensure a fair and transparent election.
Organizing elections on such a large scale and conducting them in a free, fair, and transparent manner was no easy task. One of the initial challenges was India's vast population, which stood at 360 million at that time. When the Constitution was enacted, India embraced universal adult suffrage, making 173 million people above the age of 21 eligible to vote. However, 85% of this eligible population was illiterate. This posed a significant challenge in identifying, naming, and registering voters. To address this, the election introduced the use of symbols to represent political parties, enabling illiterate voters to identify their preferred candidate.
Despite the challenges faced, the first general election witnessed an impressive turnout. 45. 7% of the eligible population walked out of their homes for the first time to exercise their right to vote. India became the largest democracy in the world, with a government elected by the people and for the people.
In this significant electoral process, the Indian National Congress emerged as the largest party, leading to Jawaharlal Nehru becoming the first Prime Minister of independent India.

I feel that our great grandfathers were more disciplined, respectful and charismatic in every way possible back then . I mean politics and politicians had a certain respect and class unlike today when politicians falling to new lows everyday. There may be many flaws and drawbacks back then, but you can't buy the class that educated people and politicians had at that time .
Who knows How many people are forcefully voted to Congress at that time.
They were the most free and fair elections at that time. You can see these sort of visuals from back to 1945 because of the fair, responsible and transparent election commission.

Congress accepted partition of India without population exchange on the basis of two nation theory. So that partition remained incomplete. Even Ambedkar was in the favour of population exchange. After the enactment of Indian constitution in 1950 the muslims stopped moving to Pakistan but hindus,sikhs,dalits,christians etc continued to come to India, even today. So Jinnah was the actual winner. After enactment of Constitution Ambedkar once stated to a BBC reporter that Democracy will never come in India.
I fondly recall story of my grandfather who had "bhareet bhakri" party in our ancestral fields and had accurate prediction with his mastery over drik panchang circa 51-52 😊😊😊
