He's a very brave and bold animator. The screenplays and visuals never pandered to a child audience, and they laid out some very adult themes dealing with death, violence, cultural persecution and the concepts of the afterlife. Sure, they provided the viewer with happy endings every time, but I think they didn't shy away from letting kids understand complex emotions and difficult situations. I can remember being horrified by the cats in An American Tail, or the seer owl in the Secrets of Nihm, or the hellscape in All Dogs Go To Heaven. I think Titan AE was criminally underrated, as it had the unfortunate timing of being one of the final 2D animated films to be made in the early 2000s. It's been brilliant to watch Don Bluth films.
Always had a happy ending my ass. the ending of Land Before Time is a thin allegory for the dinosaurs dying and finding themselves in "the Great Valley" which is a lush oasis in the middle of barren deserts, shifting earth and molten magma which the first time seen is showcased goldenly y'know... like Heaven. And it was supposed to be less subtle before they changed the ending after feedback saying it was too messed up.
I agree and the book goes into far more detail. Like how the Drej had sent a spy to Earth and that’s how they found out that their worst fear was about to come true which is why the Drej destroyed the Earth.

The best part? these are incredibly influenced by his own style, which incredibly difficult these days. I'm not disrespecting any animator or their works. But, if you watch any animation clips/ sakuga, you'll noticed that certain people has those 'style' to them. Don Bluth, Sinya Ohira, or even Yutaka Nakamura, has that distinct style (or at least any old veteran in the business). Shinya Ohira with his insane surrealist takes, while Yutaka Nakamura more direct and simplistic approach that focused on a lot of lines and smear lines.
Say what you want about Bluth and his later films from the 90s but you can't deny that he is an animation genius. His films always had an impact in my life as a kid moreso than disney films.
He is so well known for his mouth movements that a few slower clips with characters speaking while shaking their heads (his signature) would’ve been great! But this video was still really nice, and a good way to celebrate him going back to Disney. Hopefully to work on another 2D film!
honestly, i'm just tired and getting bored by it. CG/ 3D animations were literally abused these days, ever since Pixar popularized it. Pixar was never destroyed 2D animated movies based on how good the 3D animation only. They just able to make a more relatable story and morals than Disney at the time, and because of that audience up until now still flocks to their movies

Man dude this video hit me way too hard in my feels. Anastasia was probably one of my favorite films growing up. Hearing Once Upon a December playing while clips of it and many other movies I have fond memories of such as All Dogs Go To Heaven and An American Tail was absolutely breathtaking. Too much nostalgia in one video I swear
that climax of All Dogs Go To Heaven with the clock slowly filling with water and slowing down with a heartbeat sound is still SO INTENSE. no wonder i was such a dramatic little kid lol

It was a wonderful time to grow up...looking back, I realize that I learned a LOT about style, creativity, imagination and innovation watching all of those animated films as a kid where I thought I was just having fun. It's sad that kids now do not have the quality we had growing up...if I ever became a mother, most of what they'd be watching would definitely be the films I grew up with.
I only saw All Dogs go to Heaven once as a kid in a daycare but it has stuck with me for over a decade. I just remember the visuals being so unique and beautiful, along with the hell scene and even the concept of the movie scaring me. I need to see it again.
I do know of a few scenes he personally animated Rabbit getting lost in the woods in Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, most of the Rescue Aid Society song from The Rescuers and Bernard and Bianca running in the rain, most of the earlier scenes with Widow Tweed and little Tod in The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood and Maid Marian in the Love Goes On and On scene from Robin Hood as well as Robin going back to save the littlest bunny and Robin interacting with the kids.
It's a shamed disney decided to throw all their 2d animators out of a job. What an amazing medium of art that's unfortunately wasted to an audience of children.
Not only that, I'm not paying attention to any of Disney movies released after 2010 mainly because they're in 3D ONLY. I was raised with exposure to traditional 2D animation, which has made my childhood, but 3D replacing 2D has ruined it for me.
I wish 2D and 3D would both flourish, without one medium sacrificing itself for the other, but in the end it's only about the bottom line for animation companies
Well 3d is a very beautiful medium in its own right. I love both however I’ve always wanted to be a traditional animator rather than a 3d one as I always preferred it. Although that was the case back then, i find joy in bringing characters to life regardless. I love both 3d and 2d but i do wish both could be as popular. Last year we got Klaus a completely frame by frame animated film that looks like its 3d. It was a huge success, hopefully this will spark the inspiration for more 2d films. We just got news about Don Bluth and his new animation studio, he wants a new era of traditional animated films, a new renaissance. However it’s always hard to really keep our hopes up with Bluth at this point. It’d be nice but if all fails at least we still have Japanese animation.

Don Bluth is underrated American Miyazaki. So sad that this genius's talent was fainted. He could done so much for the world of animation, even more than he has already done. His career died and resurrected like a phoenix from the ashes. Salute to one of the greatest artist that a world has ever seen.
The dancers from the portraits in Anastasia remind me of Charlie as a ghost in All Dogs Go To Heaven...these are something you wouldn't find in Disney movies.
Patrick McKenna Don Bluth drew plenty of perverted and sexual things. The women in his animations were very sultry with big breasts and heavy lids. Look at Dragon’s Lair Princess Daphne, and Rock a Doodle’s Goldie.
The only thing that even touches this level of masterpiece is the anime akira. Can't think of a single piece of animation that tops this level of detail.

Disney had still a few films before latest with Aladdin the old days were gone for good and since Aladdin all moves were by nature adult movies disguised as 'family movies'. Lots of adult jokes and for the kids the typical 'sugar high' characters but all done by the same simplistic formulated cliches. :/
Good animation quality but I hate his character designs, especially the animal ones. The mouth movements and the flopping tongues and the teeth make me so uncomfortable. I think that’s why I could never watch All Dogs Go To Heaven as a kid, that dog was just grotesque to me and it’s mostly the way they drew the mouth.

Bluth's work has always had a visual richness beyond anything by Disney. It's a real shame he's not active anymore.

Seeing hand-drawn animation that's 30 years old + always blows you away, seeing computer-generated animation that's 10 years + always underwhelms.
