After completing Brinstar, a door closes behind you completely preventing you from accessing the first 3rd of the map until you can get the wave beam, which comes a decent ways later. There's also things like tall shafts you fall down among other barriers that temporarily prevent players from backtracking.
Yeah I was about to comment the exact same thing, Dread actually I think doesn't do it as much, you are pretty free to back track, rarely required for main progression, but crucial for sequence breaking.

That part of the sequence break was planned by the developers, the reason why was to extend the way you can obtain diferent upgrades and be more replayable, unlike the mach ball or the glitches with the speedbooster, the wall jump was planned with that intention, that's why when you find the creatures on brinstar you can hear the jingle that plays when you get an upgrade. Sure the developer's planned an especific path but then again why bother with getting getting you to learn wall jumping in a path that you can only get out by using it?

Also the continuous wall jump which is needed to get wave beam early was likely not part of the plan since the animals teach you bouncing back and forth on a wall (which is how every Metroid after uses them). Using shinespark to skip grapple to go to ghostship early was likely a dev intended skip since there's no other reason for the forward shine spark to exist in game.

To me it's absolutely on par with Super Metroid being on the top of 2D Metroid games. It surpasses Zero Mission, Return of Samus/Samus Returns and Fusion BY FAR, absolutely no doubt about that
Don’t get me wrong, the game SHOULD have a button remap feature, but doesn’t the Switch have a system level button remap nowadays? So if any button felt wierdly mapped, it would’ve still technically been remappable.
Can’t wait not only to play it, but also to see what the speedrun community does with it. I still love to see runs on Super and Zero Mission, and hope this is as fun to sequence-break and master as those.

I've finished it i am so happy i got to play it. It has learned A LOT from its previous games and most importantly, they studied indies such as hollow knight and axiom verge so well, so i can safely say this game is infinitely superior to all other entries in the saga, and competes with super metroid for the n° 1
Nintendo needs to make sure Mercury Steam keeps making 2D Metroids in the future .... Amazing game, amazing experience. They even built in on purpose sequence breaks for players O_O Like there is a quick kill on Kraid's second phase if you get the bombs early ... You get shot into his pink hole and just bomb him to death.

It’s not objectively better, films like spider verse intentionally have lower frame rates to replicate a comic book style yet remains smooth because our brains fill in the gaps

The people complaining about spoilers are absolutely ridiculous. You should know that there was gonna be gameplay spoilers in a 16 minute review and half the complaints are about stuff that was already in the trailers. What did you guys expect? What was he supposed to do, show the reveal trailer on loop for 16 minutes?

In Metroid, I kinda look at missile upgrades as Korok seeds in BoTW. You don’t have to get them all but it helps to get a lot of them. Although Metroid incentivizes collecting them all with that completion %.
This review taught me about the melee counter when the robot attacks you. I instinctively pressed X when the robot was about to kill me, so I missed the actual tutorial message.
I noticed that the EMMI have a similar body structure to Chozo's. Don't know why, because they were made by the Federation, which are humans, but it's a cool detail I noticed.
I mean, the only thing separating it from human form is height and it’s ability to crawl around into tight spaces which Adam let’s you know early on. Maybe there will be details to your suspicions in the game somewhere if you were in fact correct on your assumption of the Fed taking inspiration from previous encounters with the Chozo ruins.
Honest to dread is amazing from start to end. One i wish they didn't do was change the controls of the speed booster. It becomes a techincal chore when i can't do super technical shinespark moves because it's tied to holding down the LEFT stick. I feel like mapping pulse and cloak to d-pad and flash shift to a left stick hold would open up A for a run button to go into speed booster.
I am impressed what Mercury Steam did with the Metroid franchise. Metroid Dread has shown us how the Spanish studio has improved since their Castlevania Lords of Shadow Days.

I just finished it. I highly disagree on the OST not being good. There are so many incredible pieces of music. And the sound effects from enemies are unique and interesting
“can it live to the expectations built up over 20 years” well frankly I thought this game got canceled 15 years ago or was an actual joke, so I have no expectations walking into this
It was originaly intended for the ds and even announced in some magazine but the ds could not run the game well so it was canceled. The developers even said that.
I have to ask. Can you use both the analog stick an dpad to move? I would like the control scheme to have it so that I could use the dpad for general movement, then use the left analog stick for free aiming. And using the right analog stick to switch aeon abilities
@@Nuka-Lucas the maker of the video is wrong. Go to system settings > controllers and sensors > button remapping and you can set the controls however you like. It think Metroid Dread might his first time playing on the Switch.

Super metroid also prevent you back tracking until you collect Ice beam.. Many people forget that after you drop to lower brinstar ... You cannot go back..
Its definitely my favorite Metroid game which means it's the best 2d metroidvania game out there imo. Ori would be my second favorite game. Dread just looks and controls beautifully and it's so fun to play and explore. I love it and can't wait to play more everytime I'm away from it. Im going to sad once I beat it fully and its over. Hopefully they'll release some DLC for it.
I just read a write-up/review on Mashable, and I'm kinda worried I won't have fun with it :/ I know everyone's different, but they mentioned a lot of things I get really irritated by in certain games. Maybe I'm just not the target audience. Oh well, at least I'll still be contributing to its sales success. Still want to see the franchise succeed!
This game would have been 10/10 but their main issues are the fact that you have to kill mostly every enemy with a counter otherwise they take a million hits to die. Also the robots get too repetitive.

Why, why, why didn't Nintendo go with a full 2d sprite engine with this game? It could have looked glorious on almost any screen. Have any of you seen Metroid Dread running in docked mode on a screen bigger than 50 inches? It doesn't look right...thankfully, that's my only complaint and as everyone should already know graphics don't make the game. Addendum- You know what we need...a Metroid Maker in the same vane as Mario's builder titles. Then I could hopefully remake this sucker in full 2d. ;)

I think they didn’t include custom controls so that people are encouraged to use the system button remapping as it is so good.

I'm honestly really happy to hear that this game takes a lot from Fusion. Fusion is my favorite Metroid game, followed closely by Zero Mission.
Now that I think about it, even though we had tons of varied scenes, there were no clips of Ferenia.

Technically, you can remap your controls. You just have to do it through the Switch menu.
Does the game have the fantastic Zero Mission system where you can skip most of the "required" power-ups if you know the game well enough?

According to nintendo the game is far more open ala Super Metroid.
So far you can skip 4 upgrades, but you will need to use alternate routes to bypass the "intended" paths.

This game would have been 10/10 but their main issues are the fact that you have to kill mostly every enemy with a counter otherwise they take a million hits to die. Also the robots get too repetitive.

Why, why, why didn't Nintendo go with a full 2d sprite engine with this game? It could have looked glorious on almost any screen. Have any of you seen Metroid Dread running in docked mode on a screen bigger than 50 inches? It doesn't look right...thankfully, that's my only complaint and as everyone should already know graphics don't make the game.
Addendum- You know what we need...a Metroid Maker in the same vane as Mario's builder titles. Then I could hopefully remake this sucker in full 2d. ;)
