I’m Italian and for my experience when we say that we are Italian and not white it’s because there are even black people in Italy, and for us our nationality is more important than our skin color
I’m Italian and from a Mexican neighborhood in LA. One of the times I was getting jumped for walking while white, some mutual friends broke it up and told them “ he’s Italian. He’s a grey area.” I have identified as a grey area ever since.
As a qualified, professional and long time experienced racist, I can confirm they are grey areas. Southern Italians tend to have darker complexions, darker hair and eyes. Northern Italians can very often be blonde, fair skinned and blue eyed etc etc. Sicilians from the south have been mixed by invading groups like the moors or just generally mixed with other peoples like Greeks who tend to be darker skinned and their ethnic history is complex to break down in and of itself. So basically if you’re southern Italian or parents of southern heritage you’re likely genetically mixed and darker. If you’re northern Italian through and through much more likely to have Western European DNA and therefore fairer skinned and much more ‘white looking’. So grey area indeed.

If only people knew how much shit and how vulgar italians talk about EVERYONE else, they would probably be less hesitant to joke around with italians too, sincerely a half blood.
I see endless videos on the web discussing whether this group of people or that group of people are white or not. The common denominator is that they are ALL made by Americans, bar none. Other people are just not one bit as obsessed with the issue as Americans are.
Europe is a place of similar population, landmass, and economy to the United States, but is divided into many tiny countries. So yeah it’s obvious that it’s easy for Europeans to go ‘I’m belgian’ to distinguish yourself or provide background. America has more people the whole of western and central Europe, and they all speak the same language as their first language, and they all speak it with less dialect differences than one can encounter between two neighboring cities in England. So while there are cultural differences across the United States, they are far more subtle. Italian Americans still speak English like the rest of us, but they have an entirely distinct culture because they’ve largely existed in places where they make up a very high concentration. So while they might not have that many similarities to Italia Italians, they are a distinct culture that we cannot ignore. For a lot of other European groups who didn’t settle in high concentration areas like Italians, their culture was largely blended together, and just became ‘European’ or white. Early on, like 1800s this excluded the Irish, Italians, Poles, but as time went on, more and more of their culture was just assimilated into the overall culture. So since the formation of the United States, ‘white’ has really more so meant you come from a European country that assimilated into the generic American culture, and you didn’t claim any specific ancestry to any individual country. Most Americans are European mutts with ancestry to every single European country, so obviously we need broader/different terms to refer to people Edit: also it’s only Europeans who don’t see it this way, Asians/Africans think you are all white.
I'm southern Italian and we are not white. I have Middle Eastern and North African in my mix. I am olive and tanned skinned and most of us Southern Italians are. People actually think I look Mexican. For example someone said 'Oh your father is so spanish for liking knives!' Like what ... Or 'dont you like pets bc of x nationality?' dont you hate this that that.?' Dont get me wrong Idc if someone says it sometimes but where I grew up it literally is the only thing ppl.talk about and its even worse if a specific natiomality is always depicted as bad behaviour. I guess its better than in America, lumping all ppl together bc of some skin colour. Sorry for that rant 😅
@@monito3575 yeah, you're right. That's the nature of stereotypes. I mean up to a certain point, it's safe yo assume that if someone is from x nationality, you can know a few things about them. For instance you can know the kind of political environment they've been exposed to,.you can assume they know the name of their head of state, and it's also safe to assume they have an opinion about those things, so there you have a few topics to talk about. But then there are countless other stereotypes, some of which as you said are bad. For instance I was born in Romania, and we Romanians are always stereotypically said to be thieves. I always take this jokingly, and, to be fair, it has a kernel of truth to it. We all know some such stereotypes. The Americans are "dumb", the french are stuck up, the British stab people, Germans are always angry and speak loudly, Spaniards are sleepy, etc etc etc. I often joke about these things, most often about my own ethnicity. But it's important to note that neither me nor the people I joke with think these stereotypes are true, nor do we use them to cause actual harm to others. Rather we're actually laughing at the people who actually believe these stereotypes, by over exaggerating them and sarcastically pointing out how true they are. Sadly we humans have stereotypes about everything and everyone, not just nationality but cultures, sub cultures, ages, generations, and so on and so forth. If all those stereotypes were true, I'd be a young, weak, effeminate, tech addicted, edgy, cleptomaniac organ trafficker who dreams of impaling Turks and drinking their blood while watching them writhe in pain, I would also not have my gf and I'd hate all women in the world. Or maybe I'd be a sunlight fearing, super strong, cold immune, hyper masculine tech genius and hacker that wants nothing more than to start a new company to change the world for the better. I've no idea why so many stereotypes exist about so many different things, and why they don't disappear. I've no idea what use they have in our society if any, but I actively try to remove them from my thoughts as much as possible and not let them bias my worldviews, and the same thing can be said about many people I know. I don't really know what can be done about the people who believe stereotypes are true, but we can try and contribute a little towards removing them or making people understand they're not real.
White and black, despite obviously deriving from colors, aren't about skin color, they're just the terms we use in America for caucasoids and negroids.
It really means nothing inside of America either. White people calling their selfs white, same goes for black people calling their selfs black, etc. People that do this allow for their cultural heritage to be erased.
Italians consider themselves "Italian" just as any other European considers themselves as their nationality first because we don't have to make our whole culture just our skin color, everyone's white anyway.

Most Americans are European mutts with ancestry to every single European country, so obviously we need broader/different terms to refer to people
Edit: also it’s only Europeans who don’t see it this way, Asians/Africans think you are all white.

This video feels like a fever dream i can barely follow 💀
Indeed
I thought we all agreed that the American term "white" means nothing outside America.
Yeah, it's like, so what? A Jew can be white, a Brazilian can be white, a South African can be white. It doesn't tell you much, really.
@@renanfelipedossantos5913 it tells you that they're white
It really means nothing inside of America either. White people calling their selfs white, same goes for black people calling their selfs black, etc. People that do this allow for their cultural heritage to be erased.
USA is the only country where colors mean so much. You can see it everywhere they just can’t live without a red camp or blue camp to follow.
@@ADarnSmore yeah, but what is the definition of white, out with the American context, lug nut?
Italy is a very young country.
Northern italy is VERY white.
Southern Italy is a big genetic mix.
I’m not black, I’m Jamaican 😭😂
right not black Caribbean 👍😂😂
Is you one of them white Caribbeans? Colonizer?
I'm guilty of this.
Jamaican isn't a race so you're still black 😂
I’m Guyanese, white people be like “what are you?”.
Me: “a person”. 🙃
As mixed as mixed can be.
Italians consider themselves "Italian" just as any other European considers themselves as their nationality first because we don't have to make our whole culture just our skin color, everyone's white anyway.
Perfect explanation!
😂😂the last part, you just think you are all white and period 😅
Manies speak the language of gods, this guy speaks the fucking language of facts
He’s referring to Italian Americans/Canadians
That’s how you ruin a joke! 👍
My husband is Roman but looks Arab, and it shows when we go to airports or have police encounters. He has never NOT been put into secondary. When we go to Arab countries they think he is a local.
Italians do consider themselves white, Americans who are 1% Italian don't
all 1% of Italian I found on my DNA test is offended.
Italians are as white as Iranians. This means you'll only be considered white among other whites after you ditch your culture.
Some Americans can have 99.9% European ancestry but .1% Native American and all of a sudden they're parading around in a headdress insisting to be called Chief. 😂
Tell me I'm wrong! Tell me!!!
Cuz I've seen this sht in my personal life...
DNA test says I'm 2% Neanderthal, so now I do Neanderthal rituals each morning.
@@squidvisthis is so real like in USA they’ll be like yeah I’m part Spanish and my great uncle was like Italian so-. Then they don’t even speak Italian OR Spanish.
Dear Americans, to the rest of the world you’re just American.
As a Sicilian, we are the black Italians 😂 even Italians don't see us as Italian lol
As an Italian I look in the mirror to understand which African country I come from 😂

"As far as I know if you speak Spanish you are Mexican." that part took me out. Lol.
I had to read it twice
I am pretty sure that there are white italians (silvio berlusconi) and black italians (mario balotelli). Just like you have some white americans (joe biden) and black americans (barack obama). Being italian is not a race, its a *nationality*.
"Are u white?" "No I'm cuban".
Cubans aren't white..
???
Worked for Al Paccino
Im cuban-italian
“are u black” “no im dominican”
Cuban are more usually black or the same as white passing black people and the light skins. Same thing

We are white plain and simple
Yeah he is being dumb, sorry, he is white. White Italians do not have the struggle of black Italians or black Americans.
