Many sounds of this track don’t fit into the mix. Some are too loud or not properly EQed, lots of disharmonies before the first verse on the pad sounds, the drums are way off at times and destroying the rhythm. Whoever mixed this track was either drunk or deaf.

My wife and I were traveling on vacation last week and this version came on Sirius XM's 1st Wave channel, she never knew there was an original version of West End Girls, she really liked this version. I love both version, the original is funky, danceable and raw while the album version (common version) is polished, atmospheric and has a melancholy vibe to it.

This is my favorite song of all time! This is the OG version KROQ used to play and then when all the other radio stations followed suit, it was replaced by a shorter, more polished, "sexy-smooth" version. Never again was the original played on radio after the new version came out. Some of the lyrics were changed and my favorite parts like the cowbell and the synthesizer sounds that sounded like they were saying I don't want it, I don't want it, u,u,u,u were replaced by horns and some lady. I can't believe I found this version, I didn't look hard enough before. This made my day, it made me feel good, it made me feel happy 🙂 Thank you Pet Shop Boys, KROQ and RUclips!

Remember hearing this in 1984 in a friend's flat in what was then West Berlin (Kreuzberg) at five in the morning after a long hard night's drinking at a mad pub called Riziko where Blixa Bargeld was serving behind the bar...I digress. I loved it but thought the singing on the chorus was awful and should have been redone. Truly wonderful to hear this again, many thanks, but the Stephen Hague version sensibly stripped away all the gimmicks and turned it into the beautiful slice of melancholy we all know and love.

I recorded this off a local radio station (County Sound from Guildford, UK) at the time and was quite disappointed with the re-mix (Jan 1985) that made it in to the UK top 40 as it didn't have all those cue points of breaking glass and percussion noises etc. that made this so disitinctive. Great to hear again, a nice peice of nostalgia.

I mean, all those noises ("A-wah-wah! A-wah-wah! A-wah-wah! Uh! Uh! Uh!") are what make it so obviously a Bobby O production, and that extraneous nonsense is the difference between charting at number 121 and charting at number 1. Only the Gregorian choir is salvageable from all the noise.
The Flirts went through about 40 iterations through 40 singles, none of them did anything in the charts, the dead hand of Bobby O again.

His vocals are not as good on this version. It's always strained but it has not been fiddled with enough here, particularly in the chorus. I'm sure it was a rushed session anyway, as Neil was on assignment for Smash Hits in New York, and took the opportunity to squeeze the Bobby Orlando session in. 'The Finland Station' is STILL such a naff lyric. Am I right that some of this version ended up on the 1985 extended 12inch mix?

It sure sounds like it... I've never owned the 1985 EMI 12", but I recall from the Disco EP that it was very similar to this one. Been ages though, so I need to track that down again!

This is an interesting, but very overproduced, early mix of the song, but under no circumstances is it better than the later version. Thank god they re-recorded it with Stephen Hague.

This sounds more authentically 80s than the famous version, but the famous version is more ethereal and atmospheric.

@user yeah everything but overproduced. the extreme rawness is part of its appeal.

Nothing sounds overproduced about this...compared to the revamped version the entire globe is used to, this version is very bare bones in comparison with minimal synths and basic drum machine effects...the 1986 #1 smash has all the familiar mid 80s effects from the use of Fairlight CMI, Emulator, DX7 keyboards and DSX drum machines...safe to say, BOTH versions are brilliant on their own merits...👍🏿😎

      If anything it's underproduced.

So many things about this recording are fascinating to me - including what you brought up. When you compare to the version that came out a year (or less) later, it's really incredible how different they are.

Lots of chin-strokers pretending that this is the best version as its more obscure, but it simply isn't. Easy to see why it stalled.

I think Neil would agree with you. Check out the article up on the BBC News site today titled "How a 'priceless' Pet Shop Boys letter ended up in an Altrincham record shop" :)

Not chin stroking, I actually enjoyed this version. But I understand why the released version sounds like the way it does
