During World War II, German forces used the fortress for ammunition storage. On June 5, 1941, the ammunition exploded, blasting through the entirety of Smederevo and reaching settlements as far as 10 kilometers away. Much of the southern wall of the fortress was destroyed, the nearby railway station, packed with people, was blown away, and most of the buildings in the city were turned into debris. Around 2,500 people died in the explosion, and every other inhabitant was injured or wounded(approximately 5,500). Bombing by the Allies in 1944 caused further damage
Great video as usual, and a lesson for people from Belgrade: Smederevo is about an hour away from you. You can take city bus from Ustanička street to Grocka then bus to the center of Smederevo and be there in less then an hour for about 200 dinars. For about 10 euros you can have a bus fare, two or three drinks and some light snack in lovely Smederevo, town which is probably bigger than you think, with really long pedestrian zone. As these two charming young people have said, great city break. Molly and Matt, you seem like nice people, your videos are very enjoyable, you know how to enjoy even ordinary things, and that is a key to live a quality life. Will watch you even when you leave Serbia, I wish you safe and enjoyable travel and hope you come back to Serbia to make more videos. Cheers!
Dears, thank you so much for presenting Serbia in such a beautiful light! It is one amazing country, and there is always something new to explore, see, taste, hear, feel. I've moved 10 years ago to the Netherlands, but it is my home, and Belgrade is still in my soul. Thank you once again! Love long and prosper!
Thank God Serbia is not in the EU. We flew here from Chile to avoid the ten day hotel quarantine at Heathrow. All EU countries were not accessible but you can transit an EU airport to get to a non EU country. We saw only a handful of places during the fortnight we were there. Belgrade-Novi Sad-Subotica-Sombor-Belgrade. We wanted to go to Smederevo on one of the last days we were in Belgrade but the weather was awful both days. Say. If you are ever in Belgrade again it's worth hiring a bike to cycle to either Zemun or along the banks of the Sava. Thank you loads to Serbia which let us in with only a 48hr PCR test.We will be again back as we only explored the northern tip of this country. So much more to see.
Great video. Love the drone stuff. Been following yall for a few weeks now... think we might jump over to Serbia when we are done our Albania trip :). Good work safe travels
My hometown ❤️ I am so glad that you visited it. Too pity that you missed next weekend because there is going to be a nice medieval fair with, music, knights, Princess...
And the part of the fortress where you paid for the entrance is known as a small town, and it served as a Royal Palace. Also in Smederevo there is a local brewery "Crow" in some of the bars you can find their beers, besides the beer there is wine park where you find great local wines and rakijas, just a little hints for your viewers 🙂
Thank you and Bon Voyage; I think you are a real cool couple and hope you'll retire in Serbia some day! And also thank you for allowing us to live vicariously in Serbia through your eyes - it was an immense pleasure! All best!
If you stayed longer in Belgrade, you could go on a four day river cruise Belgrade - Kladovo down the Danube. It would be unforgettable trip and you would see Ram and Golubac fortresses, the magnificient Danube river itself (6km at its widest), equally mangificient Djerdap gorge, some of Romanian river side (an important monument in the cliff), Rajacke pimnice, Vratne prerasti, huge Djerdap dam, the remnants of the Roman bridge across the Danube that was the longest in Europe for thousand years. The return trip is by bus and you would visit Lepenski vir museum (the remnants of the oldest settlement in Europe) and Viminacium museum (Roman city). (Now I see you are mentioning it ...)
You two were amazing company! I feel sad that you are leaving Serbia but I am so happy to see you had great time in my country. You are most welcome to come back soon I am sure there is plenty of people here who agree with me and who would like to suggest more fantastic places you had no chance to see now. Bless you guys looking forward to see your next destination. And yes next time you have to visit Serbia from June to October
There is speedrunning in gaming. And then there are the two of you speedrunning the Serbia itself! Marvelous. : ) Congrats, I haven't seen anyone doing this before and persist with the consistency of top quality videos without losing the optimism & quirkiness. You def raised the bar for new tourists/vlogers.
Thank you for a nice presentation of Serbia. We want you to come back again, but maybe in summer or autumn.Serbia is a country of beautiful nature with a long history and hospitable people.Thank you and lot of success in your future travels.Greetings from Canada.

You guys are awesome and your videos are amazing! I am using them to show my "Canadian" kids where do we come from. I am sorry that you have to leave and I wish you safe travels. God bless you.
Most beautiful fortress in Serbia ,besides Golubac is Manasija fortress...Those two plus Kopaonik mountain and Vrsac city, Kraljevo city area and one one or two spa towns like Vrnjacka or Banja Koviljaca or Soko Banja and we would able to say that you covered whole Serbia Of course there is a lot lot more but i mean main sites...You did a great job ...Only thing ,it's a shame that you traveled so much across Serbia but missed two of 5 top tourist destinations in Serbia : Golubac and Kopaonik
If a fortress tower looks "new", it is because it has been renovated, not because it really is new - it is still five centuries old. And, it's been renovated because it was probably leaning and prone to falling down.
Smederevo Fortress is the greatest river-levelled fortress in Europe, severely damaged in WWII explosion. Concerts mentioned are actually recreations of genuine medieval performance.
I see that planty Serbians already wrote here in comments a lot of things about Smederevo and fortress. But I didn't see some facts so here we go: There is a legend that the tower on video 5:13 had a secret escape plan, it goes all the way under the river to the other side of the shore. Also, in some parts of the fortres, the one on 6:30, during the WW 2, soldiers were hiding some weapons and bombs in ground, so there are still maybe some there left. People are not touching them because they still can be activated ( not sure, just rumors from history teachers) Also, the wife of Djuradj Brankovic, Jerina, made people to build the fortres. Stones were from Greece! Also she made a Golubac fortres. There are also a loot of things about our history on internet. Thank you for an amazing video of my city 😊
HEY GUYS ARE YOU PLANNING TO COME BACK TO SERBIA...BUT IN LATE SPRING OR SUMMER...COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COUNTRY...ALSO TO CHECK OUT THINGS AND PLACES YOU MISSED.THERE ARE QUITE A FEW...I WANT REAL ANSWER, NOT COURTESY ONE 😂😂😂 BYE...ENJOY YOUR TRAVELLING 🙂

On one of the towers there is sign that says "To Christ God, the faithful despot Djuradj, ruler of Serbs and the Zeta shore, by his will this city was erected in year 6938 (1430 AD)". The year of the built was the biggest mystery, not any anymore.
Smederevo was the capital city in the 15th century, in the rule of the Serbian despot Djuradj Brankovic. but Kruševac was in the XIV century, in time of the Battle of Kosovo, in the rule of the famous Prince Lazar. Smederevo Fortress was the largest plain fortress in Europe.
