When you hear an IFB preacher say that they are following the "old-time religion," it's good to keep that in context. To them, the old-time religion is the religion of when the IFB started, which was under J. Frank Norris. Their frame of reference only goes back to that point. But it's humorous to see Jack Hyles equate the 1940s and 1950s to "2,000 years" ago.

I agree, equating Fundamentalist Christianity with New Testament Christianity is quite the leap. It has always seemed to me that the culture was really the central point in the IFB, not the Bible or doctrine. If the Lord were to visit there would be a real 'come to Jesus' moment for most. American Christianity of the 40's and 50's left much to be desired then, and was the direct cause of what occurred in the 60's and 70's. The 'old time religion' everyone wants to sing about is not Christianity, it's paganism, and what we see across the board is a return to paganism. From what I have observed, Jack's preacher boys behave much like the freemasons, down to calling each other Brother. They network and associate only within their group, they cover over and protect criminals in their number, they wrest Scripture, have a uniform, do business amongst themselves, and abuse women and small children. One pastor I know of in particular 'taught with his fingers and spoke with his feet'. That is their 'old-time religion' and they can keep it.

@@TheProverbsmom What do you mean it's paganism?

@@DrGero15 Fundamentalist churches practice Christmas and Easter and other holidays, which were practices syncretized by the Catholic Church. Early churches did not practice these, and were often persecuted for not doing so. The church buildings usually feature spires and Hammond itself features Greco-Roman architecture, which all have their roots in esoteric temple building or masonry. There are usually 'altars', and an American flag with gold Fringe alongside a 'Christian' flag that has it's roots in protestantism, which remains a daughter of the apostate Roman Catholic church. They routinely celebrate the military, and war, as Rome did. They separate the children from the adults in Sunday School according to Darwinian evolutionary principles. They adhere to the ' man of God' doctrine which interposes a man between the believer and God and demands strict obedience. In just about every way possible, including the administration of the Lord's Table they have managed to subvert what the Bible says, and behave 180 degrees opposite to what the early church taught. There is no repentance and faith, but a prayer said like a mantra for salvation. Children are baptized. These are ALL pagan and through syncretization, Roman Catholic practices. Most are 501c3 which incorporates them as a creature of the state, much like Roman temples to various gods were subsidized and under the control of the Roman government. If you are 501c3, Caesar is your God, and he demands that you do not preach against public policy and that you inform him concerning your members, thus the communication cards and attendance records, as well as record of giving. The pagan power of the state has corrupted and infiltrated just about every group, and sad thing is, most don't even know it, and call the things they do, Christian.

Things you won’t find in the New Testament: church buildings with pagan phallic symbols (steeples) pointed to heaven, playing Sunday morning dress up in order to honor God, Christians being commanded to tithe on their income, the teaching that the Bible will only be preserved in a language which didn’t exist at the time the Bible was written, having a one-pastor system, addressing a man with the special religious title of “pastor,” only celebrating the Lord’s Supper once a quarter, salesman-type door-knocking approach to evangelism, many little cups and little crackers, that Christians should expect to escape tribulation, teaching that someone can live in an unrepentant lifestyle of sin and still go to heaven because “once saved (prayed), always saved,” to permit divorce and remarriage, that it is ok to join the military and kill your nations enemies as a Christian, to demand your right to own a deadly weapon, to get involved in earthly politics, that the frequency of your presence in a special religious building determines how godly you are, pianos and special music (wont help to go to the psalms- that was OT temple worship). IFB has corrupted biblical Christianity.

Everyone at some point says something outta context!! Why would you put forth the time and effort to make fun of these men! Most all of them preach the gospel!… why don’t you put your efforts into calling out heretics that don’t preach the gospel? Rather than making fun of a few statements these men make!!!
Just sayin… you may steer someone away from these men who say a few things outta context here and there and run them to a doctrine that don’t preach the Bible way to heaven.

People need Christ and his word, not old time religion. There's a difference between the two. Old time religion binds people to the law that Christ delivers believers from (GALATIANS 3). We're to walk in the Spirit instead of the law (GALATIANS 5:18).

Orthodox and Catholic TLM (not Novus ordo) have liturgy and hymns that go back to the early centuries. Protestantism came in the 16th century and progressively became more stripped and stranger and stranger as time went on, with narcissists starting their own denominations and decadence.

    that's preaching? no mention of:
    -the Glory of God
    -the Cross of Christ
    -the fellowship of the Spirit
    -the afflictions of Christ
    -the sufferings of the Saints
    -freedom in Christ
    -the preeminence of Christ
    -the mediation of Christ
    -the unsearchable riches of Christ
-the wisdom of God to us concentrated in Christ
-the prayers of Paul for the Epehsians, Philippians, Colossians
    -Christ being magnified in believers
    -the inheritance in Christ
    - ... and i COULD go on ... and on ...
this kind of preaching is a smokescreen for demanding subservience so the "preacher" can get what he wants out of life

Their “Old Time Religion” is 20th century religion, yeah, specifically 40s and 50s.
IFB churches are very contemporary in comparison to earlier churches.
How long did it take the church to finally accept pianos and stringed instruments into their worship services?
If you want to truly get a better feel for a VERY old fashioned service, I would look to a Nazarene or Apostolic church. Instruments are forbidden in services, their services can last for several hours, they sing and pray until they lose their voice, and elders basically control their congregations life even outside the church house. They’re very much cults, but they’re extremely old fashioned in their worship style. Easily 300-800 A.D style. Not exact, but pretty close.

@@iraqiimmigrant2908 From a liturgical belief stance, yes, but not completely in style.
Many of the early churches didn’t have the “liturgical look” Catholic or orthodox churches have. The early church wasn’t “high church” in appearance because they simply didn’t have it yet.
Not to mention the early church didn’t have organs. These churches today do.
My point remains that fundamental conservative Nazarene or Apostolic churches probably represent how an early church could have looked.

@@CC-iu7sqThat’s not true. Even in the earliest years of Christianity, during Pentecost, the services were conducted similarly to the Jewish liturgies. St. Justin Martyr in AD150 writes about the liturgy and Mass. Nazarenes and “Apostolics” (who misuse that title) are complete innovators.

@@icxcarnie You’re referencing writings from 150 AD when I specified somewhere between the 300 - 800 AD era. The amount of change is so significant between even just a couple of decades during the earliest eras.
Most of the liturgical beliefs weren’t in practice yet, there certainly wasn’t access to the architectural designs yet, and most of the decorations are post 1000 AD in design.
The earliest Christian churches that weren’t blended with Jewish tradition were simple. Not a lot of liturgy. Not a lot of decoration. And absolutely a lack of musical equipment.
And the largest churches that mimic that style would be the fundie circles of Nazarene and Apostolic congregations.
I’m not saying accurate in belief. I’m talking purely from a design perspective.

The answer to your question is somewhat veiled in your question 🤔…IMO any “denomination” or “movement “ is ultimately absent the Truth as The Truth is a Person not a denomination with its inherent man made customs and traditions.
I don’t mean to sound snarky because honestly I was very much a “Fundamentalist” as a came out of a Roman Catholic upbringing and thought I had found the truth there ; what I noticed however after many years in fundamentalism was that despite some obvious differences regarding Mary and Baptism and other things of course , Fundamentalism’s structure was eerily similar to Roman Catholicism without the “bells and whistles” ; IFB also changed the office of pope into the office of the untouchable , all knowing , Holy “man of God” ( “pastor”) who expects the same fidelity of the pope while one is a member of his club (church)
As if that wasn’t enough I started to see that what Fundamentalists generally preach and teach is for the most part devoid of mercy , grace , and the Love of Christ ; they’re the strict sect of the modern Pharisee’s.
