I'm a Third-generation American Japanese woman, who has seen both versions of Shogun. I totally loved the 1980's TV miniseries but appreciate this adaptation so much more. This version was so authentic, allowing me to be transported back to, what I imagine 16th Century Japan would have been like. Kudos to all of you. I have found a new sense of Pride in my culture. It was hard to be proud of my culture while growing up, because of Pearl Harbor. Again, deeply grateful. Job well done.....
I think Pearl Harbour was the least reason to not be proud of japanese heritage. The way the japanese behaved throughout the indo-pacific leading up to and during WW2 was a disgrace in its totality.
10:51 this is one of those details that millions of informed audience members would notice (and have noticed for a long, long time when it comes to samurai/katana when represented in western movies, vs how they are in real life and how they usually represented in Japanese movies). It's a small thing, but small things do add up. Major respect to the creators for going that far to make sure it's right. This also relates to what Hiroyuki Sanada says at 16:43 -- Both Hollywood and Japan have so many deep seated archetypes/tropes/stereotypes/traditions what have you when it comes to samurai and jidaigeki. It is *so* awesome that they went above and beyond to make something that is authentic, yet breaks away from those tropes. I'm certain it would never have happened were it a solely Japanese production, but it also never could've happened right without Japanese professional involvement. Just from two episodes alone it's clear this show is something special.
Agreed. I think Hiroyuki amazingly displayed quiet servant leadership, supporting and uplifting his colleagues. Good example for me to emulate. Thanks.
Hiroyuki Sanada in person is just so humble, almost embarrassed by the accolades being heaped on him, and so quiet spoken as opposed to the character that he portrays. He absolutely lives the character. Such great acting! He is so graceful and mesmerizing in how he commands your attention when he steps into the scene. He always looks so elegant and classy in these interviews! And being such a GORGEOUS badass doesn't hurt either🤤🤩😘!!!
Absolute masterpiece. Love it ❤ I rewatched the 1st episode an hour after with husband and he actually stayed awake which is rare for him. (He’d into had 3.5 hours sleep and had worked 15 hours. I couldn’t help myself and I watched the other 2 eps without him. I will be happy to rewatch. I was blown away by all the minute details and nuances as well as the grand scale of everything. Such a brilliant series!
Thank you Japan for ignoring the current idiotic Hollywood trends and just focusing on telling a story the best you can. Thank you for trying your best to represent that fascinating historical context with its culture and politics. Thank you for respecting your audience instead of trying to spoon feed it with badly written nonsense.
10:20 the one knock I have on the series (and its a very small knock) is the filming location was obviously the Pacific Northwest and not Japan. You might see some of those pine/fir trees and shrubbery in Northern Honshu or Hokkaido but not Osaka or Shizuoka.
@4:11 The comment about audiences becoming more accepting of reading subtitles has to be more for English speaking countries particularly the USA because I think non native English speaking countries are pretty used to it.
Thanks to Canon and SONY, I LOVE Japan! I told that to the Japanese ambassador to Canada when I met him. And of course now, I LOVE JPOP! But I can't learn Japanese. It would take all the charm out of Jpop if I did! If I lived in New York, I would be a regular at the Japan Society. I love Japanese movies and media!
Japan actors were brilliant especially characters of Mariko Toranaga and Fuji . Jarvis as a Blackthorne was a biggest movie disaster , unconvincing, lacking passion , showing mostly a kind of a moron face
it's a great show, very well made, produced, acted and so on. but if one goes for authenticity with the Japanese language and subtitles, and rightly so, isn't it a bit of a cop out to have the Portuguese speak English? either go full on, or don't,
Bad idea. The translation scenes are key, and if the audience had needed to read through two sets of subtitles, one for Japanese, one for Portuguese, it would have lessened the power and themes of the story. (That does also mean the story will work less well for audiences who speak neither English nor Japanese, but hey ho.)
As for me - disappoinment so far. Pity. I have read a book , have listened ABs, and I have seen previous tv vesion 80 several times. This new one- no music at all, a lack of genius loci , dull colours... Deformation of a story - eg. a brutal illogical end with cannons of 4. episode- Use "sniper" cannons to eliminate enemy, who is in proximity etc, etc.... . The cast- in version 80 much better. Nevertheless I will follow next episodes. New version is aimed on VG kids.
@@tjk3430 I recommend to everybody to read a book- immediately. You could finish it in 6 - 8 days. You could understand much better what going on there and enjoy a story. An Audiobook narrated by Ralph Lister, is terrible. He made Blackthorne in an agressive way. (Not only my opinion). I am lucky to hear AB Shogun also in another language ( even 2 versions) - absolutely superb experience.. I recommend also a non- fiction book- Samurai William, by Giles Milton.v
@@manK2022The show already has everything explained and acted out clearly and concisely in a flowing manner thus far. I don't need to read the book to understand anything further. Edit: Even if the show had altered a few aspects of the book to incorporate their own authenticity into it, it's still, I believe, very true to the sense of the book, and, obviously, stays very true to how every thought and action was accurately (definitely not perfectly for the sake of originality) portrayed back then during 1600

I'm just so happy Hiroyuki Sanada is also producing this epic show! What a legend!
he is the reason the show was mostly Japanese spoken(makes it so much more authentic)
Hiroyuki is a gem.
He’s a legend.
We need him starring in more Hollywood TV and films. He's a legit movie star.

So, essentially, Hiroyuki became the Toranaga to the entire cast. Wow. Just Wow.
He's the shogun both on-screen & off-screen.
Agreed. I think Hiroyuki amazingly displayed quiet servant leadership, supporting and uplifting his colleagues. Good example for me to emulate. Thanks.
What kind words from Hiroyuki to praise Anna. Thank you for making this series. It's been great every week
The love, time and effort that everyone poured into this show really shines through - it's wonderful!
They all seem like such lovely people. It’s an amazing accomplishment. I hope it wins all the awards.

Yes. He is. So humble. Really excellent producer. Very detailed.
Hiro-san is definitely the heart of this show.

This show better win the award shows in almost every category or we riot
So happy for him, he deserves the recognition. Love him to pieces!
A superb film that shows what happens when teamwork combines with cultural diligence.
Outstanding work! Hiroyuki became a living legend. I'm filled with respect and admiration. Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
This is an absolute masterpiece of a series. Congratulations! 🎉
Omg when Anna is about to cry... These guys definitely were close
For those wondering, listen from about 18:18, that's where Hiro says what makes her tear up (in a good way, of course!)

SHOGUN definitely a masterpiece 10/10 every single episode! Just WOW!
Absolutely engaging, amazing series. Stunning from a visual perspective and captivating in its story and acting! Remarkable!!!
Such a good panel, thank you so much!
THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!!!
Thank you, that was very interesting.
Excellent series.
Great series, you can tell that the crew that worked on it strived to make it authentic
What a masterpiece.
great interview
ANNA!!!!

素晴らしい英語です。🤭将軍の作品です。真田広之さん🤗そして、他の役者の人達も🇯🇵此れからも頑張って下さい。

*TONARAGA-SAMA!*
If only Mulan was done this way and written by Chinese authors
Where is Cosmos Jarvis? He was great!!!
Did Anna spend a significant amount of time in the US because her English is definitely American English?
Yes, her parents are Japanese but she was raised mainly in the USA.
anna sawai showing her tongue is soooo hootttt
hiroyuki sanada is the new age Toshiro Mifune
they are all so introverted, omg hahaha
Where's Cosmo?
Interesting they didn't invite the Pachinko cast to an event.
10/10
Why is the host only asking Justin? There are 2 showrunners!
hes white. This show caters to whites.
What do you mean? Rachel was asked a very thought out question at 12:36
Japan actors were brilliant especially characters of Mariko Toranaga and Fuji . Jarvis as a Blackthorne was a biggest movie disaster , unconvincing, lacking passion , showing mostly a kind of a moron face
"...only worked 10 months on show." I'm going to interpret that in the worst way meaning I fear for Mariko's survival in the show.
I just don't think it was diverse enough lol
How?
it's a great show, very well made, produced, acted and so on. but if one goes for authenticity with the Japanese language and subtitles, and rightly so, isn't it a bit of a cop out to have the Portuguese speak English? either go full on, or don't,
might have been too many subtitles for a western audience. it's an fx production after all. i was pretty blown away tbh
Bad idea. The White Savior Trope
what is he saving? he is trapped in a foreign country with no control over what happens to himself or anybody else . Also its based on a real story .
How?
He was Toranaga's plaything. Mariko died. He adapted the Japanese way.
Again...how?

I'm glad I didn't see '1980 or read the book before seeing this show because I'm loving it. Would visit the original afterwards.

So disappointing The movie falls short of the original Shogun which is a classic.
Vynikajúci herci, vašim hereckým výkonom ste zviditeľnili bohatú históriu Japonska 👍👍👍
