    I never watched LOST when it initially aired on ABC. I found a bunch of DVDs at the Goodwill and I was able to binge-watch it in a few weeks. LOST was awesome and I was hooked! But the ending was indeed less than overwhelming. The problem was that I think the writers got bored with it after Season 3 and wanted to wrap the thing up, so they just kept adding a lot of weird occurrences, McGuffins, and magical thinking. The best speculative fiction (as SEVERANCE is) asks the audience to believe only one main "thing" and the dramatic action stems from this premise.
    Another show, also produced by Damon Lindelof, that showed a lot more writing discipline, is THE LEFTOVERS. This show poses the question, what would happen if an event like The Rapture happened today? Hundreds of millions of people suddenly vanish without a trace. We don't know why or how, so it is kind of a puzzle box, but there is great emotional depth to how the characters deal with their grief, shock, and curiosity. It's not a downer; it's exciting, and the casting and acting, the cinematography and the iconography are spot on! I have only watched the first season, which was amazing. It ends where the book upon which the series is based ends. I am told that Season 2 and 3 are even better, and I'm trying to get them now. I definitely got a Severance vibe from the show and it is also partly filmed in the same area of suburban NY as SEVERANCE (Westchester and Rockland Counties.)
    But the thing that reminds me most of SEVERENCE is a movie , Jordan Peele's GET OUT. I think there at least one character I keep thinking of when I watch SEVERANCE. Ms. Casey is definitely reminding me of the mysterious Housekeeper. I wouldn't be surprised if she inspired Ms. Casey.

    • @derekhiemforth
      @derekhiemforth 3 месяца назад +1

      I don't think the problem was the writers getting bored... I think the problem was that it was difficult to plot out evenly because they had no commitment from ABC about how long the show would run. So some episodes feel kind of like thrown-together filler because they basically are. LOST lasted six seasons and 115 episodes. If the creators could have been told earlier that it would last five seasons and 100 episodes, I think it would have been a lot tighter overall. Of course, I've also been accused of being a LOST apologist because I thought the ending was okay. 😉

      @@derekhiemforth I think I read somewhere that after the third season of LOST, the network wanted it to go on as long as possible. But Lindelof, et al, would only agree to 3 more seasons. They had plenty of time to craft a more coherent ending. Season Six wasn't terrible. It wasn't like the last season of GAME OF THRONES, but IMHO it was just OK.

I watched lost when it aired in europe originally and stopped after season 3 bc it got annoying and I it seemed to me as if the writers didn't know what story they wanted to tell. after the finale disappointed so many people, I felt validated a never finished it.. maybe I could revisit it. a show I watched recently that reminded me of "severance" a lot is "the other black girl", a mystery show that's more comedic but taps into the same vein as "severance" regarding office culture and identity in the work place, or how you relate to your work in a company or environment that obviously has a "dark past". or how would you compare "the other black girl" to "severance"? thanks!

    I'd have to throw Sense8 into this conversation. Cognitive Dissonance is the name of the game when it comes to both shows and Sense8 is just a masterclass in filmmaking, easily the Wachowskis best in my opinion, and BRUTALLY robbed of editing and cinematography emmys. With a diverse and interesting af main cast, a memorable and fun side cast, and unique, intriguing premise, it's hard for me not to watch the show annually lol. It's such a shame that it feels like so few people have seen it.

    I have a thought about something that might have already been said. What if the " work" the inies do is meant to weed out traits and control the outies behavior? Getting them to be spies and/ or sabotage other companies, the purposes of the company. "Mind control". The inies have a subconscious ability to analyze themselves from the inside of their brain. And the company orchestrates the trauma of their future employees to push them to want to go through the procedure. Hence making them alter their own brains via the chip for the cause of the company. Maybe Helly was exhibiting"bad behavior" and was preparing her to take over the company by changing her behavior to fit what the company needs after daddy dies.

    Have you touched on the cannibalism theory ¿ the goats, waffle parties and food cards to a restaurant. Maybe they are living in some sort of post apocalypse world¿ the paintings, etc. I think there is some connection to the food supply. I enjoy your content my boy.

    I think Succession deserves to be in that list. Sure, theres no mystery box, but the mystery box was not really the point of season 1 either. It was more about the characters and their lives in that dystopic capitalistic world. Succession tackles the same theme, just from the opposite direction, focussing on the super rich.

    1. Lost, absolutely yes. Agree agree agree and for those who lean into the "ending makes no sense" category; it does!
    2. Glad you enjoyed Constellation but it's a slog to get through. Unenthused, lethargic storytelling on a backdrop that Fringe and Extant both did much better with a more compelling cast and characters
    3. Really keen to try Homecoming! Will give it a go!

      The ending doesn't live up to the journey, for sure. It's not nearly as bad as GoT or Dexter, but it wasn't what we wanted lol. If you can look past that and enjoy the many stories that take place along the way you might feel like it was still worthwhile, as I did. The story is epic. It's a huge ask, given all the episodes, so I hear you!

    It was kinda low key when it came out probrably a decade ago now. It was either a BBC show or like, Canadian. Something like that... bu it was fantastic. Tatiana Maslany playing like 10 different characters. She is brilliant. The show is great. Keeps you guessing. Deep plot. Good stuff check it out.

    Personally, I never understood the hate the Lost finale got. Maybe it's just misunderstood? I'm not sure what people were expecting, but I thought it was pretty well done, and they answered the majority, if not all, of the questions if you pay close enough attention throughout the series.

      If you check out the LOST DVDs from the library, there are plenty of extra features documenting all aspects of the making of the series, as well as multiple episodes with commentary by cast and crew.
      Also 2024 is the 20th anniversary of the premiere of LOST and there is a documentary film being made to commemorate that called GETTING LOST. I'm definitely going to watch it, even though I'm not one of the original "Losties."
      But for the truly obsessed, this year there will be a concert and a premiere of the film in Hawaii. Although if I won the lottery with "bad numbers" I might think twice about flying there!

    I'm starting to think the quality of the ending of LOST is dictated LARGELY by how you experience LOST.
    It seems the vast majority (not all) of people upset with its ending were the people who hung on every episode of its original airing, week after week after impatient week, waiting for answers they didn't REALIZE were given to them.
    The answers to LOST aren't spoon fed to the audience. And a lot of people don't want to "work" for their entertainment.

    • @SuburbanSlave
      @SuburbanSlave 3 месяца назад

      I only recently discovered LOST and I binge-watched it, which is a very different experience than watching "appointment TV" where you have to show up week after week for years.
      It doesn't make Season 6 less lame, but at least I didn't wait years for some kind of emotional payoff!

    I think I started Homecoming, but I only have a vague memory of it, as if I watched the entire series before dropping off to sleep. I'm not even sure if I finished it or not. I will give it another chance. Constellation looks great. All the rest I have seen and agree they are definitely Severance-worthy. I really liked Westworld and wish it could have finished out the series, but I get why people don't love it the way I do.
    Another good one is The Prisoner (1968) about a super spy who is kidnapped and wakes up in The Village which may, or may not, be a psyop. Retro aesthetic, even for its time. Puzzlebox weirdness. Exploration of free will and identity. No clear idea of what's happening. The full first episode is here: ruclips.net/video/osNmf_zmSyE/видео.html
    True Detective season 5 was pretty great. Seemingly supernatural weirdness.
    The alien masturbation scene in Maniac is one of the most astonishing and hilariously cringeworthy scenes I have ever watched.

      Hey, GG! I'm alright, still standing. I still hold Lost in high regard, despite it all. Probably because of how much Lost upped the game when it came to production quality on TV. Silver linings. GoT, well I haven't watched the final season (and I never will). I'm just gonna leave that one where it is. I think you would like "Homecoming", if I had to wager. It's got Mr. Robot's DNA and the creep-factor is through the roof. It just manages to do it with a subtlety that sets it apart from Mr. Robot.
