Agadmator said "find the only move" more than any other game i've seen in a long long time. Every position there was an "only" move to get the winning position. No wonder it belongs in a textbook.
I saw the czech commentary of the tournament and commentator mentioned "Hopefully David will not fall into a trap by capturing on f7..." and as he said that, David did actually capture there. Quite nice of the commentator to see it.
as a fan of the channel since 2018, i've missed many of agadmator's excellent pause the video moments and often ended up enjoying the show. But this one, this one I can proudly say, in the comfort of my own home with a healthy amount of minutes to soak up the position, that I was able to find the correct intercepting move at 12:37! all of white's pieces are pointed at the black king, but in other variations i could not involve that rook on the 6th rank. combined with the undefended d8 rook being the only guard against a back-rank mate, i thought it would be good to try to distract / overload it having to also defend the d4 bishop 😋
I thought Rd6 was obvious, too- first move I looked at and no reply by black was any good. The much harder moves to find were the ones the GMs missed earlier in the game.
What are you: rated 3100? I have a bulletrating on lichess of 2250, have watched Agad for years and almost every pause the video-moment was at least interesting or even mouth-dropping. This is a pretty bold statement, sir.
After your post Twitter i sat for a solid 15 mins and couldn't figure out anything tried all sorts of sacks then i plugged this into the engine the move is truly spectacular.
Nodirbek is better at grinding out endgames, but it's a testament to his skill that he doesn't shy away from tactical melees like this one, and Navara just made the last mistake, which Nodirbek punished severely. Of all the juniors, I see him and Alireza as future WC competitors.
I missed and went wrong with a lot of your pause moments and I love those moments. But this one for all your warning, I did manage the calculate this Rook to D6 move. Felt happy finding it😊
Hi sir, I found the move। Rook to d6 at 12:46. My highest rating was 1640 just in this month. I watch all your videos. You have honestly made me enjoy chess so much that it's a daily routine now to analyze games all day. Thanks a lot and kudos to you god sir.
I also found Rd6! First I thought that it's probably not the right move, that there is something more forcing, but since the alternatives to capturing are also terrible...
2nd: What's it like in a parallel universe where 9LX is standard chess, and Garry really is Garry chess? 1 - People are praising Wesley So, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Bobby Fischer & Anatoly Karpov. Agadmator & Levy are talking about Wesley & Nepo all day long. 2 - Garry really is Garry chess here. Switch Bobby & Garry dates of birth. (Bobby's last name here is probably Nemenyi.) Meanwhile Garry Kasparov invented something strange called 'chess1' aka 'Kasparov Deterministic' where you have only 1 SP. Garry quits the 1975 classical WCC Vs Anatoly Karpov, is arrested in Russia (instead of Japan), immigrates to Iceland and dies in 2008. 1975 is not a big loss. In fact, it's better because Bobby Fischer takes over. 1978 is Bobby vs Anatoly match of the century in Baguio, the Philippines! Idk what happens in 1981, but then 1984 Eugene Torre wins the candidates and faces Anatoly/Bobby! In 1976, I guess Eugene still beats Anatoly. Either Anatoly or Bobby. (Trivia: In our world, Eugene almost beat Bobby in 1992.) 3 - Bobby is still alive in 2024. Bobby, Anatoly, Sergey Karjakin, Wesley, Nepo are on Lex Fridman's podcast while Magnus, Garry & Hikaru aren't. 4 - In the 2019 inaugural world Kasparov Deterministic chess championship (WKDCC), Magnus beats Wesley in 3 classical chess1 games in a row in but no one cares. Fabi is still the top 4 in the 2019 world chess1 championship but the top3 is now Liren. Nepo has never played a chess1 game, just as in our world Liren has never played a recorded 9LX game before 2024Feb. 5 - Wesley/Nepo doesn't quit the 2023 classical WCC. Nepo/Wesley wins 2022 candidates and no one cares about Liren. Wesley So Vs Ian Nepomniachtchi is the biggest rivalry in chess, far exceeding as well as succeeding the next biggest rivalry Bobby Fischer vs Anatoly Karpov, like Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad. Wesley, & Nepo are both considered GOATs along with Bobby & Anatoly. There's no distinction between GOAT & MTOAT. There's a slight bias towards Wesley because Wesley is Bobby's nephew. 6 - Chess' popularity in the Philippines & Norway are inverted. 6a In our world, Bobby had radio interviews in the Philippines. In this world, Garry has radio interviews in Norway. 6b Then Prospero Pichay Jr is imprisoned and the Philippine chess federation is free from corruption. But Wesley is still American. Huhuhu. Oh, in this reality, Magnus' parents are evil and then Magnus gets adopted by religious parents who are friends of Garry, so it's like Magnus is Garry's nephew. The 2019 WKDCC is still like a pseudo - Bobby vs Garry, and it's billed as battle of thei nephews. 7 - But still no one actually really cares about chess1 because no one wants to have a headache over studying the same boring SP again and again. Also its top players Magnus & Garry are still cheaters. But well ok maybe in rapid & blitz chess1 is picking up. (Same as our world. Fiiiine Magnus is right about keeping regular chess for rapid & blitz.) So there's still a 2022 rapid world chess1 championship, half a century after the 1972 REGULAR match of the century. This time Hans Niemann wins beating Hikaru Nakamura on tiebreaks. This time Hikaru accuses Hans, but Hans still sues both Hikaru & Magnus. Ches***m is not sued and is just as good as lichess. Hans is still considered the next Bobby Fischer / Anatoly Karpov while Wesley & Nepo are still considered the current Bobby / Anatoly. 8 - In 2024Feb, FIDE still cancel their 2024 WKDCC, but Wesley & Nepo host a rapid chess1 championship but don't invite Magnus & Liren. Hans isn't a cheater but has still has beef with St Louis Chess Club and so doesn't play that due to scheduling conflicts, but Magnus & Hans are still going to eventually defend the, resp, classical & rapid world chess1 championships. 9 - In general, chess doesn't have that many cheaters, cheating incidents, baseless accusations, etc and has very little corruption, discrimination, treason, politics, etc. FIDE is hailed as 1 of the cleanest sports/gaming organisations. Chess is an olympic sport. Bobby/Anatoly are FIDE officials. 10 - Tiebreaks are settled by armageddon w/ auction rather than lower time controls, so Sergey & Fabi still lose to Wesley/Nepo in resp 2016 & 2018. But no one calls for change of tiebreaks to rapid time controls. Lol. Also, pre-arranged draws are so rare. 11 - Sergey isn't banned because Sergey only privately supports Putin because chess doesn't make people go insane unless they the players want to stick to 1 SP only, like Garry. 12 - Actually here, Bobby has very neutral feminist enlightened political views and is a true patriotic Jew & American ( in politics in addition to still being such a patriot in chess ) while respectfully criticising both US & Israel along side condemning Osama bin Laden / Al-Qaeda & Ismail Haniyeh / Hamas. So Bobby is still against Iraq invasion. 13 - Most importantly, no one cares about Garry, Magnus, Hikaru or Liren. Specifically, in this world, they care less about them as compared to Wesley, Nepo, Bobby & Anatoly in our world. 14 - Paradise. --- Ok back to reality: --- PLEASE agad it's been 4 months! 2023 USCC - Atousa almost beat Carissa Yip, the eventual winner! I actually found rook C6 but it was too troublesome to calculate all possible answers to it. Then I abandoned the RC6 idea in favour of just moving the queen to E8. I had the odd feeling that a mate-in-2 could not be the solution because it would be too obvious but I started the video anyway because the alternative would have been going back calculating the C6 move ... so, yeah. I found it but didn't go for it. ( and in case you are wondering: the defence for QE8 is roook F8)
First pause the video moment, I saw the idea of Qxb4 after Nxf7 Rxf7 but didn't realize Ng5 had to be played first before Qxb4. That's a difficult detail to recognize, and I had to go look at it with an engine to understand why. It's not just to add another attacker to the rook on f7. It's to stop Be6. If Nxf7 Rxf7 Qxb4 immediately, black can play Be6 (accepting the queen with axb4 is losing for black regardless) and all white has only a small edge. Crazy.
An interesting detail but in case someone is wondering: At 5:26 Qd7 attacks both bishops and you will win one of them back since if Re7, Qc5 attacks the rook and threatens Qc1 Re1, Qxe1# So if the rook goes back to protect back rank, you take the dark square bish on c7. However, Qd7 would be a mistake, since intermezzo Bg6 cuts off the king and prepares Re8#, the queen is now protecting the e8 square but if it captures dark square bish on c7, Re8 will be mate. so queen goes back to prevent Re8, but then the dark square bishop can be saved
I really found the move :) yesterday I saw it on your tweet and replied it as aptalkarga. Today I checked the video wondering if I could find the right move. I am soo happy :)
Rd6 is the only move I did find in this video, funnily enough. I saw how the rook and knight were off limits, and saw that it won the bishop, though the last thing that confused me was actually what to do with the knight. Took me a while to remember that Nxf7 came with check...
Found it! I was calculating the obvious Qe8 but after Rf8 just could not find anything. I looked at Qh5 but the rook on f7 can just move and so on. That made me consider deflecting moves. Rb6, Rf6, Rc7 then Rd6 just hit me. Calculations for that move are easy, but finding the canditate moves is hard. Even way harder while playing.
I found it in less than a minute. It is easy when you realise that queen to e8 would be checkmate if black didnt have rook back to f8. Također Antonio imam nešto što bi te moglo zanimati. Moj tata je bio Fischerov jako blizak prijatelj. Javi se ako želiš neki intervju.
Rook d6 seemed to be the only move that made sense. I didn't see all the variations, but after noticing that queen e8 didn't work, it seemed to put immense pressure on black. Ididn't think it was the right move though, as I assumed I had missed something
I found Rd6, I think because on the previous move I was already looking at some Qe8 ideas. I've always loved sacrificing for back rank mate, I won one of my first online games in a similar way.
Nodirbek is the only youngster who doesn’t afraid to lose. That’s a trait of a great player. Of course, he needs to be more careful in some of his games, but in general I can easily see him grabbing this world champion title one day. Great job! 👍👏
Giuoco Piano: Evans Gambit was my favourite opening back in my chess days so it was an absolute blast seeing it in this game! As always, thanks for the vid!
A 12 player double round robin sounds like a dream come true for the candidates, like there are specifically just 4 more players I want to see in there.
This find a move was pretty easy to find. Seeing the knight blocking the kings exit + backrank issues, it only took me a few seconds. The most difficult ones are the subtle moves that prepare some obscure line with so many tactical variations 😅
Comments always gives the credit for the players but the real credit here should go to Agad. This is a top 10 video on this channel. Amazing game with magnificent variations.
I found Rd6 soon after I noticed the knight covering the world h7 square, "back rank mate" was ringing in my head, from there the forcing variations were not too hard to see. Admittedly I didn't calculate after Nxf7+ I just assumed white was winning
i've found Rd6 in a couple minutes. i saw that the rook battery has a backrank motif and that Qd8+ was definitely a free move, since Rf7 has to be played to defend checkmate. And Rd6 looked not only fish-like, it looked like a whale a moment later (since it attacks the backrank and the undefended bishop). How would black even defend? Rdf8? Well that's at least down the exchange after the trades.
I found the move! I noticed that the Ng5 covers h7, so if I were to move my rook to d6, if Rxd6 then Qxe8..leading to checkmate, if Bd7 interposes then Nxf7, if Rf8 then simply Rxd8Rxd8 Qe8+Rxe8 Re8#, if Qc8 then Rxd8Qxd8 Nf7 wins the queen! Now I don't think I found every variation here, I probably missed quite a few, but boy wasn't that move beautiful! Also #suggestion Lasker saga! It's been ages since the last one, we need another saga!
i found that move !!!.....I considered others, but realized the back rank doubled queen/rook was the method for eventual checkmate (with knight guarding h7)
It's always much easier when you know there's move. I found it pretty quickly but would've never found it in a real game. And also, imo the trickiest moves are the quiet ones rather than a direct tactical shot like Rd6. But it does indeed look spectacular
At the last pause the video moment, I didn't find the move that no-one will find. I would have gone Qe2-e8 thinking of a back rank mate and been met with ...Rf7-f8 following which I would have resigned and left the board as quickly as I could.
Because I saw the knight covering that square, The first thing it came to my mind it to back rank check mate with the queen. I saw this but for some reason took me so much time to find the move with the rook. But if you wouldn 't tell to stop and find the move, I would never find it while playing.
I was so so happy in 12:35 after finding Rd6. I worked it out for some 5-6 minutes and calculate back rank weakness as the knight is covering h7 and it just feels so fantastic!!!
I actually got it! And I'm not even very good at chess... another fun line you didn't mention is Rd6 Qb8 (defending rook with queen) Rxd8 Qxd8 and then Rxf7 with a royal fork!
12:40 honestelly I considered Qe8 which doesn't work because of R back to f8... So like many people I don't have the reflex to ask myself: "Is there a move that could prepare the Qe8?"
Yeah that last rook move defines positional chess lol. I'm use to seeing those kinds of moves in four player chess. Those kinds of moves are not discussed enough. But I didn't find it, only the follow up queen sac, but I noticed that the other rook would fall back, black would decline the queen sac in that way. Interesting stuff, is he from Norway? The way people from Norway play chess is incredible. Very impressive ideas they normally use. This is why Magnus feels strength in the end game. His small positional ideas, and tactics he feels is stronger, and holds less theory.
What about Queen E8 at pause the video moment. Black Rook is forced to take the queen after that white rook can deliver checkmate by capturing back rook on e8
12:30 I did find it... my rating is only 1000 because I have to find moves of this caliber atleast 90% of the time to be a GM. There's no one like you who points out and alerts you that you are winning if you find the right move. Most positions would look equal otherwise and we wouldn't think much of it. Edit: *timestamp
Heaven holds a sense of wonder... and your breakdowns allows novice 1850 men like me.. to one day believe we`ll break the magic 2000....Luv from the UK
12:10 I spent over 25 min. to attempt to find that right move but I could not find it. For finding that correct move only required very simple logic, problem and solution thinking method, what obviously I dont have.
actually Rd6 isn`t that hard to find (i found it myself) because it`s really the only move that can put pressure on blacks back rank which is their greatest weakness in the position
I found it without pausing the video, dunnot why but it seems totally obvious to play the rook here. Worth to mention that i fail some pause the video moments even by pausing and thinking for a looooong time (also i'm definitly not at grandmaster level). Maybe having the cat on my lap enlight me with some superior vision ? xD
Remember that last rook tactic. When you have one piece hanging, the first instinct is to unhang it. However, you can hang another piece which actually creates TWO threats for the opponent, and they only have ONE move to deal with it. Its the principle of two weaknesses. Whichever piece they capture you then continue on with the other piece and create further mayhem.
Cant believe I found that rook move! Might only be the 3rd or 4th time ive actually paused the video too hahaha I didnt fully calculate if it was actually going to win, but my gut was right i guess :)
I've said this before but that picture of David Navara always reminds me of the boss from The Incredibles.
navara, here as a poker face unlike that boss who had a roughly diamond nose, hahahah
thanks, now i cant unsee it

He certainly could be though I think some of the other youngsters like Prag have even more potential

#suggestion Lasker saga!
Managed to find Rd6! :D I’m so proud of myself even though you gave us a ton of clues ahah
I recall a few weeks ago Agad avoided the strongest continuation in his game he showed us :(
found rd6! trying to make qe8 work made the move spring to my mind, then all the lines just fell into place very nicely. crazy game!
At the last pause the video moment, I didn't find the move that no-one will find. I would have gone Qe2-e8 thinking of a back rank mate and been met with ...Rf7-f8 following which I would have resigned and left the board as quickly as I could.
I refused to watch the video until I solved the thumbnail 😂 but did eventually find Rd6. Nice puzzle
Covering this game is a great accomplishment in itself.
"And it was in this position on move 28 that the game was stopped, as it was too exciting"
-Agafinegoldmator
Because I saw the knight covering that square, The first thing it came to my mind it to back rank check mate with the queen. I saw this but for some reason took me so much time to find the move with the rook. But if you wouldn 't tell to stop and find the move, I would never find it while playing.
Rd6 is a move Judit Polgar would find! She has found similar against Kasparov :)
I remember seeing him in Wijk aan Zee playing against Anish. Just a stunning appearance.
I found it but to be honest if you didn't said there was a move to find I would have never envisaged it !
Me too
Very good pick to show Agadmator!
A breath of fuckin fresh air!
A little inspiration like this game can go along way.
I found it @agadmator, but after regularly following you and your channel..
I found Rd6 after quite a bit of thinking, but I don't think I would've found that in a live game where I wasn't told that there's a tactic there
12:14 ...Queen sacrifice is also possible to have checkmate by giving check through queen by white piece.....Is I'm correct.... please tell....
Nodirbek's attacking Intuition is so potent that he himself doesn't believe it
This is very true. Probably why he is so strong in rapid/blitz because he doesn't have time to second guess himself!
I was so so happy in 12:35 after finding Rd6. I worked it out for some 5-6 minutes and calculate back rank weakness as the knight is covering h7 and it just feels so fantastic!!!
same and generally i don't find the move after pause moment😅
I found rd6 without pausing video coz it was only move I saw
I actually got it! And I'm not even very good at chess... another fun line you didn't mention is Rd6 Qb8 (defending rook with queen) Rxd8 Qxd8 and then Rxf7 with a royal fork!
12:40 honestelly I considered Qe8 which doesn't work because of R back to f8... So like many people I don't have the reflex to ask myself: "Is there a move that could prepare the Qe8?"
Sir plz tell in the pause the video moment why qd8 isn't working it's just a checkmate there
In the Nxf7 line, what if black plays Raf8 instead of Nh8 to defend. That would remove white's Qxb4 tactic.
12:31 telling the truth agad...I actually found the move with a deep calculation of 7 mins..😅
You need to show a game where David Navara wins! It’s about time!
I saw the move 😅 but I wasn’t able to calculate all the variations
What about Queen E8 at pause the video moment. Black Rook is forced to take the queen after that white rook can deliver checkmate by capturing back rook on e8
12:30 I did find it... my rating is only 1000 because I have to find moves of this caliber atleast 90% of the time to be a GM. There's no one like you who points out and alerts you that you are winning if you find the right move. Most positions would look equal otherwise and we wouldn't think much of it.
Edit: *timestamp
Nodirbek Abdusattorov is a really good player and I really like his style of play.
I found Rd6 because I saw that back rank issues only. I didn't see checkmates in other lines, but good enough, I guess :)
at 12:30 Why is rook to d6 better then queen to e8? isn't this more forcing checkmate?
12:20 did everyone miss the checkmate with queen sacrifice or am I missing something?
Where is medo
Downstairs. He's too old to make it up the stairs now.
Hey Agadmator, I found Rd6. Please give me a heart, I almost never find the pause the video moments :')
At the last "pause the video" moment, wouldn't Q-e8 check end in mate?
After thinking for 51 minutes I found the move and the winning combination.
It was super hard to find and I had a hard struggle to find it.
Heaven holds a sense of wonder... and your breakdowns allows novice 1850 men like me.. to one day believe we`ll break the magic 2000....Luv from the UK
Don't worry, you'll probably get there and see that it's not magical at all.
@@theviscount9985there's nothing wrong in fixing targets, aint it?
Oh, of course. I was not trying to discourage them. @@exbricadlo
I saw Rd6 but doesn’t Rd-f8 defend? If Knight takes, Queen takes. Or if Queen comes E8, Hpawn takes Knight?
12:10 I spent over 25 min. to attempt to find that right move but I could not find it. For finding that correct move only required very simple logic, problem and solution thinking method, what obviously I dont have.
I found it. First time i was able to do it. i have been trying for ages. feeling happy
Woohoo! I found Rd6 🙂. I saw black's back-rank issues and realised the rook on d8 needed to be distracted.
Very naive question, I am new to this but why does qe8 not work in pause the video? Is it not checkmate? Qe8, rook takes, rook takes?
12:36 after white rook to d6, how does black playing pawn g7 to g8 affect the game? Anyone?
actually Rd6 isn`t that hard to find (i found it myself) because it`s really the only move that can put pressure on blacks back rank which is their greatest weakness in the position
I found the move!!!! Give me my 2750 ELO :-)
Love your channel, agad!
I haven’t had a game hurt my brain this much in quite a while
Stress test!
1:00 i see what you did there
when will we see an evans gambit :(
"Strong in the force Nodirbek is!" ~ Grandmaster Yoda
Cant believe I found that rook move! Might only be the 3rd or 4th time ive actually paused the video too hahaha I didnt fully calculate if it was actually going to win, but my gut was right i guess :)
I actually thought about Rd6,but wasn‘t That sure.It was my guess since Rc7 and Qe8 doesn‘t work.
That line they didn't see was brilliant. Up there with Alpha Zero putting Stockfish's queen in a cage.
Can you put the country flags to the player names it's always interesting to see where they are from
