“Gorki list” that you have tasted is actually “Bitter Leaf” when translated, so yeah, expected to be exactly that 😂 Its a mix of several herbs which gives him the unique, bitter taste. It’s also quite healthy, when consumed properly. 😅 Glad you enjoyed your stay in Serbia, it’s a super welcoming country with great food, traditions and people in general.

I know we are tourists ourselves, but we often tend to enjoy places that may not be as "popular" of tourist destinations as others. Over tourism tends to spoil many capital cities. Belgrade didn't feel that way at all. At the same time, we felt very welcomed in Serbia while we were there. Not being on the radar just makes it that much sweeter when you visit a place you don't know much about, and it ends up being a gem.
Anja is actually German! The Pelinkovac is much more bitter, but it does has a similar herby taste. I (Brandon) prefer harder liquors like whisky or rakija, for sure. 😁🥃
You chose all the nice places to visit! Bucko took me down a memory lane - in Belgrade it's considered a cheap but very caloric meal, which is why it is all-time popular among students and clubbers (I remember 20-something-old myself waiting in the endless line at 3.30 AM to get two pieces). And they say Pelinkovac is an acquired taste, it's more popular among 50+ years old folks :D glad you had fun! Plus, you also chose the best time of the year to come, because the summer here is unbearable (40+ degrees).
We actually loved Bucko. Hahaha. Totally unexpected! We thought the "salad" would be too much, but it was SO GOOD. We regret not trying two, but we were filming a good video at the same time (you should check it out if you haven't seen it). Everyone told us to try the Pelinkovac with Coca-Cola or Pepsi. I can imagine that would make it more tolerable. 😅 We had a great time! The weather was quite nice. I (Brandon) am from Canada, so even though it was winter, it was nothing compared to what I grew up with..🥶
@@wherearewe-yt yeah, the pizza itself is not worth much without the "salad" (I also always thought it's funny it's called salad because it's clearly a topping and way too greasy). And two pieces would be an overkill if you have a job to do, it only works if you're completely wasted (or young and have a super-fast metabolism). Yeah, Pelinkovac can be toned down a bit if combined with some sweeter drink, otherwise it tastes like medicine. Same as rakija, Pelinkovac has a long tradition of being used in medical purposes. As for the winters, we really don't have them anymore. This February we had 15-18°C, which is really hot for that time of the year. Although I wouldn't like to experience Canadian winter (it's famously harsh), it's still a pity the climate has changed so insanely.
Thanks for watching! We loved our time in Serbia. We just posted our food tour, only two hours ago. Check it out, and let us know if we missed any of your favorites. We have three more videos coming as well, and will likely be coming back..so if you have any suggestions, let us know. 😉
We walked everywhere during this trip, so we stuck mostly to the center this time around. We only really had time for main attractions this time. If we come back, we will have to venture out further. Thanks for watching!
Pelinkovac is a bitter plant, and added to rakija makes a special drink. There are other berries or roots added to rakija, because rakija in Serbia is a universal MEDICINE 😁
Hvala! We really enjoyed it. We visited a few other cities (Novi Sad and Subotica) so we have a few more videos coming up. I think we'll be back in a few months so visit the south and to eat more Burek, haha 😂

Welcome to Serbia dear friends! I hope you will visit us again.
Pelinkovac you should drink ice cold it tastes better and on top of that it's made from all these healthy plants that's why it's bitter. Šopska salad is usually eaten with main dishes as a compliment to a meal.
I just noticed someone else comment the same thing. Haha. Next time we will try with ice, and also mixed with coke. Those were by far the most common recommendations.
Serbia, as other orthodox part of the world, celebrate Christmas on 1-7 and new year is celebrate 1/14. That’s why all Christmas decoration are still there in January

@@wherearewe-yt ,,...when the army returns to Kosovo''. Our country has problems with terrorism in the southern province of Kosovo for a long time. The Albanian national minority in Serbia, with the support of the entire West (EU/NATO, USA), has been violently trying to take away history and part of our territory. Those are some other topics that you don't need to deal with, I just wanted to point out that I'm glad because that graffiti also fell into the frame of your video. You two are very brave travellers to be travelling around different countries in winter! I guess, there are no crowds and no competition when visiting popular places. Only problem is that winter time is when places are often closed for annual cleaning or renovations.
I (Brandon) am from Canada, so the winters in most of Europe are quite pleasant compared to what I grew up with (up to -30C, and worse with the wind). As you read, it can also be quite empty, which is great! We went to Athens in the winter one year, and it was great. Had all the main attractions mostly to ourselves! Haha.
@@wherearewe-yt Oddly enough, some Canadian family just moved to Russia and they said that they are not bothered by Russian winter at all. On other hand an Australian family is trying to build a temporary house in Altai, Siberia and their latest video has them bravely trying to clear snow from their house site in what seems to be a blizzard. Very uncomfortable conditions. Perhaps it would not bother you but I would have stayed indoors.
I am laughing so hard at your experience with rakia. I had never heard of it and when I finally visited my roots in Bulgaria, it was so strong. I think this must mean moonshine? I heard the word rakija and instantly thought "Oh no".
We tried it in our food tour as well, and that one was so strong, it made me (Brandon) pull a jaw muscle when I tried it. That reaction is in the intro to that video. 😂 It DEFINITELY varies greatly in alcohol percentage. Some were quite nice, while others could strip paint off of a car.
The bar itself is called Kultura. That second clip was the menu I filmed inside, which said "Koktel Karta"! Haha. Thanks so much for watching. We still have four more videos coming, so don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already. 😃
Serbia has many different brandies aged with medicinal herbs cured inside the bottle. 'Pelinkovac' being one of those and 'Travarica' being another. Supposedly each medicinal herb has healing properties in helping with various ailments. Those herbs are mostly harvested on high mountains in Serbia. There a few more "medicinal brandies" on the market there but I left Yugo decades ago and forgot most of it.
South of Belgrade, I recommend the fortresses of Golubac, Ram, Smederevo and Niš. Go see Drvengrad built by Kusturica as well as Oplenac. Good discoveries.
Hahaha. It's all good! No matter where we go, there will always be someone who gets angry about something we do or say. In the UK someone got mad at how Anja holds her cutlery. 😂 Thanks so much for commenting and watching. We appreciate it! 😃
@peka: dont worry, most countries have over-enthusiastic ppl - and with some reflection everyone could know that and not generalize (as long there are not 99% haters;) ... and actually, from a more neutral point of view, attacking and blaming someone for not knowing something is a good way to make sure information is memorized - as long one gets not inflationary blamed for everything. the right balance is key here! ;)

You two made my day. We Serbs love it when our guests come and they are satisfied. We have more history than such a small space can handle. Perhaps the best way to get to know ours is through food. I wish you a pleasant stay in Serbia.
Hvala! Glad you enjoyed. We had an amazing time.
Thanks for your visit :)

Hahaha. Yes, it was quite bitter. Much more than we had anticipated. We had a great time in Serbia, and have a lot more videos (and a lot more food) to come. New food video is actually out tomorrow!

We love when we not on radar
I know we are tourists ourselves, but we often tend to enjoy places that may not be as "popular" of tourist destinations as others. Over tourism tends to spoil many capital cities. Belgrade didn't feel that way at all. At the same time, we felt very welcomed in Serbia while we were there.
Not being on the radar just makes it that much sweeter when you visit a place you don't know much about, and it ends up being a gem.

Hello and welcome to Serbia..pelinkovac that you've tried is actually similar to german jegermaister. It's a alcoholic herb liquor 😊😊
Anja is actually German! The Pelinkovac is much more bitter, but it does has a similar herby taste. I (Brandon) prefer harder liquors like whisky or rakija, for sure. 😁🥃
Hi Serbian here, just want to say that if you want to come here again come in spring or autumn, and I am subscribed to your channel for some time.❤
Thanks so much for watching! We will definitely come back some day.
We had a great time!
Thank you for nice words about our country! Come again! You are very welcome!
Thanks for watching! We loved our time in Serbia. We just posted our food tour, only two hours ago. Check it out, and let us know if we missed any of your favorites.

All strict center, locals rarely go to this palces......but for the first time, it's not bad. Greetings from Belgrade.

Pelinkovac is a bitter plant, and added to rakija makes a special drink. There are other berries or roots added to rakija, because rakija in Serbia is a universal MEDICINE 😁

@@wherearewe-yt ,,...when the army returns to Kosovo''. Our country has problems with terrorism in the southern province of Kosovo for a long time.
It DEFINITELY varies greatly in alcohol percentage. Some were quite nice, while others could strip paint off of a car.

Maybe we will have to try Travarica next time - though I'd much rather have rakija, to be honest. The bitter taste was so strong with Pelinkovac!

@peka: dont worry, most countries have over-enthusiastic ppl - and with some reflection everyone could know that and not generalize (as long there are not 99% haters;) ... and actually, from a more neutral point of view, attacking and blaming someone for not knowing something is a good way to make sure information is memorized - as long one gets not inflationary blamed for everything. the right balance is key here! ;)
