Key Steps for Breathing from a Free Flow Regulator:
    1. In the event of a regulator malfunction, turn your head to one side to avoid mask dislodging from the rushing air.
    2. Remove the left side of the mouthpiece to allow airflow and facilitate breathing.
    3. Simulate a free-flowing regulator by pressing and holding down the purge button.
    4. Maintain calm and controlled breathing for at least 30 seconds.
    5. Practice this skill regularly to ensure readiness and confidence in emergency situations.

A couple of years ago my regs froze (water temp6°C) and began free flowing. I had to do a rather quick ascent. Luckily I was only in ~10 metres of water. My tank emptied out shortly after hitting the surface. A week later my dive buddy had the same thing happen to him at around 30metres. He sipped from the stream and then shared air from another diver once his tank emptied out. This is a good skill to practise.

What if you lost the mouth piece? (This can happen on certain failure points.)
It should be trained with a removed reg in front of your mouth.

Because you need to be able to help yourself first before you can manage the situation with your octo or your buddies octo.

Is that skill still being taught?
    What problem does it solve?
You can perfectly well breathe from a freeflowing regulator without removing half of the mouthpiece and thus risking inhaling water and adding stress to an already stressfull situation.
For a recreational single-tank diver: 1. signal your buddy/guide/team. Eventually switch to your octopus if not freeflowing too. 2. Begin ascent as a team, respect ascent speed. 3. Monitor SPG and be prepared for OOG (assume your tank will last 1-2 minutes or maybe even less).
Obviously, dont panic, but dont waste your time at depth either.
    Simple, effective, saves your life.
    Safe dives everybody
