Was in the middle of fighting an Alpha Rex with my own Rex, then BAM! Thylacoloe snatched me off the back. They always strike at the most inopportune times...

My MK14 (14th Tek Rex, fully bred and imprinted) just got off the giga (i was killing a giga) and mashed that thyla that snatched me, then died from giga ._. Rip MK14, time for *_sYsTeM bEhAvIoR uPdAtE_*

What kills me about the thylacoleo is their spawn rate on the island map. The entire early game I can't go under a redwood without being tackled and eaten but as soon as I have some armor that could help me survive that and I'm looking for a thyla to tame they just become extinct

We all knew what was coming too...
The way I tame thylacoleos is that I build a taming pen just outside of redwood forest (not a mobile taming pen) and I go fly around the forest with my Argentavis. After I spot one in a tree, I fly above it, just like you did, but here's the difference. You smack em so they drop down, I just yoink him up with my Argy, and fly away, just like a Pegomastax with a steak. Then I just transport the poor Thyla into my taming pen, no need to kite it, no need for ramps nor anything.
Taming pen is also pretty small, just 2x2 foundations, and 2 high with window frames or door frames. Not sure if thyla can climb normal walls, but he sure didn't climb window frames.. He was also too thick to just walk away from the trap which had only 7 walls for some reason... Once tamed, you can just jump out from the pen, or use argy to pick him out if you don't have a saddle at hand.
Also I had a campfire in the pen to cook all the prime meat I had to hunt while that Thyla was taking a nap. I didn't have kibble, talk about noob taming methods.....
While not specific to creatures, a good 'basics' lesson would be on resource management techniques, specifically, dealing with the transport, storage, and ease-of-access for excessively heavy quantities of resources like stone. Building projects typically require massive amounts of resources, and it can be useful to cover things to consider when moving/storing a hundred stacks of stone or metal without having to do it all by hand a stack or two at a time. It's great that you have ten vaults for metal or stone storage, but it doesn't do you a lot of good if you have to spend hours moving them by hand a few stacks at a time.

Im pretty much crap at this game, but If I'm building something resource intensive I'll bring whatever tames reduce the weight of that item to where I'm building and just stand right between them so I can grab whatever they carry, craft everything I can, and go from there.
Good comments above. If you have multiple stega or doedicuris or beavers ONLY lvl damage(for faster gathering rates) on just one you use to gather and all the others need weight so they can carry more. Just empty your harvester into the carriers and you bring back an amount worth your efforts drop whatever you dont want to bring to make weight for important resources. Best used on tames that reduce the weight of resources. You could just use the fastest heavy weight carrier dino you have as they move faster than a stega but the stega will be following and you will still have to wait on it to catch up any way. If you need to purely move a heavy item to another location use the fastest weighty tames to run them back and forth. Also once level 50 you can make a platform saddle for the paracer and can make a portable base/forge because it is easier, and less weight, to transport crafted items than the resources it takes to make them. Try not to throw many resources away, because you will end up needing nearly everything. Also i believe some things boost stamina which should assist in carriying heavier things in situations. Well thats all the tips i got.
They’ve updated this to where argies cut the weight in half on metal, stone, crystal AND obsidian. So I would recommend an argy now unless you’re gathering wood but even in that case, I gather it fast af with a decent hatchet and my argy. Get the weight to 1,000+ and it’s going to become one of your favorite worker tames. They also made the saddle a smithy now so great for behemoth gates as long as you can hold enough weight on it

I have never found a thylacoleo my whole ark experience i gotten to a high level and never found one in the red woods the only thing i found was terror birds

Wa Yang they don’t spawn on mobile, and some mods can cancel spawns by replacing their id.
I'm feeling so lucky atm. I just found a 150 Thylo and am taming it right now. I just wanted to see if they are useful. I feel like I hit the jackpot.

I know this is an old video but I hope you see this because I’ve made this raft twice and my friend and I were on the beach by the snow mountain where all the raptors, Carnos and t rexes spawn in the west. We used this raft a bit differently though, because instead of taming things we killed 2 rexes and 5 alpha raptors while taming argens by hiding inside from the rexes and trapping the raptors inside and crossbowing them lol. Lots of repairs are needed but it got the job done 10/10 multipurpose taming raft would recommend 👍

Yeah there's no reason to knock them off the tree if you're on an argy, you can grab them right off of the trunk if you come at them from above.
Can argents really grab wild creatures? Tryed a few times but unable to grab them.
@@Elvira27 Depends on size I believe. But yes, taming things like sabers and wolves are easy with an argy and a drop pen.
@@MrDufDaddy He has a video where he picks up a beaver. I tried several times to pick one up that was wild and non aggressive, but it wouldn't work. I'm on an official server for console.

In my opinion the undisputed best mount on The Island map. They have countless benefits making them reliable for almost any task.
Nice tip, when trying to find a thylacoleo, fly on an argentavis and fly to where the leaves are on the red wood trees while holding a sacrificial parasaur on turrent mode to find it.
philinger your videos have been great.. I just recently started playing ARK and they have helped me a lot..
My fiancé and I Love the mobile taming pen. Use it for almost everything and made a perch on it for our argents to land on while taming a Dino. Your videos have been so helpful. But one thing he did different with the mobile pen was putting a stone Dino gate on the side to let your tames out
Finally found a 145 lvl Thyla after a week of looking, got it trapped knocked out just to find I forgot the narco juice. So I spent the whole tame running around picking berries and making narco juice.
And to top it off right near the end the server started the whole "We will be shutting down for maint." messages. fun fun fun :)
Just got a look at the tamed stats: Health 4760, Stam 1920, food 5266, Weight 608 and melee 352 ... looks pretty good to me.
Got my first today in the redwoods of valguero official. Was wanting one for a long time but was working on the kibble. Couple friends from my alliance wanted one so we put our materials together and made the kibble in my cooker. The one buddy who was just helping found the first 2, both below lvl100 so we killed them in Hope's to get respawns. I found a level 140 and killed all aggressive mobs in the area with my allosaurus. I got on a large rock and managed to land maybe 5 headshots with tranqs and a few body shots before it fled. I simply chased with my super fast allos and jumped off to shoot when it stopped or got caught in a rock. It was an easy solo tame with no trap. We got my friend one shortly after, I managed to get it stuck between a rock and my 2 allos making for another easy tame. We found all 4 thylas within half an hour. All were on the ground too, not in trees. I think that's a valguero thing.

For the longest time, I was afraid to tame one of these things. Finally got one on Extinction and it is a blast. Lately, I've downloaded Kraken's Better Dinos mod. I've pretty much been knocking everything out with a fast, punchy scorpion. So much fun!

Protip: As of TLC 3, you can't be dismounted while riding a Stego. You'll move slower than molassess, but Stegos makes Thyla hunting much less dangerous.
A small~ish flock of dimorphs are excellent at clearing an area. Megatheriums are also pretty tanky and add a bug buff and you got plenty of extra tankiness if needed
I love thylas. My favorite land mount. :-) I'm taking a break from Ark until extinction releases, but I'm in the middle of breeding a super thyla.
I was playing the ark was trying to tame a dunkie and a mega pihrana killed me lost all my stuff so I just gave up I was lvl 82
I have found in my travels, that they won't see you right below them. So I would come from the other side of the tree and sneak under him. Then place a semicircles of pillars down and tag him so he drops right inside.

I tamed a level 90 on extinction the other day and even though the level isn't great, cooked mutton tame, I see why you and Syntac love them so much. I went to the desert and tamed up a 135 carno, and three allos, the highest was 90, all in one tripbbn on the back of it.
Got me a lvl 95 the other day too. Hunting for maybe 6 hours total with 2 server dino wipes lol and that's the biggest I could capture. Love it though even lower level
Absolutely the best intro into an ark video I have ever seen. Completely shows everyone's Redwoods entrances🤣 Also you could just have a tanky bird and carry the thyla to a nearby taming pen. I have found that if you grab them off the tree they dont attack too much. Just recently subbed, but your content is amazing.
Just started playing a public server last week, thnx to ur guides I've tamed my 1st thylacoleo ever solo! He only tamed up to lv75 but he's bright green n won the HP loto lol thanks again Phlinger !!

I've been searching the redwood forest high and low, tearing my way through countless trees, and there's not a thylacoleo to be found anywhere.

Are any of you playing modded, some mods cancel mob spawns with ID replacement.
Try a dino wipe. Sometimes not enough spawn bc the server creature spawns are all used up
I never search for one, but they sure love me and will hug me until I'm dead. because they come to me, I got to tame 2 of them! luckily for me, it's male and female so Imma make more on my base lmao 😂
I like Thylas because not only they are cool and are good for breeding, they are the equivalent of a flying mount in traveling and utility.

A wild lvl 115 female, and a wild lvl 125 male! Tamed both with a mix of raw/cooked prime meat.
They're level 190 and level 200 right now, are they worth breeding yet???

Yeah, first time I tried to find one of those to tame, it found me first... ended similarly to yours, but I'd been on an argie, so the argie ate the thyla.

Is a baryonyx a good choice to use when taking? My thought was to lure it to the water, then spin on it to keep it from killing my baryonx.

I find it easier to have an argent with good health leave one pounce on you make sure he’s passive and just shoot him with tranq darts
My favorite ground mount currently is the Dire Bear. I have one that's lvl 245 and I use it to face tank things I want to tame. His name is Balu. He's a total savage. Thyla's are great too. I just need to get me a high lvl one. Mines only lvl 107.
You forgot to mention that you can park thylas on walls or cliffs and leave them there. Also, you didn’t mention the pounce ability. Great vid, though!

I just tamed my first, super easy with an argy and drop pen. But an odd thing happened, I put raw prime in with prime jerky and she ate the jerky. I've never had a carnovaur do that.

@@yeggstuh4389 keep at it. I built a camp right by the river (solo) at the redwood forest, and honestly I don't see many. What's even harder is most of the time they are in the trees.
You could try taking a Parasaur into the woods and use their ping ability to see if anything pings in the trees.

Edit: I’ll use my argy to carry a parasaur while it’s on turret mode and see if that’ll work
Why aren't they spawning on my map. I have only found 3 and had to kill all but one. It seems they won't spawn on my map. Any advice
Steven Johnson Just go on a killing spree in the Redwoods. Murder everything then come back after respawns. Don’t just kill Thyla’s cause they can respawn in place of other Dino’s killed also.

what i like to do is gather 4 thatch foundations before hand and idk like 12 that door frames souround it some will be 2 tall
"winging it off the fly" and get 2 ramps on one of the 1 high walls and have that ready as soon as you find the thylo agro it he will jump down and attack you and just run up into the trap as soon as he lets you go and then shoot it, boom uve got a 168 thylo (:

I'm new to this game and finally tamed a flying creature then was going to one of mountains to explore and I had to regain stamina and it hit night time then I got grabbed not knowing what happened, came to youtube seeing if it was a flying creature that catched me ,but no it was a crazy tiger that pounces from trees ,that was the day this game made me traumatized about redwoods
That’s exactly what happened to me but I went to the volcano to get a argie and died every time to these .I reset the game and got it eventually
I tamed 3 argies now and sabertooth I'm pretty proud of myself, I might make a taming pen for thycoleo but trying to tame rex

I was playing ark one day and I was at the adage of redwoods about to cross the river and I was talking to my friend and it just crossed my mind that I had never been jumped by a Thyla and as soon as I told my friend that one pounced me from a tree.
If you fly over it with a big flyer like a wyvern or quetz it will pounce at you but hit the wyvern or quetz and bounce off
Can you use honey to lure them off of the tree? Just wondering b/c most flyers on the island you can't shoot off of. All of them except the quetzal I think. The parasaur is a good tactic but having to land to shoot them out of the trees makes them not last very long for me lol.

It was today when one of these merked me for the first time. Im flying through the redwoods on a PT about mid level to the trees and im thinking about watching other people get snatched and how it wont happen to me... about 5 seconds later a lvl 140 hits me from the top rope and puts me in the dirt
I have a level 30 Thyla and took on an alpha raptor and barely killed it.... then I saw the alpha was level 100 and now I love thylas!

Would you recommend starting at a low difficulty then getting some tames then increasing it to get higher level spawns or just start at a higher difficulty?
I would also like to know. My server dinos don't get anywhere near that high and it confuses me. I'm sure I have the default settings
No, play on maximum difficulty right off the bat. Everything is scary until you get a nice level dino. I would say a level 200 raptor would make your hunting and traveling so much easier. I used mine to face tank a level 100 stego, then lured argents into traps and all. Don’t be scared of max. difficulty it only seems that way.

That's incorrect, you can tame titanboas. It's not a standard tranq+feed though, it's a kind of passive tame. You have to drop eggs on the ground near them and have them eat them. It's tricky because if they are aggroing something they won't eat, so generally the plan is to build a taming pan and then drop eggs into the pen from high enough up that they don't aggro you. Bigger and better eggs tame them faster.
The max tame is supposed to be 120 on my server. I haven’t found one over lvl 40 I need help

Thylas are a bit too powerful in my opinion, for an arboreal marsupial (even though there was a bigger relative that ARK's thyla is partly based on).
I think they should swap stats with the sabertooth but keep their climbing behviour/ability.
That ought'a stop y'all having so much fun.
There's always ARK 2 (until it's released anyway).
OR sabertooths could have a stealth crouch ability that you works the same way as a ghilli suit. The sabertooth could pownce once it is close enough or you could use mounted weapons like bolas!

Just a little question, why does my thyla keep running off when i get attacked plus she will get attacked and do absolutly nothing. I used to love thyla actualy my fav ground mount now i hate thylas cant stand them as this happends everytime and now iv lost all my stuff i had and cant get it back
