  • I drive the new Volkswagen ID3 Tour Pro S a total of 260 miles to experience the driving characteristics and charging capabilities. The 77kWh battery in the Pro S has a claimed range of 340 miles (WLTP) however this particular car started out with 255 miles following a full charge. Whilst 255 miles is still excellent, I knew that with some careful and considered driving, 300 miles could be achieved for the future.
    VW's latest ID range is a glimpse at the future of electric mobility, built in carbon neutral facilities, a huge amount of effort goes into creating a machine that can be kinder to the environment. Buying and driving a car like this doesn't have to all be about the environmental credentials - if nothing else, the total cost of ownership far outweighs an ICE car, and then you have the instant torque and power! It's addictive and a pleasure to drive.

      Thanks Bruce. It's always challenging filming these sequences solo but the drone with it's self-piloting features makes that part a little less stressful.

    Thank you for this very informative video of the ID3 long range test review. I am awaiting delivery of a new ID3 and whilst I did a full test drive it was only 30 miles in total. I feel assured by your review and insightful driving tips!

      Glad the video has given you confidence in the car. It really is great to drive, SO comfortable and efficient. I have owned a few EVs over the last 3yrs and I feel I'm now beginning to master the best way to drive them. Whilst the ID3 may have intelligent regenerative braking, there is no replacing good old fashioned mechanical sympathy and common sense. I like to plan further ahead, have the regeneration on max and use my right foot to dial in the appropriate levels of input. I do the same in my Hyundai (switch off auto regen) and I see better results.
      Try different methods when you get yours and measure your results and find what works for you. Like most advice and opinions, everyone has a different take on this tech but it isn't to say the advice is always sound.
      Practice, practice and reduce the pace - is always a good place to start if you want maximum range or ignore all of that, see a reduction in range but have a lot of fun with the torque of an EV. Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe to see more content just like this.

      @@CARfariPark Outstanding comment - I have to admit I enjoy both hypermiling and enjoying the EV ‘special skills.’
      After 7 years with a 24kWh Leaf, my 77kWh ID.3 doesn’t have a single downside.
      The big test comes later on in the ice hockey season: a Sunday night match in Kirkcaldy, followed by 237 miles at night (in winter) to get home. I’m confident this car can do it without needing a top-up.

    This was a perfect review, and very specific to me! I drive a 250 mile round trip once a month and was always worried that If needed I couldn't just do it in one go, but this video shows it is possible (even though most of the time I do stop for a while half way).

For those days when you want a bit of pace, the car delivers but more importantly when maximising range is the priority, the car really delivers.

    You are clearly an excellent economical driver who knows a lot about EVs. I think most ID3 drivers will just drive it normally with the climate on auto and the radio on. The car could clearly do the trip one way without extra charge. So how much money did you save over a normal drive? How much were you distracted and therefore at increased accident risk, because you were constantly tweaking the controls for economy? Please do the trip again with normal driving, and measure the increased cost of electricity.

    One suggestion: as an EV driver with 7 years & 140k miles under my belt, I would say that battery percentage is more important than the guessometer.
    In your situation, I’d have had a look at the Charging display on the centre console menu, and with anything over 55% would have been confident making the return journey using the same driving style.

      Totally agree and good advice. In this scenario the charge was simply to demo the ease of charging. The car was barely breaking a sweat and would have comfortably made the journey back.

    Really great review I have to say! I've been looking at the ID.3 for quite some time and I'm quite impressed, but having heard of all the issues with the infotainment system and some of the driver assists functions not working properly I'm unfortunately a bit sceptical. How did you find the center screen and all the safety functions the car comes with? Was it responsive enough or was it ever laggy? I got to test drive it recently as well and I very much agree with what you said regarding the comfort and overall performance of it. Also, how did you find the interior quality?

      Hi David, thanks for the positive comments, it's greatly appreciated.
      The ID3 gets a hard time by journalists and early adopters of the model but it's difficult to give a fair long term view as I only had the car for 48hrs. I personally found the infotainment screen and haptic controls fine to use without any concern around performance but that's probably a lot to do with the fact that I'd borrowed a Golf 8 GTI Clubsport the week before, so I'd become well versed in the functionality.
      In terms of driver aids, my journeys were without fault and the car drove perfectly. The car had over 5,000 miles on the clock and been a demonstration vehicle for months.
      As for the interior quality, it's not quite like the VWs of even 3 to 5 years ago, there's a fair amount of scratchy cheaper plastics lower down but that's nit picking really. I found the seats with the armrests SO comfortable and the car enjoyable to drive. Compared to the likes of the BMW i3 it's nowhere near as refined inside but the ID3 is roomier, cheaper to maintain and has a far superior range but that's the challenge of EVs, more often than not, there is a compromise somewhere however on the whole it's a great car. For comparison, check out my review on the IONIQ Electric as that car is hugely underrated and whilst it's not a premium car, it has some excellent tech and is very very efficient. 👌🏻

    While I loved your video, I did not hear one flaw in the ID.3? For example: I've seen frist hand (also read this online a lot...) that the infotainment system is not responsive (very low refresh rate) and the software is not up to par? Is this also your experience? It all felt a bit outdated to me when I test drove the ID.3. For me range and efficiency is the most important aspect of a good EV, but the infotainment system is also quite important. As you use it to set up your entire driving experience.

      In answer to your question; many journalists will find fault with VWs latest Discover Media System but having spent a few days with the car and previously the Golf GTI Clubsport the week prior, I got used to the settings very quickly and didn't find it to be as problematic as other reviewers may lead us to believe. Yes the system is not perfect but it's also not terrible either. It's usable, responsive and served me well for my long drive plus the days in between when on loan to me. I guess it's a question of opinion and user preference. Some will not get on with the system, others will find it simple. My advice - spend a few hours or a day in one and form your on opinion based on how you will use the car.
      You said I didn't mention one flaw in the car..... Well since filming this car a few months ago, I would say the biggest problem with the ID.3 is they're not making them fast enough and obviously suffering the same problems as other OEMs, with EV parts shortages.
      Other than that, I'm really impressed with the car. It's superb!

    The ID.3, originally, was the one I've had in mind for being my new car (and my first electric btw.). Sadly, I have wrecked my old one, months before it even was available and so I've had to go with what was available at this point. Now I drive an electric Corsa for over one year already. It's far less roomy and has lesser specs in any regard. BUT driving it feels far superior then any combustion vehicle I've ever had.

    Apparently my MG ZS EV has the same drivetrain as in the small battery ID.3. I'm led to believe they both come from SAIC, MG's parent company.
    However there is one slight difference. I believe the smaller battery ID.3 in the UK costs approx £30,000 whereas my MG cost me 18,000€.

    Why did your journey start with a range of only 255 miles… I thought the pro tour had a range of 360?

      Hi there, the energy consumption prior to my collection was very high, most likely due to this car being a demonstration vehicle at a VW retailer. As you'll have seen by the end of the video, with some considered and more economical driving, the range returned to over 300 miles. I'm sure given more time with the car, I could get close to the WLTP figure, if not more. At over 4 miles per Kilowatt it's a very efficient car.

      @@CARfariPark I’ve been driving one for a couple of months now after 7 years with a Nissan Leaf.
      Town driving, especially in B mode, is good for close to 5 miles per kWh. Hit the open road and drive it like a hot hatch & you will get ~3 miles per kWh and a huge smile on your face.
      York to Glasgow (210 miles) cruising at 70mph on the motorway with the aircon on is not a problem.

      @@garethchild it's definitely a very efficient EV. Maybe I'm getting old but the comfort was the most impressive part for me but it certainly has some get up and go when you need it! I love cars and thought I was a die-hard petrol head but the new age of EVs have me fully converted.

    The general consensus is to leave the car in D and not B mode. Why, because in D mode, the car uses the sat nav information to do auto regenerative braking. It knows your coming up to a round about, and it tells you to take your foot off the accelerator pedal, and the regen kicks in to slow the car. Like wise, if you use traffic assist mode, it will regen to slow you down at speed limit changes. It has very good auto regen in D mode.

    I think the pessimistic range when you got the car was not because it was driven in town - my experience with an ID.3 is that town driving extends the range.
    IMHO it had been driven in full-blooded hot hatch mode for a few miles.

      😉 lol, I was being polite to the potential Volkswagen customers. I think the last few drives were very much enjoyed and much more on the side of JOY not TEST drive as the stats were very low.
      As you'll be all too familiar with;
      with a little more patience and some fun hypermiling, the potential range can climb very quickly.

      As it is with every all-electric car. The slower you drive the farther you can go (the optimal speed for hypermiling usually is around 18-20mph).

    What relevance is the sub-£40k price? Electric cars are VED exempt in the UK.

      Hi Andrew you are absolutely correct. EVs at present do not suffer the luxury car tax even if the RRP is above £40k.
      The point which I didn't make clear (sorry) is, the ID.3 offers fantastic equipment levels, performance and power which would easily rival any other ICE or PHEV, which would suffer the hike in running costs.
      So for anyone looking to buy a great car which also happens to be an EV, there really is far less of an excuse to not commit.

      @@CARfariPark No problem, I enjoyed the video. I have a Max Pro Performance on order, and most of the ICE cars I considered were over £40k. The VED hit along with the price of fuel makes these cars massively more expensive to run.

I am an aging boy racer with a love for the noise of a cool sports car or hot hatch but having personally made the switch on my daily cars, EV performance, silence and huge total cost of ownership savings really are compelling reasons for even the most die-hard petrol heads (like I was).

      Hi Jamie, as you will have seen from the video, I completed a DC rapid charge during my trip as I was stopping to film the car anyway but at 17:12 I talk about the return journey having still achieved a healthy 4 miles per kW (with A/C on the entire return trip).
      I arrived home with plenty of spare range (nearly 150 miles) again illustrating that considered driving technique aids energy consumption. My motorway speeds were 65mph as I mentioned at the beginning.
      At the end of the video - note my next day range after charging at home..... 312 miles! So just proves that with some very small adjustments EVs can be very frugal or if your prefer to go much faster, it's then the balance of using more energy, which will require more stops to charge. In the situations of a leisurely drive, I prefer to drop 5mph from my top speeds to help reduce the amount of charging time required, although it's different strokes for different folks. My learnings have come from having owned 2 EVs of my own over the last 3 years.

    So how much did the journey cost in electric charging ?

      Hi Chris,
      I charged up overnight on my Octopus GO tariff meaning the unit price is only 5 pence per Kilowatt. I added around 8kW so that would have cost 40p.
      The CCS charge down in Christchurch cost £9.99 as the unit price is a lot higher.
      In both circumstances the battery was not at a level where it needed to be charged but it was simply to illustrate the ease.
      With cars like the ID.3, public charging becomes less of a factor when it's possible to travel 300 miles or more to a charge but for those occasions when it's necessary to cover a lot of miles in one go, you can be on the road relatively quickly.

      It's a cool car. If I was ordering one, I'd have the 20" Sanya's but I'm splitting hairs. It's a great car. The I.D3's biggest problem is the Cupra Born. If you like a sportier car, the Cupra is a fine looking thing.

    Alright mate, the tour has a heat pump does that heat pump take its energy from the 12v car battery therefore saving on range.
    I ordered a ID3 about 5 weeks ago the tour in white and on the spec it has heat pump.

      Hi Carl, as far as I'm aware, Heat Pump is £1000 option on Tour Pro S. I have checked the VW Press and Media pack and can't see mention of the specifics but again looking at the customer website it shows as a costed option.
      In many EVs the heat loses are harvested from the motor, battery control unit and some of the other ancillaries, I can't be exactly sure for the ID3 so it would be worth checking with your local retailer for clarification. Heat Pumps are a good idea they do help to conserve some of the range by not wasting energy on heating the car but I guess it's a question of the maths and how much can actually be proven to be saved as £1000 buys a lot of electricity and to put that into perspective, on a cheap rate off-peak deal, based on the car doing an average of 4 miles per Kilowatt - a £1000 on my home tariff of 5 pence per Kilowatt would give me 80,000 miles. So I'm not sure the gains really support the reality.

      @@CARfariPark hi, all good info that mucha. I have been shoppings about for a off peak tariff. The only one I can see is octopus 4 hours per day. From 00.30 to 04.30 at 5p kw.
      I need to get a smart meter installed to get that tariff and I have read some horror stories on smart meter. Any advice cheers

      @@carlseddon2392 my house is a new build that had a pre-installed smart meter and yes I'm using Octopus EV off-peak which suits my car well as the car is never completely empty so a few hours between midnight and 4 works well. In honesty even if you were charging during peak hours at 16p it's still far cheaper than public charging.

      @@carlseddon2392 it's difficult to advise because it's all very dependent on your usage, where you're based and other incentives from the car brands. For example Hyundai now have Charge myHyundai which is a network charge card meaning you have one card and one payment account, ZapPay (as in ZapMap) do a similar thing, along with Shell and some fuel card companies. I personally use BP Pulse (formerly BP Chargemaster), their monthly subscription is fairly reasonable and unlocks a cheaper unit price at their stations. Some of the BP Pulse points are completely free others are around 15p on the subscription rate with a higher charger for DC Rapid, however they have a large network of DC 50kW chargers so I've found them useful on my travels to Dorset and Devon.

      Hi John, it's becoming a more popular build detail in EVs purely and simply because the braking system is used far less in an EV with good regeneration.
      As I'm sure you already know, the braking bias of a traditional ICE vehicle is favoured at something like 70/30 front to back and with EVs using the motor to harvest energy and reverse the motor direction to aid braking, the hydraulic braking gets used less and less. By fitting drums they are cheaper at manufacture plus they suffer less with surface rust that a disc brake would (a result of not being used). The engineering makes sense but they just look a bit lame. In honesty you won't notice any real world differences it's more just seeing them through the wheels.

      Also when you park with hot drum brakes they actually get tighter / applied more as they cool down. Disc brakes become loose as they cool down. Also they don’t get dirty and wet as easily due to their closed design.

    Having watched this video, it sounded more like an advertisement than a review. There were a couple of misleading points that I feel need clarification. I would like to point out that I am an EV owner and am happy to promote EVs. However there is nothing to be gained from making misleading statements which could lead to EV purchasers being disappointed.
    Charging speed
    “The id.3 can accept 125 kW of DC charge, meaning 200 miles can be gained in just 30 minutes”.
    While this narration is taking place, the charge speed is shown as 186 MPH on the id.3 screen which is only 93 miles in 30 minutes. It should have been made clear that the maximum charge speed can only be achieved when the battery is at optimum temperature and at a very low charge. This is of course the case for all electric vehicles.
    Range
    The video should have also made clear that the WLTP range is based on a standardised test that does not represent “real world” driving. The video gave the impression that the WLTP figure represents typical driving - it does not. The WLTP of this car is quoted to be 340 miles. Despite being driving economically and in warm, dry weather (20C) during the journey the figure of 80% battery giving 246 miles is mentioned. This equates to 307.5 miles for 100% which is well below the 340 mile WLTP. This would be significantly reduced in cold, wet conditions.
    To be fair, by EV standards the id.3 quite economical.

      Keith, whilst I appreciate feedback to my content, your comment is not well founded and will only lead to more confusion. The car was loaned to me by a garage simply to enable my growing channel to gain access to a vehicle. No sponsorship or money has changed hands and I am free to comment on the vehicles driving characteristics and credentials without any input from the manufacturer or dealer group - which is exactly what I did.
      I am a seasoned EV driver and owner. The numbers you challenge are all relative to the driving style, conditions and charging location (you're right) which is no different to a consumer choosing an I.C.E car which states fuel tank capacity, mpg and total cost of ownership.
      The ID3 is a great car and worthy of a positive review not for any other reason than being a great piece of engineering.
      I'm sorry the video content has not reached the standard you were hoping for and in your words; potentially misleading. With over 16 hours of filming and editing invested into this video with no financial benefit to me at this time, I would hope that the viewers that have already seen this content have learnt a little more than they started out with.
      Final point - At the end of the video you'll see that after some simple adjustments to my driving style on that one journey; following an overnight charge the car had a starting range of 312 miles and given more time with the car, I'm confident I'd see higher.

      EV range will not suddenly increase as a result of one stint of changes, my experience and learning shows it takes a number of economical drives and subsequent charges to then see heightened numbers.

      Hi, I did nit mean to give the impression that I thought you had been sponsored. That said there was not a single negative comment about the car during the whole video, which is why I said it felt like an advert. Perhaps if the review was a little more balanced as I’m sure no car is perfect. Congratulations on a very well put together video, which has clearly taken a great deal of time and effort to make. I apologise if my comments came across as a little harsh.
