    Christmas in Serbia is Jan 7th and the 'Serbian New Year' on Jan 14th is also celebrated with Epiphany and St. John the Baptist Slava day close behind. By and large, the winter holiday season is considered finished on Saint Sava day which is I believe the 27th.

    Chop salad is a traditional dish of Balkan (mainly Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian and Turkish) cuisine.
    Shop salad was named after the Shops, who lived in the territory of western Bulgaria, southeastern Serbia and North Macedonia.[1] The salad consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, raw or roasted peppers, onions, parsley, salt, lemon juice or vinegar, oil and fatty salty cheese. Similar to it is Serbian salad, which omits cheese.

    Yes you guess right, Bucko Pizza has become popular as drunk snack during crazy party nights, nothing really special, ordinary street pizza, but they are the first who started putting the toping, that was originally dressing for hot sandwiches in Belgrade, on top and started a trend that is now more then 30 years old.

    • @wherearewe-yt
      @wherearewe-yt  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hahaha. Knew it. Before we went there, I watched a Serbian RUclips video to try and figure out the proper pronunciation of Bucko. They were comparing Bucko, with Poncho pizza in Belgrade. We liked it much more than we thought we would. We would have liked to try another place, but we ran out of time. On a sandwich also sounds great!

    • @ipcipc7760
      @ipcipc7760 11 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, sandwich and pizza street places were very popular at late 80’s and beginning of 90’s as street food. Sandwiches similar to one you have in North America, subway type, with different ingredients and with salads dressing as extra. Urban legend is that some drunk dudes asked for pizza to be topped with salad dressing in the early morning hours and that people then started asking for that more and more, and word come out that in Bucko they are gonna put on top of pizza if you ask for it and that keeps Bucko working for all this years, cause sandwich/pizza places are closing and opening fast and frequently, but since they are OG, they are working all this years.
      Hope you had good time in Serbia, and come again on summer.

It was actually much better than we expected! We wanted to go back again before we left Belgrade, but just couldn't find the time.
      Gibanica was hard to track down! I found the same place you guys went to, but then we ended up finding it on the menu of the restaurant we went to for our first impressions video - so we decided to just tick it off then. Lots of European students study English (especially the younger generation) - but the level of English spoken in Seria was quite high in comparison to some other places we've been. We used to live in Spain, and given that it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, the level of English is surprisingly low. It was much easier for us to learn some Spanish and communicate that way.
      As I'm sure you heard, we struggled with most words in Serbian - so it was a nice surprise that we could communicate so easily in English! There's was only one instance where there was an issue - but you can see that in the Novi Sas video coming up. 😅

    Everyone's welcome in Serbia if you bring good will. Glad you liked your time spent here, it's my native city and there's much more to see and taste here in Belgrade as well as alot more in the other cities. Takes time though so do come visit our neck of the woods again and enjoy your stay. 🙂

      Thanks! We had only four days in Belgrade, and then a few days split between Novi Sad and Subotica. It wasn't enough! We do have four more videos coming, so stick around. We will likely come back to Serbia to explore more (but in nicer weather).

    Sopska isn't Bulgarian. It's a salad by Sop people which live on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria. Salad is popular in both countries.

      Bulgarians certainly consider it Bulgarian. It's one of their national dishes - and we have read stories stating that it was made to represent the colors of the Bulgarin flag.
      Many Serbians consider it Serbian, as we have seen from the comments. Personally, we don't care where it's from. It's delicious either way. 😃

    “Gorki list” that you have tasted is actually “Bitter Leaf” when translated, so yeah, expected to be exactly that 😂 Its a mix of several herbs which gives him the unique, bitter taste. It’s also quite healthy, when consumed properly. 😅 Glad you enjoyed your stay in Serbia, it’s a super welcoming country with great food, traditions and people in general.

    Vruca rakija is not very common to drink during the day. It is small percent of alcohol but since it is boiled with sugar it is spiked. So strong! Kuvano vino is good when you have a cold. Enjoy Serbia. It is very good place (all Balkan in fact). So many good places to visit.

    Going through your Serbian videos tonight. Belgrade is a cool looking city. Nice architecture, great looking food and I loved the cathedral. You kept mentioning Kajmak (Kaymak in Turkey) cheese, so I had to look it up. It's made by boiling unpasteurized milk repeatedly and skimming off the fats that come to the top. Add salt to each layer. Spruce Eats had a cheat recipe you might be interested in trying. One part Bulgarian/Greek feta, sieved, two parts cream cheese, two parts sour cream. I'm going to try it. Hi from Oregon!
