  • "West End Girls" is a song by British pop duo Pet Shop Boys. Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the song was released twice as a single. The song is influenced by hip hop music, with lyrics concerned with class and the pressures of inner-city life which were inspired partly by T. S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land. It was generally well received by contemporary music critics and has been frequently cited as a highlight in the duo's career.
The first version of the song was produced by Bobby Orlando and was released on Columbia Records' Bobcat Records imprint in April 1984, becoming a club hit in the United States and some European countries. After the duo signed with EMI, the song was re-recorded with producer Stephen Hague for their first studio album, Please. In October 1985, the new version was released, reaching number one in the United Kingdom and the United States in 1986.
In 1987, the song won Best Single at the Brit Awards, and Best International Hit at the Ivor Novello Awards. In 2005, 20 years after its release, the song was awarded Song of The Decade between the years 1985 and 1994 by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. In 2015 the song was voted by the British public as the nation's 12th favorite 1980's number one in a poll for ITV.
The song was performed by Pet Shop Boys at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony and was included as part of the soundtrack of the 2013 game Grand Theft Auto V on the Non-Stop-Pop radio station.

I discovered this gem this year.
I am 29 years old and French.
    - Fan of Depeche Mode and loving synth-pop like Yazoo, Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys, Laser, OMD, Erasure, Bronski Beat etc
I find this song very transcendent, captivating.
I so wish I had lived in that era.

I used to play this version in 1984 when I was a DJ. I always thought it was the better version. Bobby Orlando rules... ;-)

I still remember the day I first heard this version. I lived in long Island and I heard it on WLIR. I was seventeen back then; today it still remains one of my favorite songs of all time.. Thank you DJ DeeN for sending me back to the best years of my life.

I remember WLIR back then when they play nothing but imports, mostly British and this one came along. Recorded on my cheap blank tape where the radio played, it is phenomenal. It sounds a bit weird on this version until I got the cassette album few years later. The album version is different but I didn't care, it sound good. But I'm surprised I found this version. Now my childhood is complete. Thanks WLIR. The station that dares to be different...😊👍

This version is a BAJILLION times better than the one that was rereleased. Wow how my life would have been different if this was the version they stuck with (well, not really, but you know what I mean). Thank you so much for the upload. I can't stop listening to it..

This is the original and superior version. Once the inferior album version came out, this one disappeared from the radar, much to my frustration. But here it is again!

I remember this version before Steven Hague re-recorded it. Dang, I miss this mix. It's a bit new wave and poppy but at 6:28, someone is talking, like I thought it was a DJ or commercial. The Steven Hague version has the female vocal and very soothing...

Now THIS is the real version of this song.
I remember making mix-tapes on TDK, Maxell and Memorex metal cassettes and playing them back on my Walkman with those little puffy earphones.
    Thanks for the upload.

A year before the Pet Shop Boys came to fame with West End Girls, there already had been a version that was produced by the legendary Bobby Orlando. I have uploaded that version here. Ben Liebrand made a vinyl transfer as nowhere a true master copy of this recording could be found. He tried with the Japanese producers, bugged 2 German companies and even consulted the source, mister Orlando's management in the States, but unfortunately no real master. So this pretty much is the best possible copy there is, minus the quality loss due to RUclips audio compression. BR

Thank you for this information and despite the quality loss this is a better version than what was included in the latest compilation released by Cherry Red Records, "O" Record Classics V.1 - Passion.

@@gameswecan That's good to know....I got this song from the CD that was compiled by Ben Liebrand (Grand 12 Inches series). I'll look for Blank & Jones So80s CDs. I am a sucker for high quality sound and good production. Thank you.

The cover are much misled - The original cover was much more colurful and shows Chris with black'n'white sunglasses (westend sunglasses) which appeared on the old Bobby O B-side! But the remix by Bobby O are outstandingly good and epic!!!

Hello Lars, thank you for clarification. My maxi single is in plain generic cover, so I did not have a reference. I used an image I found on internet to attach it to this song, for illustration purpose only. Regards, DJ DeeN
