To explain the noise from the 10ft pipe edition; I bet you anything the noise is caused by air going from sonic to supersonic flow. The diaphragm is likely causing compression waves to overlap, compressing the air and causing it to go supersonic.

I built one of these, and it worked fantastically well. I got the best performance using fairly thick vinyl sheeting as the membrane.
I also tried to get an ultra-deep tone by attaching 50 feet of rubber garden hose, but since the prototype was lung-powered, I couldn't push enough air to get it to work. Though the couple of times I *did* get it to work, it sounded a lot like your 10-ft-pipe version, only slower and deeper in tone.

This horn is essentially the same principal as a reed pipe in a pipe organ. Reed pipes can be as short as 1' or as long as 64'. Generally a 64' pipe (which is very rare) can only be felt. A 32' pipe can both be felt and heard. Today such pipes are mimicked by the use of electronics and speakers because of the excessive cost of such pipes. (hundred thousand dollars or more.)
In a reed pipe there is usually a very thin piece of brass with a very slight curve along its length. It rests against the side of an open sided tube with a stopper at the bottom. The reed flexes back and forth against the tube (Shallot) All the rest is virtually the same as your horn.

I'm really interested in what's going on scientifically that makes the air blowing turn into sound waves production.
Plus : your "audible" sponsor seems nice ! I'll try listening to one of the audio books,

A great exercise in the acoustics of an air horn. So, extending the length of the exit pipe deepens the sound or do we need to enlarge the size of the T-Piece (horn body)? The long tube had a very warbled (deep sound) effect, would a funnel at the end smooth out the sound? How long does the diaphragm last? This looks like it doesn't need so much pressure to operate like the truck horns on the market that require a bulky (and expensive) reservoir tank. This being the 21st century where everything works at the press of a button, can I use the standard air pump from an old set of musical air horns? Might be a good project for my high school engineering class to explore
