If you want an April Fools suggestion, try the Grumman Goose’s long lost brother: The Spruce Goose. I think you’d do it y right.

I was thinking about a joke video on April fools. Spruce Goose is a good idea

You mention averaging your data from a small number of data points in this goose video. Certainly that problem would be worse for a spruce goose.

What about the Grumman Goose's little sister, the Grumman Gosling? Oh wait, that wouldn't be a joke. It's a real thing.

Flew on these as a kid between Prince Rupert and The Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) in British Columbia in the late 1970s.
Being 8-9 years old, I always ran to be the first on board. As there was only one pilot, it meant the co-pilot seat was up for grabs! 😎

Freshwater Air out of DLG operates 2 of these bad boys. They shuttle hunters/anglers/and rafters for DIY trips and are an air taxi service/cargo carrier for some of the fishing lodges around the area.

I got to fly on both of them a couple years ago! I traded some work loading them full of alcohol and groceries in exchange for a ride in the copilot seat.

Thanks for this video. You've really put me in my place... I was considering selling my house and buying one and turning it into a flying houseboat. I'm not sure what "annual" is or if I'd need it, but I'd never be able to afford it. I wouldn't be doing a hangar though, cuz I'd be mooring at marinas and occasionally flying to the next lake... But at that fuel consumption, I'd probably have to hire out to charter flights just to "move house".
Hmm, maybe I could give it a Canadair CL-215 paint job and start up a charter flight company called Higher for Hire...
    ...
    ...
    NAH!

I know of someone locally who regularly flies a Mallard, I hear first and then see it about 5 timers per year over my area alone. Goose used to be one of the few ways to fly from mainland NW Canada to the Queen Charlotte Islands. (now: Haida Gwaii) In 1979 that's how we got to Graham island from Prince Rupert. I loved every second. A few years later was a TV show I fell in love with: Tales of the Gold Monkey. Given their age, there is no doubt it would be a serious problem for any normal enthusiast.

He keeps referring to the quest Kodiak assessment grand care Van but if we're talking about somebody that wants to move stuff sure it would be a lot more practical to have a cat grand caravan or a Kodiak but at the same time a Kodiak brand new is 2.5 million dollars basedollars base not even including the floats and an older model Kodiak is still in the range of like 2 million on floats so we're talking at 1.5 million dollar price difference easy

    • @CompleteWalkaround
      @CompleteWalkaround  2 года назад +1

It's true. Commercial operators will pretty well always lease a caravan or Kodiak over buying. So purchase price isn't as huge an issue. If you are operating commercially, and take dispatch rate into consideration, the goose becomes very expensive, since you'd need half a dozen to match the dispatch of a new Kodiak :) Anyway, It's true that the goose is cheaper to buy and operate then those modern competitors. But truth be told, they do out perform the goose and they ready to work most days while our friend the goose is waiting for replacement parts to be fabricated from scratch. Thanks for watching and commenting!

The short endurance/range of these things is shocking for what it is. it was literally designed to fly people from new york city to upstate new york, and thats it.
These will fly for about 2.5 hours. In a cessna 152 you can easily stay aloft for 4. Some as long as 8 with larger tanks and careful management ( but you're going to be very tired). So this giant radial plane designed for 1930s millionares having the legs basically of an ultralight is shocking to me. You look at it and it brings to mind giant '30s seaplanes with endurance measured in days, not hours.
There is no doubt that if you have one of these you're what we call in the buisiness "F**ing cool". Like having a dodge viper when a BMW M5 would be just as fast and more practical. But nobody marries a wife becuase they are practical and easy to wipe down.
