I can't believe I found this! Exactly what I've been looking for. Hard to find because my Jayco is even bigger 😮 18' 10" Closed & 23' 8" Open. I have been procrastinating about the cables, now I feel ready and I can tackle this job! It's a little intimidating for me since this is my first camper EVER and doing all the work and remodeling myself. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!

The customer is hiring us to just get his pop-up roof down and he will take it to a shop that has a lower shop rate than we do. That was my idea I pitched to him to save him some money on the repair. Was not really looking forward to making this complete repair in the field with too many unknowns. With you running into the month delay on your parts from Jayco on this job, and we are having that same issue over here too with production delays and getting parts. Best for me just to get him mobile again eh'.

Hi great video finally understand how it works I have a Jayco Penguin which the previous owner had 1 cable brake due to forgetting to check roof latches when I checked the system after we purchased it found the eyebolts were open and not been replaced so I replaced them, my understanding is the eyebolts are there to act as a fuse if you like (week point) so if there is an issue when winding the roof up the eyebolt fails instead of breaking a cable.
I have purchased spare cable and crimping tool for just in case and have the confidence to tackle the job myself if necessary.

Just what I needed to know. Cable snapped on the ferrule in the slug on the front left corner 3 days ago when winding up.

Jayco are surviving on brand name but the durability is very questionable.
The roller brackets looked like you could have remade the bent sides easily out of 2mm(1/8) plate and they would never have bent again. Just a bit of welding,drilling and swaping the roller over. It would have saved time waiting for parts from the dealer.

I had a coleman pop up that had a 3-pc. telescopic c-chanel with pulleys in it that worked like a fork-lift each corner cable made its way to a central drive shaft at two points. One in front and one in back. A screw system would draw the points tword each other when the crank was turned
I have seen that system. I only remember working on it one time.

It's 04/28/2022. I'm Bob Baird, in Phoenix, AZ. I am very much grateful for your RUclipss on replacing cables in a Jayco popup; mine is a '92' model 1206. I'm almost done, but got one push spring that's jamming a short way up the bottom lift post section. The push spring does not have the top 'rivet' [yet, I must add]: what exactly is the purpose of that bullet-shaped part? Could its lack be a possible cause here?
Incidentally, I have a son named Cameron. He's an identical twin, 6' 7", 250 lbs.
Yes, that missing button could be the problem.
Just watched your video and learned a lot. I am trying to replace the back two cables on a 1998 jayco 8sd. The roughest part is cutting your way into the corners. Jayco says remove the screws and you are there---wrong. As you showed you may have to remove some cabinets. Then I talked to Jayco and , as you said, they tell you to go to a dealer to get your parts.. We will see what works but your video was great.

Sometimes too much lube is not good. Be careful.
Thanks for posting this! Lots of great info. I purchased an old Viking popup and the previous owner replaced all the cables but made them all too short so it doesn't fully collapse! Hopefully I can find that perfect length of cable that it'll be fully raised without the cables hitting the winch, but also be able to fully collapse without the cables hitting the pulleys. There doesn't appear to have much of a margin.

That was super fascinating Never in a hundred years would I have imagined using springs like that, but it males perfect sense. Under compression, its easily as strong as a similar sized solid shaft. Yep...this was a long one, but really interesting and informative. Thanks for sharing !!

Great video, helped me a lot when replacing all the cables (including winch) and some pulleys on our 1995 Coromel Magnum 340XC. This is an Aussie windup but very similar to the Jayco system. I used your idea of using a trolley jack with a long piece of timber to push up one corner where the cable had snapped. Keep up the good work.

I feel your pain. Performed the same repair on my Jayco pop up where I replaced both floor tracks in the front and back. Finally delivered the parts but the front was only half the assembly with only one tube for the spring. Two months later, they deliver the proper front track assembly... Frustrating to say the least...

Nice Job, I bet after your done the labor rate was 25 times what the parts where. 😵💫 of course people have to be aware of is that when these things are built the manufacture most likely have jigs and of course none of the cabinets or any thing else is installed. 🤪🤪💪🏻😎

I'm hoping I won't have to replace my system for a few years yet, (2014 Coromal Navigator) but when I do, I'll now have the confidence to do the job myself. Good vid. although I wouldnt change the eye bolt for bigger ones. More likely to break a cable in stead of an eye bolt witch is much easier to replace.
In 25 years. I have never had one come back. I must be doing something right.

All Seasons Mobile RV Service. Went to Lowe’s today. Upgraded the 4 eye bolts. Working on the roof now. The wood is very rotted on the sides. Any suggestions without taking the entire shell apart and off? I was thinking about cutting the sides flush with the top and then just putting new sides which would be secured from the top of the roof and from under the weather stripping. Could you please also recommend a good roll on roof sealant that I can purchase at Lowe’s? I did get a good roof sealer for around all of the molding.
@@anthonypendzich7942 sounds like you have a pretty big job going there. The sides of the top where the legs mount have to be strong enough to support the top. I am not aware of any good roof coatings at lowes, but there are several good RV roof coatings. The RV coatings are like a thick coat of rubber when it cures. Do your homework on coatings, some will adhere to several different surfaces.

I had to go into my pop up and I let my grandson open the lock down latches.
And he did not do one all the way and snap
So after freaking out I hit RUclips and found your post. I’m off to buy a feral clamp tool. What size cable should I use and I’m going to get bigger eye bolts and I will weld them shut thank you and your grandson for this great video
Go back with the same size cable as the original.

I have bought these parts before. The best place I have found is Popup Parts or now it might be unbder CanvasReplacement. Anyway they have the part numbers and you get them quick. You don't have that run around with Jayco.
I have priced several replacement canvases from them over the years. I bought 1new canvas, but didn't know they carry other parts too. "Hanna" sells popup parts too. (I recently found out about them. Haven't ordered anything from them yet)

Great video and I learned a lot from it. I am having trouble taking off the “slug” from the end of the old cable to put on to the new cable. How do I take it off?
You might have to spread it a little bit, but it should slip off.
We had to replace our cables on our Jayco 1206 camper. Watched your videos and very helpful, thank you very much. That was a piece of cake and didn't take long at all. But, the cables are getting twisted when we crank it up. Which we have read is a problem and cause the cables to break. We can turn the plate to return it to the proper position untangled, which should mean the torsion bearing are ok. Our crank is on the back on the passenger side as the camper in your video. We were wondering what the order of the cables on the plate should be? The camper in the video is marked as Fronts on the bottom and the rears on the top. This wasn't the pattern used by another owner that provided a suggestion. In your many years of experience have you found there is a set pattern for which cable goes where on the plate?
It is very important to keep the cables parallel and not twisted.
Thank you for your this amazing video. We just got a 1994 pop-up Scamper after our TT was broken into, vandalized and totaled out by insurance. Not the right time for us to buy so we opted for a inexpensive pop-up but we can't close the top front. It has a Goshen system (I think) based on RUclips but am looking for how we can close the top until we can replace the cables or winch. Can't fine a manual for this 1994 pop-up scamper either. Appreciate your video and help with what we should be looking for.
If it won't go down, then you probably have a broken or damaged cable or maybe a bent or broken part. Sorry I don't have better news.

This video was some time back. I assume you are talking about the brackets that were bent? In order to make those brackets from scratch would cost the customer hundreds of dollars. I would have to go buy the raw material and then spend time in the garage to build them and then I would be liable for their construction for ever. Does that make sense?

Is there a proper length/ tension for the cables to make sure the camper fully extend all the way up? Or is it more important that all the cables are even and it will just go up at the same rate? I feel like if you install new cables incorrectly it could easily cause over extension and they could snap again

I had lost hope trying to find the issue with the pop up I just bought. This video clear up everything for me! I can not say thank you enough. I fixed it the best I could with the old parts but am wanting to replace it to be certain everything runs smooth. Is there a parts website that you would recommend?

1996 Jayco 1207: Since I have one lift post that quick working, assuming broken cable or eye bolt that bent open, I plan to just replace all four cables. I thinking I should also replace the main pull cable and perform some maintenance on the winch. Can I crimp the main cable with a swage/ferrule? Other than lubing all the push springs, what should I do to the manual winch while I'm at it?
Yes on the swage/ferrule. It is probably 3/16 or 1/4 inch cable. I have replace quite a few of them. As far as maintenance on the winch? Just make sure it looks ok. Yes lube pusher springs. You got this Gary B
Thank you so much. I have a 1985 Coleman (Shenandoah) that has multiple damage to the body (my horses kicked a hole, I backed into something and so on) Is there a way to fix the body? There are cracks and in some spots pieces of plastic missing. The camper is restorable ( good tires, lights work, newer canvas, good gas lines and so on) And the cables work great, too.
Sure it can be fixed. You could just cover up the bad parts (cheaper option) or actually take the bad parts off and replace with new. (much more expensive option)

This may have already been answered but i didn't want to read every single comment. First of all great video and i enjoy all of your videos. A few questions. What size cable? Mine appears to be 1/8 or 5/32. It's tiny but i have a tiny camper. I have a 2001 Jayco that i inherited. It's brand new only been raised 3 times. One cable broke due to rust from a leak. How do i remove the spring? Or do i just slide cable through beside the spring? Should i go ahead and replace all of them due to age?
I take a piece of the old cable to Lowe's to make sure I get the correct size. I have other popup recable videos. I think if you watch them all, your questions will be answered.
What about a thimble at the eyebolt end of the cable to prevent kinking?

Jaycos have 3/4 and 7/8 square tubes, which size is in this one? I worry a little bit about 1/4 cable fitting the 3/4 slug and tube
I go back with the same size cable. I just upgrade the eye bolts.
@@hillbillyrv aha, I noticed in the video that you used 1/8, my searching shows jaycos used 3/32. Since you found the existing cables clamped, it's possible they are not original? Mine are 3/32, would it hurt to go to 1/8?
I know you’ve heard it before but this video was a just what we needed!! I am so thankful to have found your channel and this video. We worked on the pop up most of the day today we changed out the eyelets and now have 2 arms at 43 inches on the back end and the 2 on the front are 1 to 1.5 inches too low. Any idea how we can determine which cable goes to which raiser arm? Or is it a guessing game that would require us to raise and lower the roof with each guess to see if we got it right?
I would figure out which is which and you mark them so you can adjust them without guessing.
Have someone that wants to give me a pop up. Needs cables though. What a nightmare!!

It just depends on how many brackets and pulleys are bad. And if there is rotten floor where any of the brackets and pulleys mount.

You would have to check with your state Barbara. I would say no title needed to own or fix, just to license it for the road. Just a guess....
my camper is bigger than that one Coleman Fleetwood Niagara. I have to adjust my cables as the front posts start to lift before the rear. any ideas on how to do that lol
If it has the above floor cable system just use my videos to see how I did it. I have other popup videos too.
@@hillbillyrv than you, I am going through other videos and I haven't seen one camper like mine anywhere. Mine has the lift system that is in a compartment to the right of the main door. push button to raise and turn knob to lower it. almost like a hydraulic/cable system
