I would just like to say that I recently bought a pen from you guys; reason being that I wanted a nice pen for writing get-well-soon cards for the patients at my surgery clinic. The nurses were having a blast seeing my messages in those cards, and it was fun while it lasted. But due to the high patient count in my office, my manager decided to transfer that writing privilege to someone else. Condolences to that part of my job that I really liked. In any case, you made a pen accessible to me, and I have absolutely loved it: not only the pen itself, but also the fact that I got it from you instead of someone else. And the customer service is just glorious. Thank you truly.
Also, it's my 10th anniversary of being a fan of yours! It was my first time buying a pen from you recently, but it has been 10 years since you guys first popped in my RUclipss, and I've been loving the content ever since. Happy decade, happy Tenniversary!

Fun fact: Tigers are striped and orange because (although they appear orange to humans) to common prey like boar or deer, that orange will apear as green. That's also why deer hunters usually wear an orange vest. They'll be camouflaged for the deers but other hunters can still see them.

Good discussion about the arts and feeling more complete when you get to do those things. I started writing when I was a kid and then didn't for a long time (after getting married). In about 2014 I thought "this not being a writer thing is old" and started writing again. I've had 2 poetry chapbooks published, I'm working on a full-length collection, and started a (very small) publishing company. Go create, anything and everything. It's so important to be able to express yourself and let that out.

Brian and Drew! The secret to the bag trauma is to buy containers to decant your cereal or coffee in to keep it fresh. I can't stand stale cereal or coffee, so I have a big glass container that does the rubber ring/metal hinge thing for my coffee, and I've put cereal into Tupperware when the bag has split on me. It's a handy compromise if you can get the other people in your house to use them too!
Enjoying the pencast with hot coffee and cheez-its! Love you guys!

Speaking of sticking posters to walls, you can actually put down a rectangular frame of painters tape to protect the wall. Then you add a layer of double sided tape on top of the painters tape. This will hold up the poster and should be easily removed from the wall when you're done without damaging the wall.

Here's an enhance converter ink behind the piston fix. Use a syringe bulb cut to fit snuggly on the converter, compress the syringe, attach it to the converter and let it do the work. No finger suction marks and it provides a continuos vacuum to pull the ink out. But wait, there's more. I first used this concept for an even more irritating problem; ink behind an cap liner. I couldn't disassemble the cap to clean it and using this same concept pulled the ink from behind the cap liner completely and quickly. It's best to leave it vertical with the cap opening facing downward.

For Drew, accordions come in different sizes, just like pianos, some bigger like a concert grand, some smaller like a spinet. A friend of mine played an orchestral size accordion in a traditional Irish band. His bandmates called it the "Stomach Steinway". Concertinas are smaller and hexagonal in shape. Another Irish band I knew included a bass concertina which they affectionately referred to as the fart-o-phone.

I'd just like to add that in between the accordion and the concertina (or constant screamer as they're known around here) are diatonic button accordions aka the melodeon which aren't chromatic instruments but come the keys of d/g or c/f etc. They're the squeezebox of choice for most folkies over here in the UK.

Hey Brian and Drew, I just wanted to thank you for a couple of things, firstly for your knowledge and enthusiasm which (along with my partner's small collection) helped me find my way back to fountain pens (I'd desperately loved and coveted them as a child but only ever had the £3 crappy sus80s/90s ones and awful exercise book paper so thought I could not write with them. Rediscovering their beauty, and that I can write without pain is GLORIOUS. Thank you. Secondly: It's Big Deadline month over here, with end of term teacher reports and book drafts both due, and old episodes of Pencast have been keeping me company and sane as I write.
Newbie question: I have a Christmas Pen budget! I love my TWSBI Eco though not the barrel cracking, and my Brass Sport, where somehow the weight doesn't feel heavy and it almost helps the pen move itself. My safaris were my gateway pens and I love the stub nib though on bad pain days the grips hurt for longer sessions. I like M, and 1.1/ 1/5 stub nibs. And I'm looking for something comfortable and smooth writing for looooong novel writing sessions. Should I go LAMY 2000?Aion? Esterbrook Estie? Pilot E95s or Custom 74? Benu? I've caught the pen bug and want them all but because I can't get somewhere to try them, don't know what my 1st big upgrade should be.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 месяцев назад +1

I love the E95s, but it wouldn't be ideal for long sessions. Of the ones you mentioned, the Custom 74 and the 2000 would probably be best! Also, thank you sooooo much for taking the time to drop in some kind words! 😊 - Drew

Brian nailed the problem with nitpicking about invented worlds of sci-fi/fantasy; it reminded me of the classic SNL skit with (the actual) Bill Shatner at a comcon taking questions about Star Trek, upon which he goes into a diatribe about “get a life!”; “what’s the matter with you people?” that was so on point it was as hilarious!

Brian, for hanging posters: 3M command strips, but I don't like their specific poster hanger ones, I find the clear bathroom ones actually work the best, especially if you have textured (or in our case, plaster) walls. Also: As a warmup or dynamics exercise if nothing else, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is super fun on Tenor. The octave jump is a good embouchure exercise, too!
Drew: We honestly solved the cereal bag issue by buying some plastic OXO containers for it at Costco. I don't eat cold cereal generally (just not a fan), but my husband and stepkids do. Every one of them opens like a beast and never closes the bag properly, so it goes basically instantly stale...and then they refuse to eat it. And I refuse to buy it when we have brand new boxes sitting around more or less untouched. So now whoever opens the bag pours all of it into the big plastic container and they so far have no problem remembering to close that. Problem solved for $15.

We started a little game of hiding "the lion" as we call it, for the other one to find. It's super fun. The thing sometimes hides for months waiting to be found because we choose kinda rarely visited spots in the house.

I love the M600 Glauco Cambon and am so excited it's my first Pelikan. Wanted to get into the brand but wanted something special, and it DELIVERS. As cool as it looks on the video, it really is better in person as others have said. That "Aurora" process they have seems pretty special.
As for the weight Brian commented on, it feels so good in the hand because it is heavier than a resin M600 (28g Glauco Cambon vs. 18g "standard" per the Goulet website).... Pelikan used a brass body on this one, so it's the same weight as an M800, but with the great "everyday" size of the M600. This along, with the special process, make this a very special M600
    😃

When i had posters on the wall as a kid (2 walls, ceiling to floor) i used scotch tape loops, which really didn’t mar the paint, but the trick is, once you take them down, i cut the loops with scissors and flattened them to the back of the poster, which ultimately reinforced the corners. 😊

I love Drew’s thoughts about artistic pursuits. So well said. I’m so happy for Brian having music in his life again! My degree is in piano performance and music composition, but there’s a definite intensity involved with music practice. I’m mom to an autistic teen, and when I get some personal time, I need less intensity. I have found calligraphy & handwriting practice to have many similarities to piano practice, and I get to use my pens. I’m grateful to have a creative equivalent that works for now. I play the piano in my mind every day, and I hope to return to it in the future. Kudos to Brian!
I share Drew’s horror with the torn cereal bags! In our coastal climate, exposed cereal would be soggy in a few days, so if the top seam does not yield to gentle persuasion, I use kitchen scissors.
Love the festive sweaters! Thanks for the Pencast!

And I've watched some... I love your relaxed yet very informative sessions.. And it's a shameyou don't have a European online shop as you would be very competetive..maybe an idea? 😊 Thank you!,

I work at a hotel front desk part time and bought myself a Pilot Vanishing Point as a present to myself for getting a new and better job. Since we tend to write quick little notes to ourselves throughout the shift, I thought a Vanishing Point was a perfect fit. On my first day, I had it laying on a small notebook I brought to take notes while I am training. The manager who hired me and is such a lovely person, grabbed it without realizing what it was, clicked it open and proceeded to write herself a note WITH THE NIB UPSIDE DOWN before I could stop her. She looked at it funny when it didn't write well and I said, "Um, it's a fountain pen." She said, "Cool" and proceeded to write the rest of her note with the nib still upside down before I could say, "Let me show you how to use it". Fortunately, she had a light hand and no damage was done. Maybe I need to just bring a Lamy or something inexpensive and easy to uncap to work because that experience was completely unnerving. I used to use a Platinum Preppy at work but it sometimes skipped if I left the cap off for a few minutes. Any advice appreciated.

On Washi tape: it is made of rice paper, rather than regular cellulose pulp (as paper is). Rice paper has longer fibers, making it resistant enough but delicate enough to cut with your fingers. The glue used for them is low tack, like sticky notes, which makes washintape repositionable

Drew and Brian, If your turkey is dry, please consider brining it and being careful with the internal temperature. There is no reason a turkey needs to be dry. There are ways to make this one of the best meals you will cook with your families. Most people overcook their turkey and that is why it becomes dry. Use a good quality thermometer that is properly placed in your bird. You can do this!

Brian was talking about his difficulty sticking posters effectively and I need to shout out, specifically, the Velcro Command strips. You stick one to every corner, connect all the Velcro, and press it to the wall like a big sticker. If you ever have to move it, you can easily peel the Velcro off without hurting the poster. Plus, it adds a little bit of space between the poster and the wall just for a little more pop.

Brian, I have no idea if it's written for tenor sax, but Harlem Nocturne is so beautiful. The first time I heard it, the musician played it in a sultry, sexy way that transported me to 1930s Harlem. By the time he finished, I was weeping over the beauty. Check it out!

The internet can be such a negative space. Thankfully,I rarely find it in your pencast comments.
Drew, I'm with you. I watch movies for enjoyment. I don't want to over analyze it. I get sick of people nitpicking everything. Love sci-fi, but with you about JarJar Binks, what were they thinking.
Must say that the Pelican looks much better seeing it on the pencast than the stills on the website. The motion really shows off colors so well. If only it was in my price range. It's a beauty.
    Turkey Hammock, love the pencast!

Funny story: a few years ago when I had just started my rabbit hole journey into fountain pens, I once handed a TWSBI ECO to my supervisor to sign a performance review doc. I had gone first, so it was already uncapped, but he didn't look at what I handed him, so he went and smashed the nib onto the paper like one would a ballpoint. Fortunately, the nib survived - all that happened was a little ink splatter. Now this was in Germany, and upon a second look he recognized the pen as a fountain pen, and then managed to properly sign with it, but he was a bit mystified as to being handed one. Possibly also a bit flustered at almost having damaged it.

Sailor Hokuro dip pens gave me the idea of using my Sailor HighAce Neo pens as dip pens. Calligraphy nibs, clear feed so I can see to clean it, and better for me because the HighAce nibs dry out between uses with a cartridge or converter.

Here’s a question for you. I decided not to re-ink my Pilot 823 after cleaning for once and the barrel still has water drops in it after at least 3 weeks [I lost count]. I’ve tried pumping the vacuum filler to no avail and I’m not about to mess with it further since I don’t dare given I’m not about to void my warranty, especially when I’m not nearly good enough to fiddle off the grid without breaking something. So do I just keep waiting or can I safely put it in my pen case without it becoming a terrarium?

I have a couple pens where the line width is different. Specifically my Pelikan M800’s. I have a EF that writes much wider than the ‘same’ pen in a F nib. I bought these preowned so it could certainly be the fact someone used the EF with a little bit of a hard hand. However,it is a delightful pen regardless.. ❤

I almost didn't get mine because USPS showed delivered but it wasn't on my front porch. Drew, there's a great solution for you. Buy a plastic cereal container. You can then tip the entire bag of cereal into the plastic container. They have a top opening only large enough for cereal to fall at a slower pace and a jug like moulding down the side to help you hold the container. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I'm not sure I could deal with this either. 😮

I haven't read all bazillion comments on this episode but I wanted to talk about accordions.... There are piano accordions, the huge ones with keyboards, then there are smaller "button" accordions that are used in various folk musics like Irish, Cajun, conjunto, etc. Google will show you pictures. Then there are concertinas, which to me seem the most complicated to play. A friend who plays explained to me how the two hands work together in a tune, and it broke my brain.

I listened to your pencast about uncaping the pen yesterday and by coincidence yesterday I got my FIRST fountain pen with a „twist“ cap (a Pelikan 140) 😅 I had only just gotten used to the fact that it’s not a pull to open pen and so I grabbed it immediately and lo and behold, the natural was for me to open the pen seems to be by twisting BOTH, pen and cap simultaneously!! I use all of my fingers and probably look like a spider doing it 😂🙈

I heard that nibs wearing in a way specific to the primary user was a thing before the use of a harder material in the tip, like iridium. Apparently no one uses iridium anymore, but stainless steel is good enough. Now that we have harder tip materials, user specific wear is not a thing any more. So it's possible it may have been a thing in the past (and pertetuated as lore passed down over the decades that never went away) but it's definitely not a thing now.

I have tried Drew’s “only 3 pens inked up” at any one time rule. Not easy to do when you like different nibs sizes and inks for different uses! I keep a Kaweco Sport in my handbag as my pocket pen. (It’s always at the ready, no dry starts even after a week or so and the ink never collects in the cap even if the pen gets jostled.). Then, I keep 2 Pilot Parallels (1.5 nib and 2.4 nib) inked and in my desk for addressing envelopes and writing greeting cards … So that’s 3 pens already inked up. Does that count against the number of pens that I want inked up for general use?!
I shall rest easier knowing that even the “arbitrary rule man” has a few exceptions.
Great pencast! And, Drew’s video on scratchy nibs was terrific. Mary Kerr

Yes, you can absolutely use washi tape to attach poster to the wall! ☺️ I do it all the time but it will depend a bit on the weight of the poster!
Also, there are special strips for posters (german manufacturer is TESA for example, they’re called tesa power strips here 😅) which will not damage the wall but that also depends on how solid your paint is etc. They are quite handy! 😊
