  • My tribute to the great and legendary Middleweight champion, Carlos Monzon.
    Patreon: / hanzagod
Carlos Monzon - Was an Argentine professional boxer who held the undisputed world Middleweight championship for 7 years. He successfully defended his title 14 times against 11 different fighters and is widely regarded as not only one of the best Middleweights in history but also one of the greatest boxers of all time pound-for-pound. Known for his speed, punching power and relentless work rate, Monzon ended his career with a record of 87-3-9-1 with 59 knockouts; all of his losses were early in his career and were avenged. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, he was chosen by The Ring magazine in 2002 as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years and voted him as the best middleweight title holder of the last 50 years in 2011. As of January 2018, Monzón holds the 2nd longest unified championship reign in middleweight history at 9 consecutive defenses. Argentinians adored Monzón throughout his career. His glamorous and violent life was avidly followed both by the media and Argentine people. He was however accused many times of domestic violence by his two wives and many mistresses and of beating paparazzi.

Hit hard as a mule. The 3 losses he had were very early in his career in 1963 and 1964. After that - the man won all of his fights - All the way to 1977. He won his last fight too - beating Rodrigo Valdes - defending both his WBC Middle Weight Title and his WBA Middle Weight Title. The cat stayed undefeated for 13 years...WOW. Amazing. Even more amazing is the fact that fighters seemed to be tougher back then - and he still stayed undefeated for over a decade. Respect.

When I was a kid I was in a plane with Monzon; I am not sure if it was from Paraná or from Santa Fe, to Buenos Aires. I was too young to remember. My little brother and I went to ask him for an autograph. He was very sweet; he took his time, and joked with my little brother, asking him to spar with him when we got to Buenos Aires.
I read a lot of comments putting down Monzon´s personal life. I am not going to defend what is indefensable. But he had good friends too, that says something... that means he was not all bad. For instance, Mickey Rourke went all the way to the prison in Santa Fe to visit him.
The older I get, the more I learn to try to suspend my judgments.

Carlos Monzon, if he had been American, would have entered the legend of world boxing and earned millions of dollars, unfortunately being Argentine, his merits and greatness have not been recognized. First of all he was not a brawl boxer, he did not like to fight in the ring, he was clean, elegant, Mohamme Ali jab, right from KO more devastating than Mike Tyson's right who destroyed his opponents with a firestorm, Carlos Monzon with only two shots, left jab and immediately after the right load of dynamite knocked down the opponents. I would like to point out a feature that only the greatest boxer in boxing history possessed in the world, Mohammed Ali. Ali hit while backing away dancing like a dragonfly, very elegant footwork, extraordinary athletic training, I don't remember other great champions who hit while backing away. they won by attacking from the first to the last round, Ali and Monzon won by staggering even for 15 rounds, fans of my generation can say, I was there and I saw them fight.

They say that Sugar Ray Robinson was the best middleweight of all time, well he certainly was a great fighter. However after he won the title sugar Ray also lost it on more than one occasion. Carlos Monzon never lost the middleweight title after he won it and held it for 7 years and defended it 14 times. He also retired as champion too. That to me makes him the better of the two champions. You can then put Marvellous Marvin Hager into the mix, he was also middleweight king for 7 years and defended it 12 times but he also lost the title once to sugar Ray Leonard before retiring. Certainly Monzon vs Hagler would have been a super fight had they been around at the same time. For me it has to be Monzon as he never lost it after winning it and retired as champion.
