To explain the noise from the 10ft pipe edition; I bet you anything the noise is caused by air going from sonic to supersonic flow. The diaphragm is likely causing compression waves to overlap, compressing the air and causing it to go supersonic.
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all the hard work and awesome production quality that goes into your videos. So many DIY's on youtube are almost painful to watch but yours are always informative and easy to understand. Thank you for the top quality content!
Thank you for simplifying it for us, I’ve looked at other videos and they were making it far too sophisticated to understand the actual workings of the foghorn
2:33 You should sell that sound sample to a dubstep artist! Or make more of those horns with different lengths of pipes, get a few people to play those horns, and you'll have an acoustic dubstep band!
I subscribed to you a LONG time ago when you used to make fireworks. I am happy in the direction your channel is taking though. I have learned a bunch of cool things and I am always excited to see when you post a new video.
I currently use a Bicycle pump connected to and Air Horn that came with an aerosol can . The Horn they use at swim races , I just tossed out the Air Canister and Bungee Corded the Tire Pump and Horn to my handlebars and give it random Toots when I ride around my Neighborhood . But THIS is the kind of thing that would get me into ridiculous amounts of trouble ! Gonna have to build one !
That 10 foot pvc pipe sound was epic! A couple of those on your truck would really tell people when to get going and that you mean business! Cool video man!
I have an old army signal horn that works just like this. It has a brass plate for the diaphragm. If too much dust gets in it, I need to clean it to make it work again. I will make a short video to show the inside of it if you want.
Curious, would the sound quality of the horn improve if a rubber sheet was used instead of thin plastic? For example, taking a chunk of balloon latex and using that as the diaphragm.
Hello just wanted to say i love your channel. I love science alot, when i searched "cool science" on youtube you were the first to pop up and ive watched you since 😃
I made a version of the large horn myself, it works. The world shall tremble before my mighty roar. No man, woman, or child will escape the sound. Also note that even the large horn does not need a pump, you can blow straight into it just fine and it'll still work.
Hey ! Remember my comment about science that makes what you do actually work ? Well this is the perfect example of a video that (to my humble opinion) woud require a tiny scientific explanation. I'm really interested in what's going on scientifically that makes the air blowing turn into sound waves production. Plus : your "audible" sponsor seems nice ! I'll try listening to one of the audio books, Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this knowledge 🙏 I'm a trucker annoyed that people carelessly cut-off an 80,000lbs Semi. I want a horn that will vibrate their car 🚗 so that they fear cutting-off Semis again. Thus saving future lives. So now I know longer = deeper.
Hey one thing that may help for sound variation is a balloon for deeper sound you have the balloon less stretched out and for higher sound more stretched out
What sort of sound can you get out of this? Would it be somewhat similar to the other diy train horns? I'm not sure that the camera quite does it justice.
Great video as always, and a note to your viewers, the Martian is an awesome book. Well worth buying. I originally bought the kindle version, but it's good as an audio book too. I'm looking forward to the movie they are making about it now.
Love this simple project ! I wonder if you couldn't create something similar to be quickly assembled for a survival situation in a backpack scaled version. Would be way more effective than the small CO² air horns !
I built one of these, and it worked fantastically well. I got the best performance using fairly thick vinyl sheeting as the membrane. I also tried to get an ultra-deep tone by attaching 50 feet of rubber garden hose, but since the prototype was lung-powered, I couldn't push enough air to get it to work. Though the couple of times I *did* get it to work, it sounded a lot like your 10-ft-pipe version, only slower and deeper in tone.
How does the thickness of the diaphragm affect the horn? I've seen a lot of horns that have 7.5" diameter, 0.09" diaphragms and I was wondering how that would change the sound I get.
@@Nighthawkinlight thanks for replying! I'm going to recreate the Tripod sound effect from the 2005 version of War of the World's and scare the crap out of my neighbors >:)
i read the-"the martian" book, in real life, not in the internet about three months ago and i highly recommend this book, its very interesting, if andi wire reads this, i will like if there will be a part two for this book, maybe when something happens to wattni on the way back home...
Ben McFarlane They make rubber pipe end caps. You could slip one over the end of the T and press the pipe against it on the inside. That should be a pretty sturdy diaphragm.
Just how much more pressure is needed for very deep tones? I mostly want a deep tone, not necessarily with much bass (easily boosted in DAWs). Also, how would one go about tuning it? Fine adjustments in length?
Did you do any db tests? and whats the highest psi that plastic could handle? Im guessing a heavier material would handle MUCH higher psi and give a lot higher db volume?
The effect with the 10ft tube is rad! I'd like to see you try it with an air compressor and a 4" piece of tube
No doubt! That might be a summer project
NightHawkInLight
Did you try put a funnel at the end of the 10ft pole ?
Zelif I did. It didn't make much of a difference.
I subscribe to you

I wonder if the long fog horn sound would be the same if you added elbows but ended up with the same length of pipe?
That last one sounded amazing. It would strike fear into mm late at night.
Then my plan is coming together nicely....
hehehehhehe :P sory for this extra notification :(
Sounds like a Jake brake for a truck!
Moth man?
Sounds like Sasquatch tooting in his pants.
That's awesome - love it. Now I've just got to remember where I parked my ship!
They're sneaky buggers.
NightHawkInLight 0 to British in three words...
i prefer the britsh guy talking, but cool video!
All I have to do is find where I parked my train.;-)

How do you come up with these ideas.. :D
HOW DID YOU GET HERE? XD
I'm seeing many well known people!

Need some ice for your burn?
I need to find a way to fit the last one into my car. I need it.
I haven't experimented yet to see if the pipe can be coiled up with a bunch of elbow fittings for the same result, but I bet it would work!
That would sound epic people would be like WTF was that aha
I was thinking about shoving one in my ass for when I fart.
i bet you could add it to the end of your exhaust XD
Might be able to replace the horn with the funnel and pop it out of the hood, would look badass enough.
That's pretty awesome! Simple to build!
hey why are you here? get back to making awesome videos!
Can u make a review about laser that can burn that people all ready buy please and then make it better in some awesome was
Thanks dude, my son is now driving me crazy!!!
The last one sounds like Jake Brake!
I said the same thing.
Amazing design!!! I've always wanted to make one but never actually searched how to make. Thanks for making this video!!!

Thanks for the awesome project! For less then $5 we had a blast tonight! Keep up the great work very much appreciated!!
Awesome! I wonder how you'll sneak the 10ft one into a stadium for use during a game. :)
Two foot sections and a bum leg. ;-)
A Bose style sound box in a backpack?
Great sounding fog horn!

if someone made a 10 hr version of that noise i'd be happy :)

Noce work Ben!
Using a 16-inch diameter pipe, 29 feet long, will produce the brown note.
The brown note has been debunked, however, a horn that size would likely make you crap your pants due to the sheer volume :P
@@dalegibson9172 should be called the brown pants note.
@@dalegibson9172 save it for Independence Day , why not? You got the right !

This is an awesome PVC project. What gave you the inspiration for this project?
I saw some videos of cruise ship horns and thought it would be cool to have one.
NightHawkInLight this can be for my science fair
Thank you for showing us how the air horn is made! And how the sound is modified!

The martian was a great book! I read it a while ago. Cool project!
It was really good. Destin at SmarterEveryDay told me about it. The narration in the audio book is the best I've ever heard also.
It was a great read - with emphasis on "read". I don't care to have others read to me - I don't see the point of "Audible"...
The BEST air horn video on youtube. I will make this bad boy!
I made you today and used my air compressor blow nozzle for the air supply. Thank you for making this video.
Saved to my Larp playlist. Thank you for the video.
Multiple air compressors all feeding into one GIANT version of this would epic.
I really enjoy watching your videos I wish you posted them more often
Thanks!! Made this today, A rubber glove as a diaphragm works awesome too. The town hears it haha
This video was awesome!! Expressly the last one.
I"m coming across many neat ideas for PVC. This is another I will add to my list. Thanks.

You are awesome I don't know how you do all your projects by yourself
I wunder why people don't like your videos your videos are like the coolest videos I ever seen. I also shared them to a lot of people.

It was a great video, this was my first video I've seen of yours, and I'm definitely coming back for more. Keep up the good work!
👍🏻👍🏻 I’m going to mount a 20’ length of 4” pvc on my pipe rack and try this when I have some time. Thanks!

AWESOME!!! something i'm going to do this!
what kind of psi would that mattress pump be running at. Say if you were to use an air compressor with a regulator
Less than 5psi
I like the Pvc pipe one it sounds awesome thanks for making it

Incredible and simple and awesome and I love this stuff and thank you so much for being in the world
got yourself a new sub with this. thank you.
if you used rubber from a bicycle tire instead of the plastic bag for a diaphragm would you get a lower tone?
Can the tone be adjusted by changing the length of the barrel?
ya man
Yep, I am a big kid at heart and love things that make a lot of noise and I have every thing I need for this except the T :)
I just beat the Mass effect trilogy for the 9th time this week, and when you did the reaper sound i got chills lol
Have you experimented with more durable diaphragm materials for longevity?
Hey one thing that may help for sound variation is a balloon for deeper sound you have the balloon less stretched out and for higher sound more stretched out

It takes a while sometimes. I have lots of ideas that don't work right that never get made into videos.

How would a 90 degree turn effect the sound? Like if not enough room for long horn could an elbow and another section be added?

Can we place a solenoid behind the diaphragm and change the frequency

Now how do you make a leg horn? Thank you I'll be here all week!
Can you add compressor or air tank instead of pump and would it make it louder?
Yeah, it will work great with a compressor. If you want to feed it really high pressure though you will need to upgrade to a stronger diaphragm.
NightHawkInLight any recommendations for other diaphragm materials?
i wonder if i could get a setup like this to play one of my didgeridoos.
Ben McFarlane They make rubber pipe end caps. You could slip one over the end of the T and press the pipe against it on the inside. That should be a pretty sturdy diaphragm.
is there a way to get the ten foot pipe sound with something that can be rolled up so there it is still movable?
I really enjoy your videos and projects, keep it up!
Auto-flatulator is awesome. Cheers!
Been a long time subscriber. Always amazed at what you build. Keep rockin'
loved it ! also. small teaser at the end of the video hun ? I loved that water glass effect !
Well played, watched the entire sponsor spot because of the background video.
You can make a fiberglass funnel for any size and shape.
Tenkeygeezer said the flare was of Masonite or something.
That was pretty cool! Thanks for making a video.
Any recommendations for high frequencies? Like 15-20 khz? (I'm getting older, and the dog next door is barking at nothing a LOT)
I might make a version of this that you blow into to make the sound, and cover holes to change the pitch.
Just an idea.
This is a really cool project I'm excited to try my own hand at making it
what happens if you place a thick diaphragm like rubber from a inner tube?
Im sure the neighbours will love this one, thanks!
Just how much more pressure is needed for very deep tones? I mostly want a deep tone, not necessarily with much bass (easily boosted in DAWs). Also, how would one go about tuning it? Fine adjustments in length?

AWESOME project/video! Keep up the great videos dude!
Did you do any db tests?
and whats the highest psi that plastic could handle? Im guessing a heavier material would handle MUCH higher psi and give a lot higher db volume?
Hello. I think you are amazing and keep up the great work
curious about attaching the horn on the end of the 10ft tube... anything different?
What happens when you put the large funnel on the ten foot pipe?
