I like using 3:1 heat shrink with adhesive lining (aka marine grade). Helps to seal out any moisture and the larger shrink ratio helps if you are shrinking a larger heat shrink onto a smaller heat shrink; it will shrink to 1/3 it's original size

Great video. I thought my looms were good but this video really helped with running off Y connections and the double spade terminals from previous video which I didn't even know existed has made my life so much easier.
I'm just a hobby bike builder but a professional looking loom has really helped me sell or uptrade my bikes.
Many times on the classic bikes it turns out better than factory.
Keep up the videos, great work, great quality, much appreciated.

Hi, Cody. You might remember me from our local DGR. Just a few comments about this video . First ..a tool that is invaluable for working with heat shrink tubing. Invest in a heat gun. It's much better than using a lighter and you won't accidentally scorch the tubing. Second.. for those old, dirty wires you were talking about. get some soldering paste (aka flux). a dab on the joint will help the solder flow and adhere to the old wires. Just don't overdo it. I know you haven't yet addressed crimped on connectors, but always tin the end of a stranded wire before crimping on the connector. Stay safe, all.

Hey man! Thanks for the info! I do own a heat gun but by the time I locate it, grab an extension cord and plug it in. I’d be done with three connections with a lighter. Heat gun is for sure the best option for consistency but I figured if 1/4 of DIY wire hackers learn to use shrink tubing with something as simple as a lighter. The world would be a better place. 😆

11: 10 I'm really surprised to see that you didn't use any rosin. That would likely solve the issue. I always use rosin and find that the solder will flow much better.

Thanks, Cody. I've only done a couple wiring jobs on my CB750. I found it very satisfying, crimping on new bullet connectors, using shrink wrap to make everything look nice, then having it actually work when you're done. What do you think of those light blue plastic splicers that come with Dynatek electronic ignitions? I used mine like the instructions said, but I've heard those connectors aren't that good. I'd like to connect those wires in a different way, but I'm afraid to mess with it at the moment. Is there a different way to do it that you'd recommend? Seems like the technique you showed in this video would work.

When you said heat shrink is heat shrink I cringed a little my Friend. There are many different grades and types. On motorcycles, when I'm wiring, I use an Adhesive-Lined Polyolefin Heat Shrink Tubing by 3M for motorcycle or potentially wet location splicing. There's also tubing that has particular shrink characteristics for doing one into two or one into three splicing where you need that extra shrinkage to happen with a single piece of tubing. For the most part, general splicing, I use the HF stuff, but always on bikes I use the Polyolefin from 3M. Check it out! Cheers Brother! Great tutorial! I hope you're staying safe. Zip~

Thanks for the info zip! I was aware of the 3:1/2:1 ratio shrinkage and the different styles. I suppose I didn’t feel like debating it all. Same with the solder. I’m sure I’ll hear from somebody about solder core styles and material. 😆

Can copper and silver wire solder together ?

  • @mariodesmo
    @mariodesmo 4 года назад

Heat shrink tubing is available in different shrink ratios. The stuff you're using looks like a 2:1 ratio. You can also find ratios like 4:1 which means that it will shrink to 1/4th the size. That works great on multi wire connections like you showed.
Like electrical tape, there is good shrink tubing such as Raychem brand (sold by TE Connectivity) and there is crap, from you-know-where. World of difference in quality and working characteristics. Good Luck!

Funny thing is...the "type" of solder is actually very important. For electrical wire connection soldering - you definitely do not want to use acid core solder wire. Best electrical solder wire with very good conductivity is 60/40 designed for electrical wire soldering connections. And a good "flux" gel will help the solder bond better.

But there are always two wires, no? You only worked with one...what's going on with the other one?
I am a beginner and learned alot. However, when the text came and said something about only using "this tecnique" if you have cut "that" wire to the harness" it all went away. What's "this?" And what's "that wire?" And where do I cut it the harness(oh, what's that again? How and where do I reconnect it TO the harness ? I would have to do that eventually, no?
I have trouble following for a number of reasons perhaps you can address. I am beginner and I hope you understand and can appreciate that in my case beginner means, "what's a harness?" Ok. Way way way beginner.
So, you only work with one wire all the time, but there are always two(maybe three) what about them
You are never working in and around the bike. I suppose I would be working around the bike. It would be really helpful(only second video of many many you have that I have watched) to see you do this stuff in the bike.
Where are all the little plastic connectors that are on every wire on my bike?
Is there a "THIS IS WHAT YOU DO FIRST video...on the bike...what wire do I cut? Where? What abou the black wires? Sorry.

No solder on vehicles unless absolutely necessary. You're asking for trouble down the road. Every solder joint in any environment with vibration will fail, it's just a matter of time.
Solder does nothing that a solid crimp can't do.
