  • How to make a simple Air Horn. These horns are LOUD! They can be scaled up as I show in the video, but be aware that the bigger you make them the more air they will take to function. Get your free audio book from Audible here: adbl.co/17ujzYW (I finished The Martian, highly recommended)
Parts used for this project (small version):
    1"x 1"x 1/2" T Fitting
    1" x 1/2" Adapter
    1" Plug
    6" x 1/2" PVC Pipe
    Freezer Bag
Long Funnel (found at auto parts stores)
    Parts for large horn:
    2"x 2"x 2" T Fitting
    2"x 1" Adapter
    2" Plug
    6" x 1" PVC Pipe
    1" Coupling
    Freezer Bag
    Large Funnel
    2"x 1" Reducer
    1"x 1/2" Reducer
Both horns are operated using a large manual air pump in the video, though they can also function using compressed air or simply by blowing into the inlet with lung power. #NightHawkInLight

To explain the noise from the 10ft pipe edition; I bet you anything the noise is caused by air going from sonic to supersonic flow. The diaphragm is likely causing compression waves to overlap, compressing the air and causing it to go supersonic.

I made a version of the large horn myself, it works. The world shall tremble before my mighty roar. No man, woman, or child will escape the sound.
Also note that even the large horn does not need a pump, you can blow straight into it just fine and it'll still work.

The Horn they use at swim races , I just tossed out the Air Canister and Bungee Corded the Tire Pump and Horn to my handlebars and give it random Toots when I ride around my Neighborhood . But THIS is the kind of thing that would get me into ridiculous amounts of trouble ! Gonna have to build one !

I built one of these, and it worked fantastically well. I got the best performance using fairly thick vinyl sheeting as the membrane.
I also tried to get an ultra-deep tone by attaching 50 feet of rubber garden hose, but since the prototype was lung-powered, I couldn't push enough air to get it to work. Though the couple of times I *did* get it to work, it sounded a lot like your 10-ft-pipe version, only slower and deeper in tone.

This horn is essentially the same principal as a reed pipe in a pipe organ. Reed pipes can be as short as 1' or as long as 64'. Generally a 64' pipe (which is very rare) can only be felt. A 32' pipe can both be felt and heard. Today such pipes are mimicked by the use of electronics and speakers because of the excessive cost of such pipes. (hundred thousand dollars or more.)
In a reed pipe there is usually a very thin piece of brass with a very slight curve along its length. It rests against the side of an open sided tube with a stopper at the bottom. The reed flexes back and forth against the tube (Shallot) All the rest is virtually the same as your horn.

Interesting. It looks like the shape of the funnel "bell" has a lot to do with pitch. The difference between no funnel and with funnel on the smaller assembly was about an octave, but the difference in pitch between the small assembly with the black funnel and the larger one with the orange funnel was only about a half-step.

I did a bit of audio editing for the video so don't put too much weight in measuring the differences the funnel makes, but you came to the correct conclusion. The black funnel did a lot more to lower the pitch than the red one did, but the larger horn also started off at a lower note.
