  • PLEASE READ: In this video, green/black are trash, red is recycling, and yellow is yard waste. This was an off-week for recycling. Unfortunately, in this neighborhood, some people place recycling out, knowing it will go to the landfill, because their totes are full and they can't wait another week. Also unfortunately, we do not currently have a driver to do yard waste for this neighborhood. As such, everything was mixed on this run, which makes me sad. I actually did start the run by leaving the recycling on people's driveways, but we started getting calls / complaints before I was done.
    Other than that, I hope you really enjoy this video, and thanks for your support.

    As of today, we were able to figure out how to go through and get YW separately. It also looks like the other driver left recycling totes, so we'll see what customers say about that. Personally happy about that :)p

      @@Commissar0617 Yeah, i was surprised that it is not. I live in san Francisco, and it is every week, and most people have a tiny trash tote and a larger recycling one. Nearly all waste is recyclable--we can even put plastic bags in with the recycling.

      Where I live we have 3 separate trucks. Trash weekly, recycle every other week, compost weekly during the season. Compost is typically done by a rear loader as there's often extra bags so it makes it easier. Recycle can of any size up to the biggest (95 gallon) is included with trash pickup regardless of trash container size. I recycle anything I can and often have to pack down the recycles. It's imperative to flatten and crush things before putting them in the container. Helps a lot. The hauler does say they'll take all recycles outside the can at no extra charge. If I have a ton of cardboard, I'll just make a box of boxes.

    Where I live, recycling is done every week by a hauler contracted by the town. For trash, it's an open market with 3 or 4 haulers in the area. There is no separate yard waste collection, so it either goes to the landfill with the trash, or there's a drop off location for yard waste that the town runs.

    Great video! Unfortunately, some people are just wasteful and don't care. I'm a garbage picker because there's no reason for some nice things people put out to go to the landfill. I stop at this house because they had a wicker couch and 2 chairs out. They had a recycle can out, however I saw corn on the cob in it along with Styrofoam plates and I don't think they belong in there. A lady came outside and said to me, "well, since you like my garbage so much here's a few more bags for you". I mentioned that they probably wouldn't pick up the recycle can because it had food in it and was told that they don't recycle so it's a garbage can. Then I was told if I want to recycle so bad then go ahead and empty her garbage cans and recycle it once I take her garbage away

    In Australia, it seems like it is the same as elsewhere, the recycling companies can only get a certain percentage of the recyclables actually collected and recycled, the rest just goes to landfill or, if it's easily baled, will just pile up in the yard as bales they're never going to get recycled. Recycling would be good if the process was efficient enough to handle the volume of garbage but sadly it isn't and a lot of stuff just goes to landfill. Some places will run a metal magnet over it to scrape out any metals that can be pulled out by electromagnetic attraction, but a lot of it will get missed or end up in landfill anyway if it has too much rust or corrosion on it.

      China isn't taking most recycled materials any more anyway, so most of it is going to the landfill these days even if it's picked up separately, so really no big difference.

    • @philt2
      @philt2 4 года назад

      @@gorak9000 I mean, sort of... China put stricter requirements on the level of acceptable contamination of recyclable materials, which are difficult to meet with co-mingled recycling (source-separated would be a better way to go, but this puts the onus on the household to separate properly). IMO there should be no reason why a country like the US shouldn't be able to recycle a majority of its waste domestically, rather than relying on China, and then giving up when it gets too difficult.

    • @gorak9000
      @gorak9000 4 года назад +1

      @@philt2 If there was money to be made doing it in the US, there'd be 30 companies fighting with each other to do it. Seeing as no one is stepping up, there's probably no money to be made doing it (or at least not at the profit margin US companies, or shareholders deem worthwhile). Sometimes the "free market" doesn't work out the way you'd wish it would. I could see plastics recycling becoming more important if people were using less oil in general. I'm not sure about all plastics, but I know for instance polyethylene comes from ethylene which is a byproduct of natural gas extraction. As long as lots of natural gas is being extracted and there's no shortage of the byproduct ethylene, and thus pretty cheap, it'll probably always be cheaper to make new plastic than bother recycling the old plastic. One thing that's painful to watch go to the landfill is paper/cardboard though, as it's relatively easy (and cheap) to recycle that, and it would save more trees from being cut down. Single stream and laziness is really what kills recycling!

    Does the landfill sort the garbage at all? I know that at some of our garbage handling facilities here in Australia they will run a metal magnet through it to get any metal it can pull out for them. Not sure how effective that is though. Also if you leave a bin out for collecting in Australia and it is their off week it will usually just sit there until the collection week and be ignored completely. In short, trash trucks are only required to pick up designated waste bins, and not recycle bins, unless they have received some formal complaint that the bin contains garbage and not recyclables.

Gotta get the route done somehow! I posted a comment on the Cummins ISM video, don't know if you've seen it yet. I'd really appreciate it if you reply back to me. You know how much I love the Cummins ISM roars, right? The ISM is one of my all-time favorite engines!

    Even if people did set out their recycling wanting us to pick it up as "trash" we can't, the same with yard waste. They all must be recycled, if we see the wrong Material in a Cart we will leave it and tag it with a note as to why it's not being picked up. But some people know that the automated truck drivers don't have a chance to see what's in the Cart until it is dumped into the hopper of the truck. If we can, we will stop and get it out of the hopper and leave it back in their cart with a notice to remove it!

    nice to have a new truck. except you don't want to be the first to scratch/dent it... sorry to fans of these packers but c'mon its 2020 surely they can come up with something that doesn't rely on gravity / bumps in the road /not sticking to the follower plate . to get stuff into the back. ! shame about the co mingling. but until around 15 years ago. all refuse collection was like this. and shock horror!! even today . if the price of for example cardboard drops to where no-one wants to handle it. or charges to take it off you.it becomes cheaper to landfill it or burn it. Guess what ? its landfilled or incinerated. don't ever think companies WANT to be green. its all to do with economics .

      @@Mitch-Hendren Yes, agreed, think he mentioned they didn't use that one for garbage all the time. Regardless, a good truck for trash!!! Hey question, on an empty truck, is the sled left in position after it pushes all the trash out and stays there until the trash is compacted, and then the sled is moved back until "the wall" is created flattening out the garbage at that point?

    • @Mitch-Hendren
      @Mitch-Hendren 4 года назад

      @@mikeyfromnj it used to just sit there waiting for the new trash to pack against it in a rear loader, it also directed the compacted waste up to the roof. some like a faun variopac you cab adjust the pressure. right down to zero. for example recycling you didnt want crushed just scooped.. geesink/vulture. the sled was part of the pack cycle somethjng to crush against. but the downside was as you started a route. t after about a tonne. the weight distribution caused the back end to swing out on turns , ot when travelling.. so newer lorries now have retractable push out plates (sled) if auto eject. they retun to the cab end, if not. youre advised to retract them yourself. the stuff does move around more. but as its spread out. it doesnt cause swing out at speed or on snow/ ice. hope this helps. im in the uk. but i think All europe is the same now
