I've replaced many motor mounts, starting with my Studebaker I had in the '70's. Bad motor mounts also collapse and can make the entire car vibrate. I was amazed how quiet and smooth running the cars were after new mounts. Scotty was right about the old cars. My '26 Ford Model T shook so much that if I was driving in a light rain, the vibration would just shake the rain off of the windshield.
@broomsterm he's better at fixing cars in his driveway (or public parking lot) with his jacks than all the other "pros" with their garages n fancy lifts. he's fixed n forgotten more than most could ever possibly learn n know.......

LOL, one of the neighborhood kids, I think 8th or 9th grader, told me the other day, that he was going to "build his own car using parts, and ( Scotty''s videos}. Got me thinking, with access to a good auto recycle yard,,access to some for real shop tools; , hell he might just be able to do it :). Funny thing, now that I remember back (I'm an OLD guy... Scotty is just a 'kid' in my eyes) I remember a whole bunch of guys in our High school Auto Shop classes that did exactly that, some with more success than others:) Hell if I had known what my old GTO would be worth today, well DAMN!!!! Better use of time than out 'protesting' or majoring in " Which of the 37 Canadian Government's Legally required Sexual Pronouns Best Identifies You"..... Scotty I snapped one bolt on that mount and had no luck taking it out! So my technician buddy came to my rescue. Felt really good after replacing it my self 😊
Time for my motor mount story! I had an old 68 Ford Fairlane 289, and I was driving around the traffic circle downtown Hollywood Fl. The left-hand motor mount let go and because I was turning, the engine torqued up and pinned the throttle rod wide open! I had the presence of mind to reach over and shut the key off, but it was an exciting 3 minutes!
When I did that exact mount on my Matrix I didn't have to unbolt the power steering reservoir and I didn't have to do the 2 nuts by removing the wheel. You just have to use a long socket and reach underneath. I changed all of the mounts at the same time.
I just realized Scotty is very knowledgable in his proffesion and knows many possible things that could be wrong with the car just by typical noise they make, like a car doctor, and also knows so many cars and their usual problems
Well. Mine has 230k miles. That's quite a few miles. I drive it pretty hard too. It's been a good car. I bought it with 50K miles on it. I've put another 180K on it. I'm keeping it for a commuter car. It still runs great.

Last week, I replaced the front motor mount, the torque mount, the radiator and the radiator hoses. They were replaced with OEM parts. They were not ordered from the local manufacturer car sales places. I could see that the motor mount was history and that the torque mount was cracked. I ordered the OEM, discounted, from a manufacturer car sales place in the midwest. The local dealers do not have good reputations. I knew my radiator was 5 years past normal replacement and had concerns even though the radiator fluid had been changed three months ago. As I feared, the radiator was on its last legs. I had already researched replacement radiators and every single one listed on a national car parts chain had not received good reviews and had extremely short warranties. I went with an OEM unit $40 more expensive than the highest price national auto parts store unit. When you don't have all the tools, don't know what other problems you will find, don't have a lift, don't have a second car to use to go get more parts, you just have your trusted mechanic do the work, stay there with a book, watch him, and provide him with a list of repairs requested and all the known replacement parts you can find. I actually "saved" money by replacing the radiator at the same time.
When did USA go for metric? Here in England I started with BSF and Whitworth and a myriad of other fixings. Then it all went American AF.. Bought the complete set of ring spanners, open Enders and sockets. Next thing it’s all gone Metric. Amazing what you can do with a set of stilsons, plumbers wrench, mole grips and a lump hammer.
Have a good friend who recently ooops! Ran over a curb in his car, a Kia I think, one of those boxy looking foreign jobs. Broken one of the motor mount bolts. Took it to his dealer, not a cheap fix but fixed it quickly before there was more damage. Great video, thanks!

My Chevy Venture had oil filled motor mounts from the factory. After the third one leaked in 18 years, i decided to go with solid rubber. Yep, it is not as quiet, and a slight humming noise travels between the mount and can be heard while coasting about 40mph
What's the deal with replacement motormounts? Everything online said the replacements are junk Chinese rubber that disentigrate in a short time... Not a job I want to do twice so I went with polyurethane on my ASTRO... Works good so far..I hope
Everyone should know that when you're replacing motor mounts like that you need to leave the Jack underneath the motor to support the weight till you get the new mounts in.
Hey Scotty Did you use a jack stand when you pulled the wheel off? I didn't see it on the video. Not supposed to trust a hydraulic jack when you're working with a wheel off.

Scotty, what does it mean if you hear a clunking sound when you shift from Park to reverse or park to drive? Is that a sign the motor mounts are wearing out? The engine and transmission sound smooth and brand new for everything else. It's an automatic transmission, a 2000 Jeep Cherokee
It took me half a day to replace the side motor mount on my 09 civic, mainly because I dropped one of the bolts and ended up having to take the front clip off to retrieve it lmao . but yeah when it got colder outside and first startup you'd feel it vibrate the car till it warmed up then would go away. I just had a shop try to give me the hard sell on changing all four of my motor mounts and struts for $1,300. I laughed. They had the four motor mounts priced at $480 for motor mount parts alone, labor is $300. I found all four OEM parts on eBay for $186. I have already changed three, I have to buy a new jack to change the last one.

Of course it's expensive when you take it to the dealer. They charge like double or triple what most mechanics charge. Especially for parts.

Keep the rubber components of the engine mounts from drying out and cracking . By periodically liberally spraying them with 303 Protectant .
That's pretty straight forward. I have a mount under the engine thats shot. Would I approach this the same way?

Would it be a good idea to spray a rubber preservative on the rubber part of the engine mount Scotty??.
It might just attract more sorry dirt and grit, and I don't think they're 100% rubber. I'm not sure what a "rubber preservative" is?

can damaged motor mounts affect transmission performance..or br mistaken for a transmission problem if you aren't experienced?
Every 150 miles or 10 years , sub frame , power steering mounting too or change it when changing the timing for the second time ,..
your A/C lines can bust or leak if you leave bad mounts on too long. Everything around the engine expects it to be in a particular place.

On my 94' A8 the motor mounts are under the engine. To the left and right of the oil pan. And 2 on the transmission's underside

I love Ford motor mounts they are the easiest mounts I have ever done lol. I did all 3 in thirty minutes.

I just had a shop try to give me the hard sell on changing all four of my motor mounts and struts for $1,300. I laughed. They had the four motor mounts priced at $480 for motor mount parts alone, labor is $300. I found all four OEM parts on eBay for $186. I have already changed three, I have to buy a new jack to change the last one.
Saabs had hydraulic motor mounts---they were the best!
Mercedes too, prob a lot of European cars.

I need a new mount in my Lexus but I don't feel confident jacking up my car in a dirt mound of a drive way that is uneven. Doing a tire removal is already dangerous as it is.
Scotty... help.... I have a problem with my Volvo 2011 XC90... It is mine since new... I fall in love with the car and i had to buy new... I know I made a mistake... but the love is not gone yet and I still want to keep it forever... It has only 66.000 kilometers... And when I make a strong curve or hit the break or full acceleration the cabin air fan stops, as soon as the G force stops it comes right back on... Do you have any idea??
My car vibrates a lot at idle. Gets worse when I turn the wheel or turn on AC. My local mechanic says 3 out of the 4 mounts are broken. Fixing them should solve this issue?
