I went into record stoe to buy the the infected when released , the assistant said at last , someone buying with some taste, a testament to Matt Johnson , hugely underestimated
It really is! Just now came up on one of my Spotify playlists and my partner was like, "wow.....who's this?" He had never heard of The The or Jools Holland or Squeeze.... Kids, these days!
I've been in studio sessions where the soloist like Jools just blows the roof off and the energy is just magic. For superstitious reasons I've always tried to book rhythm tracks on a full moon. If the band is feeling that energy it is pure gold. I've been in group situations 3x with horrible record deals and the let down is so extreme when you realize you won't be able to share these moments. Phil Spector had something to do with two of those projects... What a scary guy. The only person he would talk to was the singer. Any communication between he and I went through his subordinates.
Walked in record shop to buy The The Infected , the assistant said at last someone with some taste, that was testament to Matt Johnson, hugely underrated
Time and time again, I come back to these albums. Matt was an incredible songwriter/performer. The "Infected" album is still one of the very few that I will still listen to from start to finish without skipping a track, just fecking brilliant
What a track, I love how they just let Jools have the freedom to play however he wanted in the 80's, the Piano is unmatched. Matt is perfection on legs :) ]
I LOVE THIS SONG! Whenever the world gets too much and I reach the point of crisis I put this on VERY VERY LOUD and all is well... Edit: Honestly I have lived a horrible and stressed out life, my family have been no help, I married a person who ended up being awful to me who then started a divorce against me (It turned out it was becasue she was having an affair with a person who was a convicted criminal who was clearly putting my son in danger as he was wanted by a drug gang) the solicitors worked out quickly what was going on and realised that this divorce what something that I really needed. No, I can't go on, too much awfulness in my life, but at least I'm off the anti-depressants now, all I want in life is a bit of happiness and stablility, is that too much too ask.
Matt Johnson , legend , listen-to the Beaten Generation from the Mind Bomb album , echos of this day and age and written a long time ago ,The The , absolute brilliance
I watch this endlessly i love this song and matt johnson one the most talented artists EVER it pains me that his genius is unknown by millions i loved him then and still do now and jools is just amazing totally blows your head off whether its this live version or the soul mining LP one its the most wonderful song ever as is the whole of the soul mining album a work of art and many gems of his work beyond.
The Algorithm suggested this to me 5 years after the upload. Go figure. The piano solo at the end of the studio version is why I bought The (The) CD when it came out. Absolutely brilliant! I don't think they got much radio play in the US back in the day, so I never expected to see a live performance. Thanks for posting!
Long time fan, first time seeing this version! Thanks for posting...I still can't believe that the the weren't more popular. I can't get enough of them and have been listening to them since the 80's....
Niiiice! As more of a rock fan when I was younger, When I first heard this, the piano solo on the studio version just REALLY hit me and pulled me into exploring/appreciating jazz and blues a lot more. Great tune and great piano solo!
This song has been with me for decades. Matt’s first 3 albums (some parts of Dusk are amazing, so maybe 3.5 albums ;) are brilliant. But he hasn’t always been good to the people around him from what I understand. I hope he’s in a happy place today, as his music inspired me and millions more
Beautiful song, love the 7inch version of this song, should have charted a lot higher than it did, as with quite a few of The The songs should have, i think The The appealed to a more grown up audience and not teenyboppers, Matt Johnson's lyrics and music more suited to music lovers who appreciated more meaningful lyrics and something a little different than a lot of pop rubbish than what was in the charts around the the Eighties, get the The The 45rpm singles collection Double CD and discover the delights of The The ❤️
Matt Johnson is truly one of the greatest song writers ever. What a gem

He really is one of my favorites.
Honky Tonk Plonker meets Glenn Gould. Stunning!
He is a God
Simply THE best. Ever.
Jools solo on the album version is staggering
It really is! Just now came up on one of my Spotify playlists and my partner was like, "wow.....who's this?" He had never heard of The The or Jools Holland or Squeeze.... Kids, these days!
It’s long overdue for Squeeze to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame…
It's f ing ace!

Yes it is
Walked in record shop to buy The The Infected , the assistant said at last someone with some taste, that was testament to Matt Johnson, hugely underrated
Great album. I listened to it yesterday.
Great lyricist, dark and fearless
sounds like a proper old skool record shop worker
Soul Mining is a sublime album. Every track is a classic.
I have wanted to marry Matt Johnson for almost 40 years. My husband understands this and accepts it. Freaking love that guy.
My favorite piano solo ever. Hands down. Fun to finally see Jools actually playing it!
With you 100% - lifts my spirits
Time and time again, I come back to these albums. Matt was an incredible songwriter/performer. The "Infected" album is still one of the very few that I will still listen to from start to finish without skipping a track, just fecking brilliant
The smile Matt gives Jools during the piano solo always warms my heart.
It speaks volumes
He is the session pianist on some of the tracks
One might say that it's an uncertain smile ;)
one of the most sensational piano solos ever!!
It should never end!
I thought you were serious for a moment there. 🤣
Hell yes
I took Mind Bomb on cassette with me to Thailand in 1990 for 6 months. I know every word to this day.
What a track, I love how they just let Jools have the freedom to play however he wanted in the 80's, the Piano is unmatched. Matt is perfection on legs :)

MIND BLOWINGLY GOOD SET!
Can we just take a moment to admire the handsomeness of this young Matt Johnson. Brain and looks...*sigh* ☺️
Walked into a record shop who were playing Uncertain Smile. Walked out with the album. Stunning track and a great album.
Me too 1983. Still play it often along with other music of his ❤️
Best piano solo on any song - EVER

The songs original solo was longer. What is amazing he did it in one take in the studio in the early 80s.
BBC had to cut it down unfortunately lol
I followed The The a bit in my youth (80’s) but somehow devastatingly I missed this tune. Now 40 odd years later I can’t get enough of it.
thank god you found it!
The same thing happened to me. Don’t know how I missed it at the time, but quite possibly my favourite The The song now.
Matt Johnsons lyrics n songs with The THE, went well with us enemployed in merseyside in the 1980’s
I took music like this for granted back in the day , not anymore ! ❤it means more to us than ever !
This still stands up today genius
The The! Such an underrated band and an underrated song! Jools the man nailing it!
👍🇦🇺
Love the crystal clear guitar intro, what a superb track! Recording from 30 years ago, still the same superior quality as in 1993!

One of the best piano solos ever and the flute fits perfectly too. Adds to the ethereal nature of it.
Jesus, 30 years ago... I still know all the lyrics to all the songs on the albumn...
One of my favourite TV performances of all time.. electric
I've loved The The ever since Channel 4 played the whole of Infected, with accompanying videos...
Bought album off the back of that viewing, fan ever since
One regret of my youth is turning down a chance to see The The play live in 1985 (because I had a date planned that night). 😦
I was lucky enough to see them in 1989. Still have my Mind Bomb T-shirt from the show. It's rags, but I'm keeping it.
Love this so much! Thanks for posting.
I did not know Jools Holland did the solo on this song. Epic.

How can you possibly make this any better.....
I know we'll have Jools Holland on it ‼️ absolutely fantastic!
❤ this song, so much to like about it.
Jools is a jewell, I was hoping he was going to be with Squeeze last year😊
My fav TT song, but never saw this video until now. Joolz kicked it.
Thank you so much for sharing this gem!
Jools 🤘
Love this band. Great performance.
The The were an integral part of my late teen years ... oh the memories :)
Every album they've released has caused me to laugh and cry at the same time, very melancholy! No one else does this the way they do!
Long time fan, first time seeing this version! Thanks for posting...I still can't believe that the the weren't more popular. I can't get enough of them and have been listening to them since the 80's....
I love everything about this, including the lad on bass, coolest ever.
I ❤ this. On repeat.

Simply incredible all the way around!!
Brilliant. Gorgeous.
brilliant !
Matt Johnson is so underated
Fantastic!
This is two takes edited together... the main part is in C# but the solo is in the original key of B. Notice the capos suddenly disappear for the solo
The best

Le solo de piano de Jools est mythique sur la version album

Maravilhoso
No one is going to give this a thumbs down!
Interesting that Jools Holland plays the piano as though it's a synthesizer. Hadn't noticed that about him before.
Over 30 years ago. Where has the time gone?
Amen brother, amen.
Genius song ...
Jealous of youth becoming more real for me everyday. The song is just so good and true.
Fantastico Matt e il piano è da film
