    The Baby references go further. OTHER M is a anagram for Mother. Metroid Other M is an acronym for Mom. It's an anagram inside of an acronym.

      Weerd my comment got deleted I thought it's cool to like the title is pregnant

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 3 года назад +20

      This is likely pure coincidence, as the bottle ship for instance is likely more a reference to bottling your emotions as the Japanese version reveals that Samus was injected with all the emotions of the creatures the Super Metroid ate, which is why she is so emotional in the game. This was removed by the translation team along with a bunch of other changes, so they probably mistranslated the context behind the bottle Ship being a baby bottle. Then the title itself likely wasn't supposed to be an anagram (though I suppose it could be intentional but for a different reason), the idea is that who is the Android MB: Madeleine Bergman or Mother Brain, the fact that you encounter Phantoom is proof that it was Mother Brain behind everything, thus it was the other MB name all along.

    • @lazyfatbum
      @lazyfatbum 3 года назад +1

      @@GBDupree cool can you tell me how phantoon shows that mother brain was behind everything? He's a general right? I thought he was like a mutated alien made of what the ghosts are made of on the wrecked ship

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 3 года назад +7

      @@lazyfatbum in the Japanese version of Super Metroid's manual it says that Phantoon is the ghost of the first Mother Brain. The English Manual is pretty accurate otherwise but accidentally is missing this line. It's just one of many translation goofs that have affected the series. But since this game was written in japanese then this point about Phantoon was canon. So the plot point is lost on English players but is intentional.

      By "retro review" I'm sure he didn't mean for it to sound like 80s retro... I'm sure it was just meant in a way to let viewers know, "This is a video game review, but it's not new." The word retro literally means "backward" in Latin, or "the past." It doesn't really denote a specific amount of passed time; that's just the association people make with the word.

      OG Metroids 1 and 2 are dope though, not saying they're flawless but they mostly get a bad rap just because they take longer to learn. It takes a higher degree of basic skill to beat those games, but once it clicks they're great games that give you plenty of freedom to explore on your own (especially Metroid 1). Other M might be flashier but unlike the first two games it totally misses the mark on how Metroid gameplay should feel.

      Both of which are the cause of the terrible translation. Adam never Authorizes more than just the first time in Japan. And the PTSD scene is given further context with a plot twist that is removed in the English translation. As for her being in her Zero Suit the whole scene, that was the fault of the CGI cutscene team forcing it because it was "easier to convey emotion outside a suit". @Nimi450 3 года назад +9

      @@desh206 Indeed, many of Other M actually powerful moments are hidden behind prior knowledge of the lore or careful listening to EVERYTHING that is said.
      The "PTSD" is a good example, but you ahve to have read the Manga to understand it, first the circumstances around Ridley are clear, he is the responsible of K2L's devastation AND fed off the bodies to stay alive after Samus's father destroyed his ship by blowing off it's cargo of fuel, leaving Samus and Ridley the only survivors of it. Then, she got trained, genetically enhanced and weaponized by the chozos to make her the 'Guardian of the Galaxy", only for her to reject most of it and run off into the world to try and grow by herself. Which would lead to a Space Pirate attack of Zebes with Mother Brain turning on the chozos to assume leadership of the Pirates. This turn of event would see Samus return to Zebes against all orders only to be met with Ridley, triggering for the first time the PTSD of her home's destruction, Ridley gleefully playing into it to make the scene even more stressful.
      There a chozo, one of those who rose her sacrifices himself to allow Samus and her friends as well as a few chozos to escape Zebes, leading to Samus entering the military and thus kicking off the events Other M presents in the flashbacks, then this launches into Metroid (the game) proper.
      From there on we saw Samus battle Ridley a few times, and by few snipets and other mediums but just the games, the way how Ridley is fought makes more sense. From that point on everytime she encounters Ridley, Samus goes into what could be descrived as a berzerking rage, assaulting Ridley until he is dead, a reaction which, if you document a bit is part of the steps to accepting the death of someone, Rage and Anger.
      At the beginning of Other M Samus does clearly states it's been a while since the Pirates were wiped out, that peace had propagated throughout the Federation, thus we can estimate she has had the opportunity to move on from that Anger, or at least to forget it, as the Pirates don't exist anymore they don't constantly remind her of K2L. Thus, Ridley's return, even just as a clone could be easily seen as a new Trauma to Samus a stepback not dissimilar to that of an addict falling back into addiction, regressing several steps towards healing. In Samus's cases she falls back almost to square one. Fear, the same primal Fear that Ridley instilled in her as she was only 4 years old resurfaced on full force in her, hence her freezing in place, loosing her focus, denying what she is seeing, that Ridley, whom she had finally thought to be gone for ever, is back, and thus cowering before him.
      Many people underestimate the reach at which she was damaged by that experience, and I think what was so missed in that scene with Ridley, was that aspect. Presenting her past was never done, and that detail, that little window into her psychee explains full well why she suddenly is that little girl again. "He cannot be alive again. I killed him for good." Yet there he is, again.
      Sorry for the long post, but I think this particular scene that polarizes so many people is the best example as to why Other M isn't as bad as people think, it's keys that are missing and so badly given that the impression we have as a player, and what Samus truly is, are disconnected.

    There's an absurd double standard people have for Anthony saving Samus, here the male character, saving Samus is called sexist, but NOT the multiple times Rundas, a male character, saved Samus in Prime 3.
    The other thing is, Fusion already EXPLICITLY stated Adam sacrifices himself to save Samus, again, another male character was stated to have saved Samus in a past game, but is not called sexist.
    I GUARANTEE if Adam was female (or Samus was male) not one SINGLE soul would call the game sexist.
    Ridley was never stated to have been killed, truly killed, in any previous game, that is until Other M. Samus states:
    "And the explosion that followed destroyed planet Zebes, along with the remains of Mother Brain, the Space Pirates, and my long-standing nemesis, Ridley"
    Yes, Ridley is really tough and can come back from near death (hence her calling him a "long-standing" nemesis), but not from TRUE death like in Super.
    She is stating the explosion on Zebes destroyed Ridley entirely.
    You state the Ridley in Other M is a clone, but this is you using hindsight, Samus doesn't know this, the fact it's a clone is what makes it more impactful to her, because the REAL Ridley IS truly dead by this point.
    In short, Samus fought Ridley (the scourge of her PTSD) many times in the past, but FINALLY got rid of him entirely in Super (real Ridley is canonically dead by Super), then in Other M she is tracking and expecting the Mystery Creature, but Ridley pops up instead, because she didn't know he was a clone, this was LITERALLY impossible in her mind, THIS is what triggered her PTSD.
    In real life, PTSD can leave someone, then years later, trigger again.
    You bring up why doesn't Samus use her abilities like Bombs or Varia Suit even when it could be useful, but previous Metroid games have done this too, in Prime 2 Samus starts the game with Power Bombs, but never uses them, even during the scene she's surrounded by the Ing when she first enters Dark Aether, she doesn't use them, even though it would have been the perfect time to have used them. After this the Power Bombs are stolen, and Samus gets them back late into the game, only THEN does she decide to use Power Bombs.
    You say Samus taking orders is a betrayal of her character prior to Other M, but this is a blatant lie, as in Fusion she takes orders from Adam. Also in Fusion she states she dislikes taking orders, and that it's her SECOND time under the orders of a CO (Other M is the first time).

    • @groudonor12
      @groudonor12 3 года назад +2

      Several points of yours don't make sense, to start off Rundass only saves Samus ONCE (plus all the other bounty hunters) and ends up kills himself due to his fear of Dark Samus. Secondly, Adam is DEAD in Metroid Fusion and she only follows Adam's orders because of the X Parasites. Thirdly, Ridley and all the Space Pirate leaders DIED in Metroid 1, since then they were either bio weapons or cloned. It's mentioned in Metroid Prime where they mentioned the vast amount of attempts they did to bio engineer them resulting in multiple failures. Plus, the PTSD moment doesn't make much sense considering she's fought Ridley EIGHT times prior, at least be bothered to show the moment when he captures the baby Metroid. At least that makes sense CANONICALLY, the fact she's forced to follow orders isn't good enough seeing Metroid is primarily built on exploration and level design.

      @@groudonor12 Rundas saves her when she's falling to her death after defeating Meta Ridley, as well as the time she's surrounded by the four Pirate dropships, Rundas destroys them. Same amount as Anthony, once when the Mystery Creature pinned her down, secondly with Ridley.
      I am aware Adam is dead in Fusion, doesn't change the fact Samus followed direct orders from a GF CO in Fusion.
      No, Ridley was not truly dead in Metroid Zero Mission/Metroid 1, this is what the scan log of Meta Ridley states:
      "The reconstruction of geoform 187, code-named Ridley, was recently completed. After his defeat on Zebes, Command ordered a number of metagenetic improvements for him. Though aggressive, we were able to implement these changes in a cycle. The metamorphosis was painful, but quite successful in the end."
      He was alive during this process, as indicated by the term "painful". Ridley was severely wounded in Zero Mission, but not completely destroyed like he was in Super. Even comparing the two defeat animations, in Zero Mission Ridley just sort of fades away, while in Super his body violently tears apart into pieces.
      It doesn't really matter "how many times" Samus has fought Ridley before, it's a matter of her believing him to be truly dead and gone for the first time.

    Metroid other M is one of Nintendo´s most interesting productions for sure because for every step forward it takes it takes two steps back.
    *They wanted the game to be a character study on Samus, the most respected female icon in video games from a game series with a serious sci-fi tone but they decided to co-develop the game with the help of the team who invented jiggle physics and makes games about anime girls playing beach volleyball.
    *They wanted to make Metroid a more cinematic experience but then the script, acting and cinematography were not good.
    *They wanted to make Metroid an action game with a heavier emphasis on combat but then they restricted your control to just the Wiimote.
    All of these ideas would have been amazing and brought so much to the Metroid series as a whole, but they found a way to screw up most of them.

    I loved this game and the lore it added to the series. Contrary to most critics beliefs, Samus' portrayal does make sense and does flesh her out more. Also, this game made Samus feel like a true superpowered badass in a crazy powerful suit, in a 3d space. I think that's something the prime series kinda missed out on. Translating 2d Samus into 3d. I'm not some gaming ninja (at least outside COD lol) but boy did I have a whale of fun with *Other M - easily the best Metroid experience.* The way Samus moves, so slick and agile _just_ like the 2D games really does empower you: that's the whole point.

      While i do think you can optimize your gameplay to be better, just like any other game, and while i do feel Samus is slick and agile, I´m not sure if that´s what makes a Metroid game succeed and, even worse, it pales in comparison to the all time great action games like DMC or Ninja Gaiden.
      While flashy and satisfying at first, it´s a repetitive, overly simple combat system hindered by the obtuse limitation of the controls. If they also used the Nunchunk I´m sure the combat would´ve been elevated. What is there, is fun, but nowhere near as deep as it could've been. You also never get the tense moments we had in the 2D games or Prime.

    when i played it back when it was new, i thought the gameplay was decent (excepting that you needed approval to use your arsenal, which is a contrivance even more bothersome than getting zapped and losing it all, like in the prime series), but it got boring after a few hours.
    what really irked me was the characterization of samus as a sort of unsure, shrinking creature, which would have been fine except that in gameplay she was an agile, decisive killing machine. i also disliked how she was portrayed as hungry for adam's approval as if she were still a cadet, because it didn't jive within the timeframe that the game is supposed to take place in - she had solo'd a planet full of monsters and iced the mother brain multiple times by this point!
    speaking of, the fact that she had PTSD from Ridley in the game, despite blowing him up multiple times in previous games, was very silly, and would not have been except for the game's placement in the timeline.
    if the game had been set much earlier in the timeline, before the other mainline games, her characterization might have made more sense, but then none of the storyline would have. it seemed like samus' character was from one time in her life and the rest of the game was at a different time.

    • @golfer435
      @golfer435 3 года назад +3

      I don't think you understand how PTSD works. Nor do you understand how the human mind works. She can still be all of those things, and yet seek Adam's approval because he is the measuring stick that she compares herself to. For all of her resentment at being treated like a child, and for all of the respect that she does have for Adam, she is still human. He was a father figure to her, even moreso than Old Bird, so a level of seeking approval is to be expected.
      As for the PTSD, there is not controlling it or getting over it. It's going to be there forever. Also, let me put it this way. She just destroyed a planet with his dead body on it, not to mention she lost the baby metroid that saved her life and enabled her to kill Mother Brain, and she has been fairly emotional throughout the entirety of the game especially since she is dealing with her past. It makes sense to me why, when Ridley does show up, she breaks HARD.

    19:25 "The Samus we've known for 24 years at this point would not be so quick and eager to take orders from someone else"
    That right there is my biggest issue when I hear people criticize Other M, I can understand the irritation of having your skills locked behind Adam's permission, I can understand the criticisms towards the voice acting, the over reliance on the baby symbolism, But the idea that Samus in this game "betrays" her character is complete and utter bs for the reason that never even had a personality to betray, up until this point, she has ALWAYS been a silent protagonist like Link, no personality, no characterization (with maybe fusion as an exception). you DON'T know how she was feeling every time she fought Ridley, we never even heard of what her relationship was with any other individual characters. So the idea that this is not " the Samus we know" always kinda irked me cuz we DIDN'T know her.
    Sorry, it's a small pet peeve I have with the criticisms towards this game, I think most of them are warranted but the one about Samus being out of character is the one I heavy disagree with. I'm not saying that the writing is good.
    and about the Ridley scene, aside from what I said about we not knowing what was going through Samus' mind every time she fought himm That's the thing about PTSD: you never know what might Trigger it. sometimes you can believe you're way over a trauma, go on with your life normally, then Boom, you see or hear something that triggers it and everything comes back, specially if you're not expecting it. In the context of Other M, Samus believed she Killed Ridley once and for all, and she was on a mission that had nothing to do with the Space Pirates. she had no reason to expect to see Ridley to show up.

      It warrants playing it at least once, I feel. My main problem with the PTSD scene is the way its shown and how it feels in relation to rest of the plot. It comes out of nowhere, the game never explains it well how Samus feels about him (she just gives him a very quick mention in one of her monologues), so her reaction being this shocking comes out as pretty forced. They also show her transforming into A LITERAL CHILD in front him, before Anthony saves her. It also serves no purpose on the plot, since Samus never kills Ridley herself (he's finished offscreen) and never has any triumphant moment.

      Other M isn't exacly a mainline game. It's a spin off that serves to fill some blanks, same with the Prime games.
      You only need to play it if you want to see how Adam died and how there is a frozen Ridley corpse in the B.S.L in Metroid Fusion.

    Nintendo could easily rerelease Other M and fix the controls, and highlight the interactive elements during the first person sections better, which would fix a lot of the issues of the game. The dialogue would still be bad, but a lot of the gameplay is actually pretty good and with better controls it should be worth playing.
