  • You're stuck in the middle of nowhere and need to use your winch to get unstuck, but your winch line is severely damaged. What do you do? In our continuing series of winching videos,, Nena demonstrates how to do an on-the-spot field repair of a damaged winch rope, and how to use the remaining rope as a winch line extension. The key is being prepared with the right tools and knowing how to use them. More winching videos are on the way soon so don't forget to like and subscribe if you'd like to see more from Trailwise - and tell us what you'd like to see more of in the comments below. Thanks for watching and happy trails!

Yet another instructive video. I own a Factor 55 Fast Fid but have never had to use it.

Thanks for watching! I hope you never HAVE to use it, but it’s very useful to have if you do! 💪🙌

Nena, retired Paramedic here. The "Fast Fid" is essentially an oversized Cardiac Stent. Used in cardiac catheterizations and are slid inside the lumen of the vessel to open/keep open Coronary Arteries in a heart attack scenario.....who knew LOL!

LOL! Good to know! I hope I don’t have to use it for THAT in the field! 😜

That's basically what knitters know as a Russian Join. Love it when interests collide!

I use electrical tape for splicing. On more complex stuff, it's nice to have two colors.

The thing I like about packing tape is how wide it is, so less winding to cover everything. But electrical tape is something I always have with me in the rig…packing tape not so much. 😎

@@jeepschool They make electrical tape in wider versions. Easy on amazon.

Could you have spliced the end with the factor 55 back into the drum line? Seems like it would work and would maybe give near-full winch utility.

You need the loop for a strong connection. Feeding it straight in is not likely to hold in a winch pull.

Great video, Nena! I was a little surprised at the end when you connected the two lengths of line with a screw pin bow shackle. Isn’t that a potential projectile? Not trying to be a smartass - I was just told never to join lines this way. Please advise.

Although I would normally prefer a soft shackle, in the video I explain that since there is no thimble or sleeve on the one loop, the wider and smoother surface of the bow shackle is less likely to cause a rope failure than the rope-on-rope connection. And one more thing-you should always assess the load factor on a piece of equipment, eliminate friction and double and triple check for twisting. If you have done your work, there should be very little risk of a properly rated and installed bow shackle becoming a projectile. Ask me how I feel about line dampeners. 😎

@@jeepschool thanks for the detailed reply. How DO you feel about line dampeners?!? 🤪

@@jeepschool ... so how do you feel about line dampers? They have never made much sense to me.
