I can dig this. I remain astonished at some of these folks on social media who buy anything and everything that is a new release almost regardless of what it is. I have to wonder out loud how many of those movies actually get watched more than once and how much money they burned through. To be fair, I was in the habit for a long while of doing blind buys in the $5 to $10 range but ended up with a bunch of stuff that I didn't care to see a second time. Now I am much more selective. My collection got to the point where storage became an issue and I had to shrink my collection and move other stuff into sleeves or wallets. And it did become cumbersome choosing something when so much selection was available.

The large volumes of a collection just become overwhelming. Having such a wide choice sometimes ends in me making no choice because it’s just too much.
Yeah, it amazes me some of the purchasing habits and collections I’ve seen across social media.
Also amazes me watching folks go mental for some releases… recent example was Tremors 2 from Arrow, folks have rushed to get that, it’s nothing more than a straight to DVD movie, I see why some would like it in their collection but a limited edition hard box premium price release… nah, should never have had that lavish treatment or for it to sell out and become a must own.
Storage is a bit of an issue for me because I don’t want it over spilling from the areas I keep them. It kinda affects me a little mentally and becomes almost stressful.

Phill, you can't quit physical media, you just have to be way more selective. Instead of buying the new £70 edition of a film you already own, think to yourself do i need it? Give yourself 48hrs, if at the end of the 48hrs youre not thinking about it, then it wasn't really something you needed, if you are still thinking about it, then buy it. Its all about wants vs needs vs fomo.

I agree, I’ve already been pulling back from the lavish big limited editions for movies that I don’t personally care enough about. The standard edition does the job just as well if the movie isn’t an absolute gem for me.
I’ve found that giving certain titles that time has reduced the need for it massively. Sometimes I’ve not picked up certain movies at all before I’ve managed to catch it streaming.
I won’t fully quit physical media. I think I need to pause and hit the reset switch though

I used to buy a lot of new releases within the first few days
I now wait till they are on sale or I find them second hand
Nothing beats the feeling of finding a movie you are hunting in a second hand store or charity shop for $3-$5 a Blu ray

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  8 месяцев назад

Absolutely. That’s the kind of thing that I miss.
The amount of titles I picked up full price, didn’t watch and then saw the prices tumble has been ridiculous. The money I wasted just to have a title sat on the shelf.
I’ve waited on a few titles recently. Managed to pick them up under half the price which has also helped in me pulling back. Shawscope volume 2. Think it was £120 on release, managed to grab it for around £55. Under half the price and still even as a limited edition, available at a better price a little further down the line.
Things like that have certainly made me consider why the need to pick up straight away.

That sort of thing seems to bother me less now. There’s that much streaming and that much new stuff always coming out. I don’t think I’ll ever struggle for something to watch. So, how much would I actually go back to the older movies that I didn’t really like that much 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@PhillwithadoubleL Everyone has a limit, but what that limit is is different for everyone. I believe as long as any collection is organized and properly stored, there really is nothing wrong with size. Finding a title should be relatively easy, the climate should be controlled to avoid damage, that sort of thing. Collections that are small to large should follow this simple rule. Don't be a slob, careless. After that, it's purely an individual thing. I know I get a thrill mostly with the old releases getting Blu rays for the first time. 60s, 70s, lost gems getting Blu rays. I see a lot of new discovering older titles.

You’re right, some of the boutique labels are really dishing out some great titles. The discovery of some has been nice. Just a matter of trying to pick the right titles and having the time to properly appreciate the release.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Space is definitely an issue, I have a small house. And I admit, I have a few hundred Blu rays to organize and at least one new shelf to assemble. I also use totes for certain categories. One way to take a break, is maybe organize what you have, and only go looking again once significant progress is made. I'm kinda doing that now, it's just that 2023 was insane with corporations taking down streaming content to the left and boutique labels getting massive title increases to the right. I definitely went overboard in 2023, but I don't regret it. Historically, 2023 was insane for loss of content.

I’m not sure at what point I kinda stepped back and looked a bit closer at what I was doing with the collecting and collecting habit.
Think it may have been triggered when I’ve worked away from home and not had that collection. Realising that I didn’t ‘need’ all of the titles I had. It has been quite some time thinking things through and actually starting to take action.
I’ve found smaller steps have helped… taking titles off a shelf and seeing if I miss not having them there was the first step. Those titles in the boxes and out of the way. If I’ve not missed having them to hand for months then should I keep them 🤷🏼‍♂️

I mainly collect Boutique labels and classic movies and very rarely buy mainstream Hollywood movies they no longer interest me and also if I want to add this type of movie to my collection I will wait as they never hold their price and often drop down in price within a few months. I also have stuck with Blu Ray and not bothered with 4K as I’ve already purchased many movies in the past on VHS, then DVD and then Blu Ray.

I got a little carried away with some of the boutique labels. Buying films that were limited just incase. Have a bunch that will likely be sold on. Some I will keep and try to watch as they did interest me but I don’t need the amount I accumulated.

  • @gleamingtv3946

I have those same feelings. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sensing you feel guilty about collecting more titles because you have so much at home that haven’t been watched yet, it robs your joy of getting more. and it also makes you feel satisfied with what you already have. I think your not a full blown collector in the sense of collecting just to collect, though maybe you let the joy of collecting override thoughts on what’s best for you.
Being satisfied with one’s collection is very good. I never got into collecting for the joy of it(in itself), I just wanted to own the movies I knew about or grew up with, my second reason is to have an awesome 80s collection of horror, action and 80s teen movies, so it was just a hobby, I do buy other genre’s, older or newer titles but I’m more casual with them. If feels strange to say this but I’m not a movie guy, in the sense of “I love movies I need to own everything thats good”, because there’s thousands of movies that are good, watching them is fine, I don’t need to own them.
though having said that of course I have fallen into some collector habits on certain things, getting limited editions, being a completist on some line of releases, though I think it’s okay to have some little goals, but I think the key is not having a collector’s mentality of wanting too much.
Having a lot of movies can be overwhelming, but I think organization is important, I have them by genre so it gives me perspective, it makes my collection seem small, I see that I have few comedy, few 80s action, few Kung Fu movies etc… it helps me keep my sanity in check lol

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  8 месяцев назад

Yeah there is a certain amount of guilt there. I have titles that I do really care about but don’t give them much of a look because of the next that’s coming.
I’m a movie fan and have felt that collecting all of the movies is a way to kinda prove it. Reality is. Having a large collection doesn’t prove it to anyone else but yourself.
I’m starting to get a little more organised with things now though. Next video I’ll be showing some of what I feel like I’ve been hoarding / keeping / collecting for whatever reason as I try to clear things out. There will be a CEX trip / donations or whatever else to allow myself to get back to a point of a collection that I’m proud to say reflects me and my tastes over just the sheer number. Quality over quantity has got to be key for me… but then, by quality… it’s quality for me, not a rotten tomatoes score !

That's when your stuff starts owning you instead of the other way around.
You already talk a lot of sense, but you don't have to quit entirely. You need to find the right balance.
You could think a while about the top 200 titles from the past you really wish to keep.
Then get rid of the rest, starting with the ones you really know you can miss.
After a year you'll be proud to only have the best titles left, that mean something to you.
From then on you'll only have to focus on new releases. Buy no more than 2 or 3 titles a year.

Some of the more mainstream releases do seem to be pulling back from anything substantial. Wonder if they’ll drop back to the video diary type things that some directors did in the past ? I remember ones from Peter Jackson / Kevin smith and Snyder for some of their production. They often got plonked on a disc but it was nice to follow a production when they made the effort. RUclips is the perfect platform for some to continue providing that.
Yeah, there is a lack of stores now. I could still manage a day to go hunting around high street and also the pawn shops / charity shops or thrift stores which I never do any more because of that lack of anything new to me.

I say less is way more. I made mistakes buying lots of vinyl in the past and that turned into no living space and depression
I sold 80% off and I now I have a few crates of albums I could listen to non stop
I started collecting film after I learned my vinyl lesson. So I approached it differently.....I only have only about 230 movies I collected in the past 10 years.
I can walk over to my small shelf with wide open eyes and really feel the love of my favorites.
Collecting and such can become a different beast than what the person originally intended
If it’s bothering you and bugging you, I’d sell/donate a big portion of it without thinking about it. The idea might bring anxiety but once it’s gone you might feel a million times better and like your collection a lot more
It’s all person to person. I felt big relief cutting mine down. But if you have the time, space and sanity you might be alright

I’m going to be attacking things step by step. It might be a long process really but I’m hoping to film some as I go along and hopefully show a chunk of my collection and the type of things I’ve felt the need to buy and keep ahold of.
So many things still so easily accessible now. Be it from a store or from streaming. Not sure there are many (if any) titles that you just can’t get. There’s no need for people to keep so many. Despite big name directors convincing us that we’re ‘preserving’ content rather than hoarding it.

    Quit physical media?! Nooo! 😮
I can relate to many of your thought in this video. The other day I was in a massive physical media store (one of the few remaining) and I looked around for a long time hoping to find something to buy, but nothing struck me as interesting. It felt weird walking out of there without a purchase, but also kind of good.
I wouldn't say that I am quitting physical media, but I sometimes feel like my collection is complete. I have gone down all the rabbit holes of exploring this genre or that director. I know there will be more titles that I will pick up and certain titles that I am eagerly waiting for a physical release, but I feel like I am reaching an end of collecting which kinda makes me sad.
Will I still feel this way a week from now when I stumble on a bunch of titles I don't yet have at a thrift store? Who knows

And of course the James Cameron movies are out in a few weeks !
I’ve not found it being worth visiting a shop for a movie for a long time. I miss it. Just that reason to allow myself to break away and get lost in that retail store for an hour… not done it for so long.
I’ll be explaining more about my quitting physical media thought in my next video. More of a little experiment as I clear through some of my existing collection.
Do you manage to consume all you want on a release or do you find your attention soon drifts onto a newer arrival ?

      @@PhillwithadoubleL
Good question. When a title grabs me, I will take the time to dig into the extras, bonus features and listen to commentaries. If it doesn't grab me I move on quickly. I find that there are fewer movies that grab me like they once did, and I think that is due to the fact that I have seen so many films and pretty well mined all of the treasures. Not that there aren't still some out there, but they are harder to find.
I think that is what I miss the most is finding a movie that gets me excited enough that I want to dig deeper. So then I wonder if my movie exploration is waning.

I do find myself particularly drawn to certain directors and the behind the scenes they tend to provide.
