And during their Super Bowl win years, they were actually ranked higher as a passing team than a running team. Bart Starr is criminally underrated.

They absolutely deserve to be number one. Not only did they win the first two Super Bowls but they went to four NFL Championships and won three in an era of excellence. That was a League that featured the Madison Avenue Giants, the last of the great Halas Bears teams, the Browns - still one of the more successful teams in the league, especially when Jim Brown was in the backfield - the Baltimore Colts squads that had a litany of All Pros and, later, Hall of Famers, and the start of the great Landry Cowboys teams toward the end of the decade (the Packers won two close, hard fought games against them in order to go to those first two Super Bowls).

The 1960s Packers EASILY #1. First off, they won MORE Championships in their Decade (5 Total!) than either the 70s Steelers or the 80s 49ers (4 each respectively).
Not to Mention, they WON 3 CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN A ROW! A Feat that has YET To be Duplicated!
Anyone sitting here going "Oh they were great, but that #1" Clearly need to get their heads checked. They also produced one of the Greatest Teams of all time in the 1962 Packers.
They produced 11 Hall of Famers on that squad, which SHOULD be 12, because Jerry Kramer is STILL getting Screwed by the NFL Hall of Fame.
The Trophy is Named after their Head Coach, Vince Lombardi and when you check his Resume of 9-1 in the Post-Season during the 60s, that pretty much says it all.
The 1960s Packers are the GREATEST NFL Dynasty of All Time, period. Their is No Argument.

Even though I completely agree with the '60s Packers being number one, because the most coveted trophy in NFL is rightfully named after the coach who won the first Super Bowl, the '60s Packers are also a great argument against the teams' & players' worth by how many Super Bowls they won since the NFL & football existed long before that game was played, if you extend the discussion into championships a player & team have won, a lot of other great teams & players re-enter the conversation and lots of football legends have been forgotten or undervalued because the NFL & fans use the Super Bowl as it's only measuring stick of greatness.

NFL Championships were played in a tinier league, with fewer and smaller and slower players, over fewer games and no playoffs. Counting them alongside Superbowls is absurd. Furthermore, ANY "dynasty" built before Free-Agency is a joke by comparison and should automatically fall in rank by that token alone.
There's no logically coherent rationale for placing pre-salary-cap/pre-free-agency "dynasties" over the monumentally more difficult and complicated task of establishing and maintaining such performance in the modern era...

Nearly impossible to argue with their #1 and #2. It's almost scary how similar those two teams were in the way they were put together. As a longtime Steelers fan (first year I remember watching football was Noll's first year as head coach), I _want_ to argue Pittsburgh for #1, but I have to admit Lombardi's Packers deserve that spot. They just have more areas where they were a little better than the 70's Steelers, than Pittsburgh has where they were a little better than the 60's Packers.

The big knock I have on the 60's Packers, which isn't their fault, but just the lack of NFL teams by that point in the year as compared to the 70's Steelers. There were only 13-16 teams during the 60s, so it was easier for teams to make the playoffs or dominate during the regular season then. Also, what other dynasty can you name from the 60's besides the Packers while the 70's had Tom Landry's Cowboys, Joe Maddon's Raiders, Don Shula's Dolphins, and the Chuck Noll's Steelers. Thus, I have to give the edge to the Steelers because they had to play against more teams, better competition, and better head coaches than the Packers did in the 60's. Again it's not the Packers' fault, but just the history of the game of football in my eyes.

And to think they barely beat the Vikings in the SB. 2-0 at halftime. 9-6 going into the 4th Q. A very winnable defensive struggle. And of course, a clear Pitt fumble that was recovered by Minn deep in Pitt territory late in the game that was incorrectly ruled no fumble. If frickin Tarkenton played even an average game, that Viking team should have and would have won the 74 season SBowl. And who knows then how that changes the rest of the 70s.

  • @sdgakatbk
    @sdgakatbk 8 лет назад +1

Imo, the word dynasty is way misused with respect to sports. A dynasty for me is about absolute dominance over an extended number of years. I define it in any sport as a minimum of 3 consecutive championships. By that definition, there are only 2 in NFL history. The first was the 1929-1931 Green Bay Packers. The second was the 1965-1967 Packers. Pittsburgh has been the best franchise in the Super Bowl era because they have won the most championships during that time, but dynasty, no. Also, the 1922-1924 Bulldogs don't count at least by NFL rules. This is because the 1922 and 1923 teams were in Canton while the 1924 team was in Cleveland. The NFL decided these were 2 different franchises though I think a lot of the players were the same in Canton and Cleveland. Btw, that's a good trivia question. Which was the first NFL championship team from Cleveland? Not the 1950 Browns, not the 1945 Cleveland Rams, but the 1924 Cleveland Bulldogs.

Not only fewer teams, but fewer players on the rosters. Every team was filled with the toughest guys.

In my opinion, I think that in terms of coaches, Vince obviously takes the cake. I mean they named a trophy after him! But in case of dynasties, I think the Steelers come on top. With the argument of the packers won more trophies, The first thing to note is that the teams in the 70s were more skilled, hit harder, threw faster, than the sixties. You have the Raiders, Rams. People like Jack Youngblood, and the Steelers still dominated. They were and still ARE the best team in history. And you can’t forget how horrendously shitty the Steelers were before. The Steelers made plays many wouldn’t think were possible and hits harder than baseball bats.

The obvious problem with the methodology of this count down is that it's an inarguable fact that ANY pre-salary-cap/pre-free-agency "dynasty" is _necessarily and *automatically*_ compromised by that condition and is therefore _inferior_ to any dynasty established _AFTER_ that change.
I mean, the system was _specifically_ instituted for the entire PURPOSE of preventing _exactly_ these kinds of perennial dynastic successes, and so, an organization being able to achieve the same, consistent level of stellar performance over such a monumentally long period of time with virtually nothing remaining the same other than the coach, the QB and the knowledge that your roster is going to turn over dramatically from season to season means that such an accomplishment *STARTS OUT* at being an order of magnitude more impressive than *any* similar achievement by some pre-FA/cap team that essentially built one amazing team that they then flogged to victories over substantially shorter windows of time.
Willfully ignoring that simple but inarguable axiom is what absolutely _destroys_ any potential integrity that this list may have pretended (or wished) that it might have had...

    • @Tyrunner0097

Lombardi did it with lesser players than the Browns. Bart Starr was not comparable to Otto Graham. Boyd Dowler was not Dante Lavelli. Lombardi insisted on out executing the other team, being so precise with their plays, they could tell the other team what was coming, and still couldn't be stopped. Also, even with Jim Brown, Paul Brown couldn't make the championship game during the Lombardi years.

Packers are the only dynasty in the late sixties and I believe it was in the 30s or 40s in their early years to win three consecutive titles no other team has ever done that the dolphins in the seventies went 71 72 and 73 but they lost in 1971. Montana and the niners got really close but they lost the year for their third in a row to the Giants the year that they beat la in the super bowl. Other than the dolphins and the '70s no team other than the bills but they lost four straight so it really doesn't count has even came close to winning three in a row besides the dolphins in the early seventies. Heck anymore since the 2000s the only repeat team to go back to back is the Patriots and 2003 and 2004 granted yes they won three out of four years but once again if you include the entire history of the NFL which they still acknowledge records pre super bowl era it's not like baseball and you had that stupid dead ball era. They still recognize that there's only one team to have ever won three titles in a row and that is the Green Bay Packers and they've done it twice in their history and they did it with Vince Lombardi also
