Blanca Peak Trail // Toyota FJ Cruisers / 4Runner / Lexus GX 470

- In this adventure, myself and some friends from the Rubicon Trail adventure tackle Blanca Peak, in southern Colorado. The Blue FJ Cruiser, white 4 Runner and Lexus are all on 37 inch tires while I'm sporting my little 35 inch tires. We camped at Como Lake and risked life and limb on the rocky off camber obstacles found on the Blanca Peak Trail. Enjoy!

HA... true... looks like I should have hooked up a winch and kept climbing. My front was getting light, but the rear would have climbed I *think*... had I not gone over backwards and got my name added to the plaque!

Wow, 37s on an FJ!! I bet that cost about 10k with the Dana 60 and the extension on the front axle as well. I've already got 18k in my FJ. But that number has lots of labor cost in it. Man oh man Ken, the life threatening part of that trail just isn't worth it to me. Guess I'm becoming a wimp in my old age. But I like watching others do it. Steve so cal.

@@Beezy_Builds I spent 8k on suspension. Icon stage 7. You don't need to go that pricey. You can cut that in half. But, ya Toyota builds cost! I also did full skids, rims tires bumpers whinch, sliders, regarding, total chaos front lower control arms bush Wacker fender flares. So, that's why so much.

18k,??..hell i spent/bought, 3.5k on a bronco. fitted d60 rear,d44 h/p front,locker,.all 8 stud, zf 5 sp, 1356 transfer, 4 w disc,all for less than 10k total.. & im in aus,where sht is hard to get..

Good stuff. If you are ever in Central CA and want a tour let me know. We have Miller jeep trail, Gold Mountain Trial, John Bull... etc. all within 2 hrs of each other. Plus we have Sierras in my back yard. Cheers 🍺

That was an understatement but funny as hell! Man, these rigs are set up to play on the deep end of the pool (D60 on 4Runner, most on 37's!) and these guys don't seem to be fazed by the obvious pucker factor (GX nose pointing straight vertical at 17:0 next to cliff drop-off!)! Anyway, that's a bad-ass trail guys - impressive driving skills!

Nice video and a nice group of Yotas. We live in the hills of western NC and between here, TN and N Ga, there are some really nice trails, but never the high hills and big open vistas like the West.

It’s kind of hilarious how quiet the LX 470 is compared to the two V6 vehicles… Just mounting rocks and going over things in a very unassuming way, you can hear every little move of the tire tread.

To fit 37's they've got total chaos long travel in the front and a Dana 60 in the rear. 👍
Impresive that the fj was able to hang in their with the 35s vs 37s.
I am running 33s, and always debating the increased capability for edge cases vs. practical use of my FJ.
You can fit 34s easy if you want. Milestar mt and nitto rt both have a 34 inch tires. It makes a difference. But you must regear to at least 4.56. I'm glad I did it. I went with the milestar mt. 1100.00 bucks for 5 tires. Great price

Thank you for watching! The GX isn't mine and I don't have regular access to it. It's on 37's and is locked front and rear, that's about all I know.

@@lcorr090k6 they are arb air, and no complaints that I know of. I use an arb front locker on my FJ and it's been great.
@@offroadhub.official Amazing. It's crazy how FJ cruisers are more expensive than a used GX460. Lol. I wanted to buy a FJ here in Toronto, Canada. A 2014 Fj is more expensive than a 2014 GX460. Lol. FJ's here are selling more than what they were sold from the factory.

I drove this trail on a Yamaha 350 motorcycle in 1974. I was NOT a very good rider. Going up was bad, coming down much worse, I pretty much wrecked the bike and my shins and legs. The next week I sold the bike, it was in bad shape. I still have the scars. The trail has been much improved, looks pretty easy to me now.
It would be an extremely rough ride on a motorcycle! You don't get as scraped up on four wheels. Thank you for watching!

Thank you! I'm sure it could be done in a power wagon, but it'll be tight in some places for sure! You'll most likely need a spotter.

A GX470 on 37's? Interested to hear what he has done in order to clear those and to keep from breaking axles.
It seems to be the best among the recent Toyota build videos. I am very curious about how a 37-inch tire setup is possible and I want to know how to select axle gear ratio.
Gx470 is based on land cruiser/ first gen tundra/sequioa chassis.. its pretty easy to run 35's and even 37's on this platform with little modifications compared to other platforms.. as far as axles or breakage most toyotas are over built.. here is a link for a sequioa that runs completely stock axles and stock gears that wheels his every weekend on 37's:

Gx470 is a 4runner. The gx is literally a rebadged land cruiser prado
Its not a terrible job, but the same money as a lot of other builds TBF. Mainly you want 8.2 or larger rear axle and long travel front sus. You can fit 37s with a sawsall but your not gonna be able to wheel it very good.
Ken do you have video of you coming over Jaws 2? I'm in an fj and considering this trail. Would love to see the footage for line choice

@@offroadhub.official it is Jaws 2, but none of you. This is (as you know) an extremely consequential obstacle. As I also have an fj and have friends wanting to run this death trap, I watched to see your line choice. I think at the time you made this video our trucks were setup just about the same.

I'm new to wheeling, but it looks like all these guys have lockers, would the stock gx470 with just the center diff lock be able to make it though these trails(obviously with a lift and apropriate tires + supporting mods)? Or is a rear locker needed at a minimum?
I'm sure this trail could be done with open differentials. Having at least a rear locker makes life much easier. With no locker, some winching may be required. Thanks for watching!

Factory differentials yes, I believe so. Definitely regeared though.

They were on 37" tires. 17" wheels I believe.

With all the money they waste on parts and repairs they should build an over view camera system so they wouldnt even need a spotter . just sayin
