  • Both war and peace require imagination. But peace requires more. It is firmly earthed in the here and now, but not stuck there.
Pádraig Ó Tuama is a poet and a theologian. He is the leader of the Corrymeela Community, Ireland’s oldest peace and reconciliation organisation. Pádraig brings interest in religion, conflict and language to his work. Originally from Cork, he had a nomadic decade (Australia, Lithuania, Switzerland, the Philippines, Uganda) before settling in Belfast in 2003. Together with his partner Paul he began the monthly storytelling event Tenx9 in the Black Box in Belfast where nine people have up to ten minutes to tell a true story from their lives. His poetry is published by Canterbury Press and prose by Hodder & Stoughton.

Essential learning for all of us who face conflict and tell stories-thank you. I want every member of the US government to take in the messages so beautifully communicated here! May we be open, may we listen deeply, may we heal together. Mu.

Seamus might have been a good story teller, but you, Padraig are sublime.

Excellent; inspirational; Middle English enspire, from Old French inspirer, from Latin inspirare ‘breathe or blow into’ from in-‘into’ + spirare ‘breathe’. The word was originally used of a divine or supernatural being, in the sense ‘impart a truth or idea to someone’. in other words, the truth of it comes into you ' from on high', from the divine, if you will.

❤ in the late 80s a friend invited me to a talk at a Friends (Quaker) annual meeting on the similarities between quaker spiritual and native American spirituality - of course I said yes!
    Trust.
The speaker had been married into a Souix family in N Dakota - and talking about 'Indian time' she said, if you were on your way to a meeting and in a hurry, and saw along the way 'Aunt Annie' needing help - you would only be 'on time' to the meeting if you stopped, and offered help!
She herself had moved from the Dakotas back to Oregon, as her father was ill.
She had no job, and no place to stay beyond her father's - her quaker and her native friends helped her pack, whilst others worried and fused. ..
She arrived, and helped her father for awhile ... then feeling she needed to see about the next steps, went to visit the Friends' Meeting house - and on the notice board, there was an advert for someone to come in as a caretaker at the meeting house, with room and board as well as a moderate wage!
    Of course she said yes!
