    This pump works EXCELLENT with basic windmill pumps (using crankshaft mechanical leverage arms) too. You can even use this with 'high-reach' windmills, and drive this pump with simple counter-balance weights at the ground level. Excellent video.

    Very nice job. :-) I made a very high pressure version pump a long time ago using rigid, thick wall aluminum tubing, using ball bearings / springs for my check valves. I spun the tube with a very small round file(rat-tail) held firmly against it to create the perfect shape groove for the o-ring to go in. One thing to note, the vaseline is very bad for rubber, go with the KY(LOL), or silicone grease.

      Thanks for the tip! I've heard that from a few people, so it's probably correct!

    • @electronicsNmore

      You have a very nice channel, and well made videos. :-) If you have a bag of those rubber o-rings, and they were inexpensive, then just use vaseline and swap them out when they go bad.

    • @TheaDragonSpirit
      @TheaDragonSpirit 9 лет назад +1

      Just use vegetable oil. Cheap as hell. But in all honesty you don't really need it on this kind of device. It will not wear down much if at all with the water in it.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore 9 лет назад +1

      Fortunately many o-rings today are made from neoprene. Vaseline will not harm them. You only have to worry about less expensive rubber o-rings.

      Did you have any problems with o-rings and inner pipe fitting into outer pipe? I could not get it to fit inside and the cut I made for o-rings was pretty deep.

      Please did you just leave the pump in place and let it flow thru the pump, or did you submerge the outgoing hose and then disconnect it from the pump while submerged. thank you.

    vaseline is a petroleum based lubricant, it will degrade and damage the plastic o-rings. Use silicone grease.

    think about how much better it would be if you sanded the inside of the other pipe lets say up to 1000 grit to get is real smooth. might be overkill but it would make the O-rings last much longer and make for much better seal. I bought one of those cheap cast iron hand water pumps and tore it down and did a lot of fine finishing and polishing and it tripled its ability so I see no reason why thing would be be the same here. Great video. I am actually thinking about making one with bigger pipe. to get more volume

    I modified the design. I took a one inch Repair coupler made of PVC and cut it then used a heat gun to expand it over the 1 1/4 inch pipe. This allows me to use the rubber ring instead of the third O-Ring and the screw on compression allows me to adjust the compression on the Rubber ring.

    Ideal principle for a hand-cocked water balloon or paintball gun! Especially if you work it like an arbalest and use leverage to cock the gun. My mind is seeing something like an ordinary water bottle screwed upside down on the back of a PVC rifle, something like a pressure canister. Water cannon? High-powered dart gun?

    I discovered your videos only yesterday and I love them all! Regarding this pump, you should know that silicone grease needs to be used and never petroleum jelly ("Vaseline") because petroleum jelly degrades rubber (the O-rings). Also, it should be clear that the only way to seal PVC threaded fittings is with teflon tape and never pipe dope. Wow, I was dreaming of having a manual water pump like this during Hurricane Irene when I lost power and my basement sump pump at 4 am and had to start bailing water from my sump by hand and candlelight. How about a low-voltage pump that can be used as a back-up system with a charged car battery? It would need an impeller, check valve and automatic float switch and be compact enough to fit along the the sump side wall with the primary pump in place. It's available online but for several hundred dollars. Thanks!

    I made mine 3.5 feet long because I'm a little on the tall side, and I messed up making the grooves for the o rings. It was a quick fix though, and it pumps about 3 cups per cycle. I have a well in my backyard that I use for watering my plants and this seems like it could be a quick fix if anything went wrong with it. Please do more projects with the 1-way valves, I have 4 more of them that I don't know what to do with.

      My challenge is that I have tried other pumps to push water through a water filtration device, but most are in the style of bilge pumps, which don't build up the head pressure, to push water through a filtration system - at a decent flow rate. This simple pvc pump does. I wish I knew where I could buy something that worked as well, and didn't need to manufacture it. Thoughts or suggestions?

    I´m way too late for this to be read, but here I go anyway: you are losing a lot of capacity if the mobile part of your piston is hollow. A gret improvement should be expected if the end of the tube is sealed somehow, reducing what is called in compressors tech (which is applied here) the "dead volume".

    Hey Grant, I really like this project and think I might build one just for grins. Be careful using vaseline on o-rings. I'm not sure what the chemistry of yours are, but if they are latex based the o-rings will dissolve over time since Vaseline is petroleum based. I know, I know, not that big of an issue on a 10 dollar pump, but just FYI.
