Since no one ever reads descriptions, I will put this here as well:

Very well done in so many ways! History, technology, and the fact that EM takes enough pride in the system that they’re restoring some of the original Thunderbolts (with 1 to be on display). The fact that they refer to the original sirens by name is the cherry on top!
Glad to see Lisa covering this one too, Lisa (KSN) and Jay (KAKE) are fantastic.

Are you a Wichita native? If you are do you have any old recordings from there? I've seen you around and you always struck me as someone who's been in the community for eons.

@@TheSirenSeeker I’m from Ohio, but I’ve been out in Wichita a few times. I work from home and my wife and I have Wichita on a short list of places we’re looking at buying a house. It’s one of the few places where you can still get something decent for your money, it has everything we have here but close enough to KC and Dallas (also on the list) that you can get away for activities, and you still have people that are “Midwest-nice” that we don’t really have anymore in Columbus, OH.
I follow Lisa and Jay and several other meteorologists and chasers in the Midwest and south on social media to stay in the loop on severe weather and chasing. Not sure how they’re perceived locally, but they really seem to know their market and do a decent job of interpreting and translating what’s happen on the radar and with forecasting.
I’ve been loosely around the “siren community” since roughly 2000. I’ve done a few siren recordings, got to meet some interesting people in the industry and government and share that over the years, but work, family and kids have taken up most of my time.

Makes me so happy to hear them call the sirens by their actual name. Can't wait until the jailbars are back up.

So was Wichita the birthplace of the “tornado siren” then? Is that what they’re saying at 2:20?

That's really cool for KSN to refer to the Thunderbolts by their name and explained the history of how sirens came about. Glad they are refurbishing the remaining 4 Thunderbolts.
I wish we had them more throughout Florida. We get a lot of severe weather and apparently, we have the second highest number of tornadoes seen in a year.
To me, siren technology is not outdated. But merely another necessary piece of the puzzle to mass notification. Here in Florida, only a handful of municipalities (that I am aware of) have tornado sirens. But my area doesn't. We've been under a tornado warning several times since I have lived here and if I was away from my TV, phone, or weather radio, I wouldn't have known. And yes, I am sometimes away from all of that when I am outside working or I am out playing paintball. Having a siren would be comforting.

Yeah we took down those alarm thingies 30 years ago. We use mobile phone alerts now, sirens are outdated.
