  • In this video I show you step by step how to build a handheld portable train air horn!
It's super easy and fun build, simply uses a drill for power and housing, budget friendly with the horn kit only $30'ish on Amazon. This horn blasts SUPER loud, with an "unlimited tank" with rechargeable 18V batteries.

Just built one using a Craftsman work light that came in a package with a drill and a saw. Never used it. I bought the horn kit online and used a tomato paste can as the compressor “holder” because the work light was just the grip and switch after removing the lens. I got one end open and left the bottom on through which I mounted the can to the switch body with four flathead self tapping screws. I extended the wires with and add on splice and fed them through a 1/4” hole I drilled in the can. A couple crimped on connectors hooked to the compressor, mounted the horns attached to the furnished bracket and mated to the can body with a large hose clamp. Where the compressor extended out from the can I used black duct tape wrapped once around to keep it from sliding out. Worked great and looks good too, lol! I taped off the surfaces I didn’t want painted and shot the whole mess with flat black paint. It looks like something from Death Race 2000!

The reason for those different tones is because there is too much air going to the diaphragm an therefore you need to slightly limit the air or remove a spacer in the diaphragm. this is a trial and error so just keep testing it until it sticks to the main tone

It's probably because the voltage on the battery is too high. The horns were designed for 12 volts and the battery outputs 18 volts, so the compressor is blowing more air than it's supposed to.

I mean, it is a very time consuming process to grind the housing to fit, but I would't recommend to heat the plastic to make it soft. Depending on the used polymers it could release some unhealthy fumes...
Interesting and fun build though! Stay safe everybody!
PS: The horn might be squeaking, because it is run by 18V instead of 12V what it is designed for.

    • @JorgeL721

This is because sound cancels itself out. If you pick the right size of trumpets (like a major chord or perfect 5th), you start getting synergy instead of dissonance and you get a louder sound.

The chances are the 12V would give you a better sound as the compressor is rated for 12V. You can hear in his build that the tone changes. That's because there is too much air flow because he's using 18V instead of 12V.

Hahahaha, my eeeearly morning loud playing music A hole neighbor is going to hear a great tune pretty soon. A single looooong tune. Idk if that's as loud as a train or trucker air horn, those will make you go deaf at close range.
