How does Takoma Park do it?

  • On the surface Takoma Park, Maryland appears to be an island of small-town civility surrounded by a sea of typical suburban sprawl. Its main street is populated by small independent businesses, often with long roots in the community. But lately there are small signs of encroachment. Are the Subway sandwich shop and CVS drug store harbingers of the beginning of the end of Takoma Park's tight-knit, home-grown business community? How has the small municipality been able to hold back the tide of national chains big box superstores, while nurturing local business growth? Is Takoma the last of a dying breed? Or possible a model for smart planning other small towns could follow? University of Maryland Graduate Students Karen Carmichael and Jamie McIntyre report.

Moved here a year and a half ago from CA to be close to kids and grandkids. Love it. Always try to shop local. But Silver Spring is just a mile away too. And we are please to be getting more affordable housing and a Busboys and Poets.

If only people knew the difference between "Takoma Park" and "Takoma DC" then they would realize the CVS is not in Takoma Park. Admittedly the Subway restaurant is in Takoma Park. This is more than just a trivial difference; it is being across a state line and having a different government.

I like Takoma, but having CVS is great because I can walk to get anything.

Nice video, even if it doesn't answer whether Takoma is unique or a model.
FYI: at 7:57 the caption reads "Old Tokama" instead of "Old Takoma"

Takoma Park residents pay the highest tax rate in Montgomery County. The city of Takoma Park has the highest crime rate of any incorporated city or unincorporated area of Montgomery County. Is this the kind of "small town" in which most people want to live?

Louis Wilen takoma park and takoma D.C. are very different places. If you've ever lived in this city you know that it's extremely safe I've walked around late and night I'm never scared or nervous walking around my neighborhood
