- Part B of this two-part video on modern Mexican silver pieces explores in depth the exciting prototype of modern silver bullion coin: the 1978-1980 silver "Onza". Then we'll shift into overdrive along with the Mexico Mint as they gear up and release the first true modern .999 silver troy ounce legal tender coin that started it all: The Libertad
We'll dive into the context of these early pieces, we'll look at their purity standards, their importance, and their impact on the modern bullion world they helped to create.
In this video, I mention how I was recently presented with the opportunity to rotate out of vintage Engelhard bars into an unopened roll of vintage Libertads. Check out that video here as I weigh that decision and come to a conclusion:
• Advanced Precious Meta...
And the 90% Silver for Advanced Collectors Silver Dollar video where I talk about "VAMs":
• 90% Silver for Advance...
Just started buying libertads this year. Bought my first 5 ounce libertad and I was hooked. So far I have bought 5 5 ouncers, 5 2 ouncers, 3 1 ouncers and 4 1/2 ouncers. The kilo is a crazy price. I actually sold some of my undesirable silver and traded up for the libertads. I will definitely have to have some proof versions.
Whoa! That's a lot of libertads!
Started buying Libertads this year myself. Bought proofs for all the mintages this year except the 2023 2 and 5 oz
Just bought my first "graded" 1979 Mexican Mo Onza PCGS MS66. The toning is absolutely stunning. I've got tons of Mexican silver raw... but now, I've started collecting various graded Mexican silver to add to the graded Libertads I already have. Mexico silver is so cool. There's a certain mystique about it. When I think of lost treasure chests, I think Mexican silver. I will continue to add Mex silver to my stacking and collecting for as long as I'm able.
THANKS FOR THE INFO, brother!
Congrats! I think these have long term potential, too. And I agree about the mystique of Mexican silver. There's just something about it!
💯 on the info/ history of Libertad
Love my Mexican vintage, your video was incredibly informative, interesting, and entertaining. Thanks for sharing !!
Great info boss! Thanks!
These coins are so beautiful wow. Awesome stack!
I really appreciate it. Anyone can do it, it just takes time :)
Great content
Another great video!
Just to add, and correct me if I’m wrong…:
1982 Libertads actually didn’t come out until 84
91 libertad had 2 types. Type 2 being much more rare.
99 libertad had a mule with the wrong obverse. Pretty rare.
Edited for spelling….
Thank you! Yes, I think you are correct about the delay. But I seemed to recall it was mid- to late 1983. Long time ago, so I'm probably wrong. Some really fascinating types with the Libertad series. I'm afraid to get too far into the types and overstrikes and doubling because that would shift me from "stacker" to "collector" of these pieces. And I like the Mexican bullion pieces too much as a stacking vehicle to get too deep into collecting them!
very informative, thanx Whyrecross
Thanks!
Professor WhyteCross,, thanks for the lesson!
Shucks. Thank YOU for watching!
Hi WhyteCross Precious Metals and Numismatics! I've subscribed to your channel! Nice video content! 😎
Hey thanks! Love your encouraging the next generation!
Great information
Thanks for watching!
Good topic and options. Liked and sub’d.
Thanks! Really appreciate it!!
Just ordered 3 1985 Onza/Libertads for my collection today!
Awesome! How can you not like the older libertads?
Wow you have a lot of Mexican Silver coins and rounds keep on stacking them
Those vintage coin tubes may be scarce, but there are 43mm coin tubes readily available if you google it. Alternatively, perhaps a tube designed for coins in capsules would work as well.
Great! If you've got a link please share!
You remind me of SilverfishVT. Anyways, 10/10 content. I subbed.
Hey that's neat. I appreciate the comments and the sub!!
Like the older Mexican silver
Me too! Big handfuls!
Are you going to ever open those "Shotgun" wrapped rolls ?
Each coin could be very valuable !
No. Alone the coins are "worth" maybe $40 each. In the roll, unopened, they sell for $60 to $70 each--sometimes more. And every day, another roll gets broken open (attrition), leaving fewer and fewer unopened rolls.
I'd rather have one Libertad shotgun roll and one Engelhard 10oz bar in its original flip than two of each.😉
Great presentation about Mexican silver coinage! Years ago, I purchased a 1986 roll of Libertads ; it came in its original box with the tube roll inside. The box is worn, but is complete. I've left it as I got it. Opening the box to look at roll more closely, seemed like sacrilege, in a way. I have had it about 21 years. What would a unopened box & roll be worth as opposed to 20 BU Libertads in a modern tube? Curious!
P.S. I think the older Winged Victory is the more beautiful rendition!
Hey that's very cool! I don't know if I've ever seen any kind of original box for a Libertad roll. Is it a shipping/cardboard box, or is it more of a presentation type box? Sealed rolls of 1986 libertads have sold recently on eBay for $700 to $730--or about $35 for each coin. If the box is interesting, made of wood, etc. and is actually a mint box, I would guess it would add another $50 to $100.
I was lucky to add a roll of 84s to my stack 😊
That's AWESOME. And in just a few months, they'll be 40 YEARS OLD!
wow, i am searching for one too
That 69 dcam is wild!
Crazy, right?
I see that there is a PCGS 69DCAM on ebay right now:

In todays spot, what would you consider a good price for the onza?
It's really dependent on where you are. If I can find nice uncirculated examples for less than $5 over spot, I'd probably buy them.
1949 or 1978,1978, 1980 onza would you suggest purchasing.
I was looking at them Friday night.
As a collector maybe a few of each ?
Funny you should ask. In my follow up video (Stacking Mexican Silver: WhyteCross' Choice) I'll talk about my 5 top picks from the entire Stacking Mexican series. Hint: One of them is the Onza, and I'll talk about why I think two of those dates are the best :)
Not sure this will get a response but I am hopeful. I have various Libertad's and all but one of them ring when they are pinged. I just recently bought a 1993 1OnZa it is marked LeY .999, it weighs correctly is not magnetic but does react as if it is diamagnetic but it does not ring when pinged. I bought it from a reputable online dealer who has offered to take it back but 1993 is one of my children's birth year and I would like to keep it for them. Is it common for that year to not ring when pinged? I do not own or know anyone who does own a Sigma Tester and usually am comfortable with making sure they weigh correctly, ping correctly and react as if diamagnetic. But this one not pinging makes me uncomfortable because I do not have a known good 1993 to test it against. I would appreciate it so much if this does get a response.
Hey @mafiawarsdad! Glad you're here. I see every comment and I try to respond if I can!
I don't know of any counterfeit 1993 libertads. Doesn't mean they don't exist. But rather than shell out the $1000+ for a sigma, you might try a few other things. First, if the other libertads you have are the same style (they changed the style in 1996), compare the one that doesn't ping to one that does: GENTLY stack one on top of the other. You should be able to feel any difference in diameter with your fingers. If there is little to no difference, are they the same thickness? Finally, you can compare the weight. If you don't have a digital scale, check Amazon for a scale that measures to .01 grams (1/100th of a gram). There are several on sale right now for $10 or less. The 1993 libertad should weigh 31.1 grams. If it is the same diameter, thickness, and weight as the others, then there is a very good chance it is real. Let me know your results!
Thanks for the prompt reply! The coin matches the expected weight, thickness, and width. It also exhibits the expected diamagnetic properties. The only anomaly is the lack of a ringing sound when pinged.
Ideally, I'd compare it to a verified 1993 Mexican coin, particularly from the same mintage series, to see if the sound is consistent. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate one yet.
Luckily, I found someone in the area with a Sigma machine, and I'll be using it later this week for definitive testing. I'll definitely post back here with an update, especially if the coin is confirmed genuine despite the lack of pinging sound.
Thanks,
David Metcalf
Hey, do you know how much a 2 Onzas Piedra de los Soles coin from 1993 is worth?
I've never had one myself. Mexico released several similar series of these smaller than and larger than a troy ounce pieces in the 1990s, IIRC. But I see that one of the 1993 2 ounce pieces in NGC PF68 cameo is on eBay right now for $474.95.
If the Thaler was gold, that purity would be 20K.
True (or really close to it). Strange how we don't ever see 20K gold in anything. 24K, 22K, then down to 18K. Great observation!
Doh just missed it 😖
Lol. No worries!
Silver is running out forever By 2032 ,China's Underground silver Deposit will be fully depleted, leading to resource extinction. 9 years of silver left in China.
By 2026 Mexico silver mining & reserves will be exhusted forever. By 2045 United States of America silver will be exhusted & reserves to.
And Chile reserves will be run out by 2039 Poland silver reserves will run out by 2073 Peru silver reserves will run out by 2049
But in history when one resource has become exhausted, another is found with similar or sometimes even better attributes. If silver mines run out, it would be just as logical to think that would cause the price of silver to collapse--because it will no longer be used or in demand--than to assume that the price of silver will skyrocket. I choose to continue my same course of action: Long, stable acquisition of all precious metals as one part of my portfolio.
the most over rated and over priced bullion coin you can buy i stay well clear of them
Really high premiums right now for sure. But what if you were to find them with a low premium? So much of buying well is being in the right place at the right time.
