I love Tom. That’s all I think whenever he posts. No one else is so committed to this combination of truth, details, humor and topic diversity. He’s just so cool.
5:45 Mistake in the correction, too. *Turbines do not spin thousands of times per minute.* That, too, would be incredibly fast. The correct time frame to reach thousands is a full hour.
The turbines in a thermal power plant (like coal) for spin thousands of times per minute. A wind turbine does not, but he was talking about thermal ones.
In a steam or gas turbine driven alternator in a modern power station the rotor runs at precisely 3000 rpm in a grid providing 50 Hz power, or 3600 rpm in 60 Hz systems. The rotational speed is derived from the number of poles in the alternator and the power frequency. So yes, it does rotate a thousands of revolutions per minute.
It will be a sad day when Tom posts his last regular Monday video. But he's earned a hell of a break plus it's not like he doesn't have several other (thankfully metaphorical) plates spinning. Do as he says and watch/listen to Lateral. It's one of my favorite podcasts and it's always a welcome sight to see a new episode in my list. Thanks for all the videos Tom and I look forward to any little bits that you release in whatever forms they may take!
Massive props to you Tom, not a lot of people are willing to correct their mistakes, and fewer are willing to make a video reflecting on all the ones they've made. Great work as always!
Tom Scott has a bio that says "These are some of the things I've made and done. They'll probably come back to haunt me in a few years' time." I guess now is the time they're back to haunt him. What a nice closing arc for the series.
9:29 I know you aren't counting mispronunciations but I just had to be that guy. Geelong is pronounced juh-long, as Australians love to reduce the amount of effort used to articulate their sentences as much as physically possible for some reason. (possibly the most miniscule error ever but I was searching for one for irony's sake and Tom is really good at this)
Just a reminder: never ever feel bad for making a mistake. I know we all learn this in school, but it's a human thing, just be honest about it. Without any mistakes, you won't learn as much.
Wether it's school or work: you learn by making mistakes./ Just recently I made a somewhat huge mistake with very little impact (thankfully). I owned up to it and I learned from it big time. By all means, make (non-lethal, supervised) mistakes.
Thanks for teaching everyone that mistakes are ok so long as we acknowledge them and try to improve. It's scary walking up to the board when you think you have to be perfect...less so when being human is allowed. And thanks for sharing your time with us all these years.
This is definitely going to be one of those things where the end version has multiple iterations still, correcting over itself again and again. - Final - Final V2 - Final Last - Final Final - Last Final v2 - Last Final v3 - Maybe not the last final version.
I am going to miss the guarantee of a Tom video every Monday but I am still grateful for everything you have made and everything to come; enjoy being able to take a proper break Tom!
Tom, you have been more integral and honest than even some of the role models I have had growing up. Integrity like yours is increasingly valuable in this world. Your fan base appreciates you!
Awesome video, but just as awesome were the people digging up muck behind Tom. I loved their dialogue (in my head) about "great muck over here" and "a watery tart lobbing swords about is no basis for a system of government!"
As a German I thought "Schutzwaffen" would mean weapons Swiss people use for self-defense or defending their country, seeing that many Swiss people have guns at home.
@@Pfooh I am wondering if this has something to do with where Tom's Germans are actually from and what type of accent they are used to hearing. I am from Austria and I definitley heard the man say 'Schusswaffen' and not 'Schutzwaffen'. I would also like to note that 'Schutzwaffen' usually refers to passive weapons like armour rather than active weaponry like firearms used for defensive purposes.
A man like this, who spreads colossal amounts of knowledge but still has the ability to admit when he is wrong and keep learning deserves absolute respect and should serve as an example to all future generations.
@@wawacat6568 I'm sure there's a city somewhere that is pronounced the way he said it and so he messed up the truth by referring to a different city instead :P
Haha I was like ‘oh no, poor Geelong’ :-P that being said across the universe of RUclipsrs talking about Australia, I feel like Melbourne and Brisbane seem to have the most unique pronunciations. That being said, someone from Sydney once asked me where Mordialloc was, and they pronounced it More-die-allock, and I was like… sorry where?
I have played Civilization 1 when it originally came out. When playing the version which came on floppy disks and had "copy protection" that required you to answer questions from the manual to keep playing; Gandhi would threaten you with nuclear weapons. When playing later versions of the same game, such as from the Sid Meier's collection on CD, he didn't. Rather than a collective, international false memory; I think we are talking about a simple post-release bug fix.
See, this is why you're awesome and trustworthy! Everyone makes mistakes and gets things wrong, but you never intentionally mislead and when you do make mistakes you own up to them with openness and humility which is the best anyone can do.

One of my favorite things about Tom Scott videos is the whole “one take” lecture mantra. Much appreciate the higher attention span aspect of the videos.
Great video, Tom! And, yes, there's a mistake in this one too, related to the toasters: Resistors aren't charged by capacitors, capaciors are charged by resistors.
Resistors are meant to limit current, right? I'd say capacitors are charged by an electrical power source and the resistor is there to make sure the capacitor can't charge past its limit?
The irony in that you've made a mistake in the video title at 8:30! It's still the video title from Fetch-Execute Cycle! In seriousness: Great work, Tom, I don't think *anyone* else on the platform would put quite this much effort into correcting themselves.
This was really super cool and helpful. I wish more RUclips educators did yearly or monthly videos to update information because I feel like I’d forever go on knowing the wrong things to be facts and I’d rather know the right things.

I'd disagree slightly. Correctly pronounced it's Jee-LONG. Still a "long e", but the stress placed on the second syllable. Of course, in common speech the 'e' is eventually abbreviated to non-existence, hence 'j-LONG', or 'juh-LONG' if you then slow it back down.

Tom Scott not only owns up to his mistakes but makes an entire video to highlight that they even happened. And to top it off it's entertaining to watch! This man is an absolute legend 👌
So glad to see that intellectual honesty isn't dead on youtube! Thank you for striving to be factually correct, if only more youtubers were like this!
I also puzzled over this statement. 😅
The turbines in a thermal power plant (like coal) for spin thousands of times per minute. A wind turbine does not, but he was talking about thermal ones.
Also the blades aren't made of steel heh
I think Tom intentially left it here as a home exercise!
Totally love that the ad break for youtube ads kicks at 08:42 just after Clarkson says, "time for a break". Perfect timing 😂
Same for me 😅
recommend revanced and uBlock Origin
Creators can insert ad breaks so they land somewhere convenient btw
@@NazuikoThey still can? I thought RUclips ads rules has many changes
@@Nazuiko Which is why I was complimenting Tom on his timing...
Lateral is what I listen to on Saturdays as I cook lunch :)
Very enjoyable!
I’m hoping for more technical difficulties videos
@@philash824 Totally! I hope there's more Tech Diff. I really like the "two of us are lying" format.
Agreed! Lateral is my favourite podcast. I'm so glad Tom said it's not stopping at the moment.
Let’s just hope Tom didn’t mistakenly forget to include every single mistake he’s made since 2014.
I was about to say, this video surely introduced a new mistake if it assumes that all mistakes have been caught. There's always something!
that’s why toms the best, he does his research and when he’s wrong he admits it
9:29 I know you aren't counting mispronunciations but I just had to be that guy. Geelong is pronounced juh-long, as Australians love to reduce the amount of effort used to articulate their sentences as much as physically possible for some reason. (possibly the most miniscule error ever but I was searching for one for irony's sake and Tom is really good at this)
I think we reduce the amount of effort in articulation to keep the flies out of our mouths.... just a theory. ;)
I read this comment close to when this was in the video. Huh.
Don’t worry Tom. Lots of things in the world went horribly wrong in 2016
I know right?? People forget 2016, it was a hell of a year
You're talking about Leicester City winning the Premier League right?
Oh so it really wasn't just my life that went downhill back then
Chicago Cubs won the World Series.
Ireland beat the All Blacks in Rugby (in Chicago, no less).
Wait ... what went so horribly wrong in 2016?
Just a reminder: never ever feel bad for making a mistake. I know we all learn this in school, but it's a human thing, just be honest about it. Without any mistakes, you won't learn as much.
Jein. Be honest about it for sure. But for some mistakes one should feel bad.
We used to learn that in school but these days they seem to reward failure with praise in schools, so I'm not so sure.
Yes but to express the mistakes you made and the associated feelings is a healthy way to self reflect
@@Thurgosh_OG hang around schools a lot still, do you?
Wether it's school or work: you learn by making mistakes./ Just recently I made a somewhat huge mistake with very little impact (thankfully). I owned up to it and I learned from it big time. By all means, make (non-lethal, supervised) mistakes.
You may have hated to write this script, but I admired your honesty and humbleness! This video is truly inspiring!
Thanks for teaching everyone that mistakes are ok so long as we acknowledge them and try to improve. It's scary walking up to the board when you think you have to be perfect...less so when being human is allowed.
And thanks for sharing your time with us all these years.
Your dedication to accuracy and humility and public learning is a model for us all. Thank you!
"you should never attribute to malice, what can be adequately explained by stupidity" 10:52 🙂 Nice one!
I agree. Great quote.
This is definitely going to be one of those things where the end version has multiple iterations still, correcting over itself again and again.

It is incredible Tom's ongoing maintenance of integrity. He even has his fact checkers looking for mistakes during this very video at @9:02.
Funny thing: watching this, I thought I recognized the trams and the bridge in the background- turns out this was filmed in Warsaw!!
Came to see if anyone else has noticed that as well!
I recognized it too
Awesome video, but just as awesome were the people digging up muck behind Tom.
It would, that's what the translator thought as well. But he said 'Schusswaffen'.
@@Pfooh Oh, I see. Sorry.
Swiss German has to be the weirdest European language/dialect. It sound like a Dutchie speaking German.
@@rogink Didn't know Dutchie has another meaning also. I always thought it only refers to... umm... something recreational.
As an Aussie, hearing Tom say GEE-long rather than Gee-LONG just makes me laugh and i have no idea why
Thanks I wanted to tag that too
Oh same😂 I even live near there! It's more like g-long 😅 (with a soft g like in Geordie)
@@darqebri2887 I'd write pronunciation as "Je-long"
This unforgivable error requires a separate video! 😂
It's not far from "Mel-born."
A man like this, who spreads colossal amounts of knowledge but still has the ability to admit when he is wrong and keep learning deserves absolute respect and should serve as an example to all future generations.
The way he said Geelong made me physically shudder.
(For anyone wondering, it's usually pronounced, at least by people who live there, as "juh-long".)
Guess we found this video's mistake
@@PoleTooke well that's a pronounciation-mistake tho, it's technically still true
@@wawacat6568 I'm sure there's a city somewhere that is pronounced the way he said it and so he messed up the truth by referring to a different city instead :P
I felt exactly the same way 🤢 Geeeeeelong
Haha I was like ‘oh no, poor Geelong’ :-P that being said across the universe of RUclipsrs talking about Australia, I feel like Melbourne and Brisbane seem to have the most unique pronunciations.
That being said, someone from Sydney once asked me where Mordialloc was, and they pronounced it More-die-allock, and I was like… sorry where?
Putting the RUclips ads at 8:43 actually made me laugh.
I seem to recall it being a thing too and I used to play on Macs (at least I think it was Macs) from some pirated copy probably.
People Make Games have a video about Nuclear Gandhi. Worth checking out.
See, this is why you're awesome and trustworthy!
Everyone makes mistakes and gets things wrong, but you never intentionally mislead and when you do make mistakes you own up to them with openness and humility which is the best anyone can do.
Tom you are the epitome of RUclips. Thank you for these years. Thank you for this. Thank you for feeding my curiosity for years.
Truly, thank you
Not long until the end. Well deserved break, but will be missed in our feeds 😢
Tom, did you intentionally mark the break for ads at the exact time he said "And now, it's time for a break"? That was very funny!
If in 9 years of dozens and dozens of videos you only made this much mistakes, then you've done an excellent job!
There's also the *same* ad break in the referenced video, iirc
I also received an ad at this point too haha
Thats amazing ahah
i got an ad too
It could be that RUclips scans every video for people saying things like that…? Or Tom designated the ad space when he uploaded it. Not sure.
I both love and hate that an ad was played right after the "Time for a break". Well played sir.
Once a week Tom brings me a little happiness. Often I learn something, sometimes I laugh, but I always smile.
I'm not ready for these videos to end ☹
Mistakes make perfect, i'm glad that Tom has always been going strong in many years of doing RUclips, even with mistakes his work and effort are just about perfect.
Hey! No idea why you are standing by the Vistula river in Warsaw for this video, but it's great to see you in my city. Thanks a lot for the last 10 years and all the best for the next decade from your Polish audience.
I noticed as well, lovely warszawa
Huh, I wouldn't have guessed. Wonder what he's doing there.
I can't express how much I wish more people had a similar approach to learning and making mistakes as you do.
One of my favorite things about Tom Scott videos is the whole “one take” lecture mantra. Much appreciate the higher attention span aspect of the videos.
It's always hard to look back on the oldest stuff you've done, but that's honestly the best way to grow. Good on you!
@@ninovanhooff3926 yes, "charged via the resistor" makes even more sense, but I tried to keep the wording the same.
5:19, I 100% took that as a joke back when I watched that originally
No Tom, the biggest mistake you ever made was going to Slough
Wow, that corrections page is incredibly short (and of course this video as well) given how prolific Tom has been!
Half as Interesting does a yearly one.
This is why I've followed your videos for years. The humility to admit your mistakes and improve constantly is testament to what you are trying to do.
Mistakes, and their admissions and corrections are equally important as correct results. Good job!
The closest RUclips apology type video will get from Tom Scott

I got to say, Tom, I'm very proud of you for taking responsibility for information others have said on your programmes. You're such a humble and pure human, I hope we all can achieve the type of humility you are happy to publish to the World!
Lots of love Tom. Your videos have been a real staple to me and to many others I’m sure. It’s been an honor to partake in this portion of your human experience. I wish you only joy in whichever endeavor you take on next.
So few errors over such a length of time. You've done well, Tom! Thank you for your terrific videos.
We should celebrate mistakes that we make and learn from them so we can avoid them in the future.
You've done an amazing job over the past decade!
No way he lined up the mid roll with time for a break that's amazing
Anybody else got an advert at the exact moment Clarkson finished saying "Time for a break"? Perfect timing...
And Tom, don't beat yourself up too much over a couple of silly errors. Your videos are awesome. Thanks for them =)
They say we learn from our mistakes. It's take a truly great individual to extend and share that learning with others. Many thanks for everything Tom!
I liked the video before I even finished because I was glad to see someone own up to their mistakes. It can be beneficial to pretend we're perfect, but I believe your brand is built on honesty and I really appreciate that.
Also, I can't believe this series is almost over, but I'm glad that I have been here along the ride. I look forward to seeing what you do in the future
Your honesty is so refreshing. Thanks for being honest.
Your thoroughness and accountability speaks volumes of care and integrity. It’s not the mistake, it’s what you do with it 😉
I love the irony of pronouncing Geelong wrong in a video about mistakes
(Juh-LONG vs JEE-long)
G-Town also works 😆
I'd disagree slightly. Correctly pronounced it's Jee-LONG. Still a "long e", but the stress placed on the second syllable. Of course, in common speech the 'e' is eventually abbreviated to non-existence, hence 'j-LONG', or 'juh-LONG' if you then slow it back down.
Tom you have brought me so much knowledge and joy over the years, it must weigh on you knowing how many millions of people will miss your regular uploads. Try not to worry too much, you earned this! Go out there and absolutely crush the next chapter of your life, whatever it is!
Putting an ad at 8:42, right when you’re talking about programmes stopping for ad breaks, was brilliant
It's ok. One always has to remember that what you think others are thinking of you is not as harsh as what you think of yourself. Some people on the internet are prone to correct, but it is a drop of water in an ocean. All in all, your videos are great! Enjoy what's left of the year, cheers!
The sign of a truly good man, admitting his mistakes and working to admit and correct it! Your awesome, don’t forget it! You’ve impacted more than you know, don’t forget it! I hope you the best! Don’t forget it!! Much love
I feel honored that Tom is filming this just to the side of the beach where my friend yeeted my flip flops into the river. I would’ve thought that he’d record it back in England instead of sticking around Warsaw.
Also, is that video recorded during Tom’s last visit in Warsaw (clams checking water purity)?
I claim that is Nijmegen in the Netherlands... before watching till the end
that bridge and that wild green area with beach under it is only one in the world, and that's poniatowski bridge in Warsaw eh
Yes . But the distinctive colour of the trains . Going over give their own argument
@@TregMediaHDthose are trams, and busses, not trains. And with their yellow, and red livery they look exactly like those we have in Warsaw. So unless Nijmegen uses exactly the same color schame for their public transport, and has exactly the same looking bridge, it is Warsaw.
@@witekborowski1410 It is Warsaw, you can clearly see the Centrum in the video's last frame.
Mad respect, Tom. All these years and videos is a lot of work for entertaining us. Not only that, you're a man that embraces admitting mistakes rather than gloss over or hide them. You are the man.
I love your work Tom, it was the translation/transcription mistake in a video (the one about the Swiss shooting range over a road) that led to me working with you as a translator in another video. So I for one, am happy that some slip-ups happen :)
Love the fact that Tom kept his mistakes to a minimum all this time, and the NordVPN ad shorter than other RUclipsrs.
Mistake @2:04 regarding modern toasters. It would be the capacitor that is charged, not the variable resistor.
