  • I Am A Prepper Like Many With No Professional Background
Many in the emergency preparedness community benefit from a professional background in law enforcement or the military. Most do not.
I always appreciate when preppers that have professional experience chime in with their suggestions and advice. It is greatly appreciated. I myself do not have any of that experience and anything I can learn from those that do is very helpful. The issue with some of these skills regarding self defense, medical, gardening, communications and anything else more advanced is that they have to be practiced. Storing away surplus supplies is really only limited by affordability and space. The skills required to do it are very basic. But the skills to use specialized equipment require practice, professional training and repetition. Which is why I do what I can with what I have. Like I said, I am like most of you. Just doing my best to be ready for whatever comes our way.

Keep this in mind. When a guy gets military experience, that's fantastic - BUT it's always in context of what you can do with the full might of the U.S. government backing you up (resupplies, reinforcements, rescues, etc.). Doing lone wolf SHTF stuff / training, changes the game fundamentally / profoundly. A large portion of X-grunts or LE would have to learn this stuff as well. For SHTF, overall, you may be well ahead of many of them in skills.

Years ago I spent some time in Canada working with an old man from Manitoba, helping him build a cabin.
He talked about growing up in northern Manitoba during the depression. Middle of nowhere, living in the bush. He told me he didn't even know there was a depression until he went down to Winnipeg.
I've never forgotten that. Best plan there is, live in a place so far out no one will notice you.

Weapons always came easy to me having owned my first rifle at eight after outshooting my father with his rifle at the range. From that point on I went hunting every year going forward. I was blessed to have a father who would spend the time to teach me life and living skills on the regular. I also had a great mentor in the old Frenchman across the street who would also take me hunting, fishing and woods wisdom many will never use or learn. He could literally smell deer, I still dunno how he managed that. The Boy Scouts taught me a lot too. Like CPR, other first aid, bushcraft, wilderness survival, land navigation and one match fire building in any weather. All these things I was proficient at very early in life. Growing up I spent more time exploring in the woods and traipsing through the mountains than watching tv or playing video games. We had neither until I was past the point of wanting to do more than watch the "Rat Patrol" once a week or "McHales Navy". I was introduced to CBRN issues in during the Cuban/Soviet missile crisis, great loss when Kennedy was killed, war refugees when Cambodians were sent to our town and anger because they had to be. I enlisted in the military before I graduated high school rather than attend college. My grandfather was an electrician building ships during WWII, my father was on a ship during Korea, I was in the military during Vietnam and after. I participated in maneuvers on the East German border in the seventies. All of that and much, much more like learning trapping from one of the last legendary mountain men and on. I have been a prepper, we called it survivalism, for fifty years and more. This is a long, introduction of a few of the many experiences I have had to show that I am as prepared as most anyone can be. Yet, I can say without reservation that you'll always be lacking something in knowledge or experience even after having survived contact with some enemy. I pray that you and your followers, including myself, never have to experience what I have in my time here on Earth. My time here likely grows short due to much abuse and damage both from myself and others, so it will be up to others, younger and stronger than me, like you to carry the light of freedom forward. Don't let anyone belittle what you are doing because you are doing the best that you can. Let your inner light and common sense guide you. No one can ask more. God Bless us every one.

Good stuff MP.. You brought up coms. Suggestion for a non firearm video would be setting up like a beofang radio. I mean realistically that’s about the most popular for the prepared citizen..
Other than that keep doing what you are doing. I’m of the belief some people don’t take security as serious as they should.. I read a lot of comments on prepper channels that people seem to think unprepared people are magically going to form community and sit around a campfire singing kumbaya because they might have in a localized natural disaster or something. I’m also of the opinion many people don’t fully comprehend the target they put on their back by having preparedness discussions with others. I’ve had those discussions and I’d be willing to bet 99% of the people I had them with still don’t have a months worth of water, food and other bare bones basic needs put back. 100% of them are firearm owners and although they most of them don’t have a lot of ammo, 100% of them have enough ammo to give someone a very bad day when they are desperate.. I don’t care how you shake it and how you went about the discussion. If you had the discussion of the need to get prepared with someone they are heavily going to assume you have supplies. They don’t know what you have, but when they have nothing they know you have more than they do..
Will many unprepared try to work together to form community? Yeah I’m sure they will. But how exactly is that going to work out when there is pretty much no supplies to begin with? You can’t throw seeds in the ground and they magically instantly ready for harvest, assuming you have the seeds to plant to begin with. How long will it take for tempers to flare and infighting when everyone is starving.. Another demographic of people will likely band together as well. That’s the unprepared that has nothing and out looking to take, no matter how little it is and by all means necessary.. I’m of the opinion the unprepared people who tried to set around a campfire and sing kumbaya will be among the take demographic sooner rather than later.. If you prep a years worth of food and SHTF and you form a community with 364 unprepared people guess what. You had a days worth of food and now you are just as screwed as they are.. It’s literally common sense..
I’ve lived thru a localized natural disaster that left a lot of people without power for more than a month. Even with the grocery store having a natural gas generator and the ability to drive 25 miles to get gas for gas generators a lot of people were still losing their minds… There was also more chiefs than Indians trying to run the show and causing all sorts of infighting when not getting their way. People trying to take control and give people orders and absolutely refusing to listen to people that where specialized in something they have absolutely zero clue about. One of the worst ones is the disaster manager for the county. He literally asked 3 diesel mechanics what was wrong with a piece of equipment and argued with each one of them and saying they don’t know what they are talking about when he is lucky to put fuel in the damn thing.. That’s the kinda BS people have to look forward to with the community that’s going to magically happen. And mind you this was a local event with light at the end of the tunnel with access to a stoked grocery store and fuel availability just a less inconvenient. I can only imagine the chitshow an actual SHTF will look like.

I appreciate the trained skills veterans have (my husband is a vet). But those are not the only skills helpful for SHTF. In fact, you may never need to fend off attackers or marauders. Much more likely you'll need survival, networking, problem-solving, construction, and food production skills to counteract a failing economy, high goods prices, and a fractured society. We can't all be commandos; in fact, most are not. Train the best way you can and share the knowledge you gain with others. That's what we should expect from each other. I'll take a friend who's spent time training regularly over someone who learned some skills a long time ago and never kept those skills honed or is too proud to share his/her knowledge. Community over perceived elite status. JS. If you never pretend to be something you're not and be honest, you'll always command respect.

When friends talked about killing 'intruders' post SHTF I asked them what they plan on doing with the bodies. You know, the things that rot, cause disease, and may be missed by friends. Disposing of those things could cause more problems than you are prepared to deal with.

I don't have a personal military or LE background either due to lifelong physical issues but that doesn't stop me from being prepared as best as possible. I did start out my life in and around military installations as my Dad served 22.5 years in the US Army so I attribute my desire to be prepared to that early exposure to military life. Striving to be as self sufficient as possible is something I've worked on for many years, still working on it. We do the best we can with what we have.

I’ve got a pro background In LE, fire, and EMS. None of it really matters. All the info you’ll learn in an academy for any of the above is here on the internet, if not better info. The biggest difference to me would be some experience and practice In real medical scenarios. But being a cop doesn’t make you a shooter or gunfighter, being a fireman doesn’t mean you’re doing technical rescues every day, even being a medic doesn’t mean you’re doing CPR and fixing GSWs every day. Theyre all few and far between. And with certain skills like CBRN on the fire side, even if you’re experienced and know how to use the equipment, if you don’t personally own any of that, it means nothing. I think civilians have every tool at their disposal to be prepared. We first responders are just like you.

Love Midway. Been a customer since the early 90's, the mail order days. lol I don't have any actual firearm training, plenty of hand-to-hand, even with some weapons. Reading the comments, it seems you're doing lots of the right things.
My opinion ? Keep getting better every day. Train physically. Do some kettle bell swings, then pick up an arm and shoot while still breathing hard.
I'm doing a very small garden this year, after skipping the last few. I did practice foraging for local plants though, and still do. To me, that's just as important. Just have to be sure the plants haven't been sprayed, so I stick to the land I know.

And that arrogant East Coast Nurse Prepper lady annoys me too much to watch.
Also i have some advice on how to enjoy growing your own food more.
#1! Buy a book or 2 by LOCAL EXPERTS.
HOUSTON AREA GARDENING by Bob Randall helped me so much, but it's obviously not for you.
    2) Grow stuff you love.
For me that's Silver Queen corn, onions, broccoli (steamed with butter and Cajun seasoning I love it) watermelon....
And i love apples and have Golden Dorsett, Figi, and Gala. They won't produce every year but that's ok.
    My grapefruit will.
Also dont forget the value of good mulch, and how healthy it is for the rest of your family to help with the garden/orchard ;)

Try new things and such. Get yourself 40 cases of Vienna Sausages and a sling shot and that's ALL YOU NEED. Uh, no. Different people need different things in different places.
