This is purely a classic. I watched this ALL the time in 2016 back when I was 9-10. I absolutely love this video and it’s honestly better than most siren videos nowadays. Thank you for making this video. I’ve always loved it and I’ll never stop loving this.

I remember watching this a million times a day when I was about 4-5-6, and now I'm 14 about to turn 15 and start driving, time sure does fly. Probably wouldn't be where I am today without this :)

i never thought i'd be able to tell the brand of a tornado siren by the sound, much less know the different brands, but that is indeed a thunderbolt i hear. there's one right next to my old high school

Yes, in August of 2010 a morning thunderstorm with 80 mph winds knocked over the old t-bolt as well as causing moderate damage across the city and county. Within a couple of weeks, this one was up and working.
The Panasonic HDC-TM 700 uses 3-1/4" CMOS sensors. The clip was shot at 1920x1080,60p which is the highest resolution for the unit. Though not as clear as CCD sensors, it produces near-broadcast quality pictures. Panasonic stopped producing this model after a year, but similar models are available.

They test the sirens near me at 10am on the first Tuesday of every month. I've never actually paid attention to what brand/model they are. One of them is less than a mile from my house, right next to one of the middle schools. I'll have to check it out sometime :)
Great video! I hate how the current 2001 models have pitch varies due to alignment problems with the collector rings. I like the T-bolts in the background too.

That’s the tornado siren I have in my town, it’s in front of a really old play ground that gives me the creeps I swear I saw the seesaw move once.

Yes, as flat as central Kansas is and as calm as the day was, sound travels great distances. You are hearing many sirens being tested at once. This was the last one to blow. It replaced a Thunderbolt 100T which was blown down in 80 mph winds from a high precipitation supercell on August 10, 2009.

We have (I believe) 3 of these. One at the high school, one by the water tower and one by WalMart.
This was the first video I ever watched shortly after I became into sirens. Also that thunderbolt 1000T ambience before this 130 sounds is epic! I heard one on chopper level 3 and one on level 4. Also some 2001-SRNs

Video is great but this particular siren (Federal Signal 2001-130 AC/DC) is loathed by most of us siren enthusiasts. The 2001 is ok to me.

+SixR Are you getting electro-mechanical mixed up with electronic sirens? Electro-mechanical is the same as mechanical, it just means they run on electricity.

All sirens test on the first Saturday on every single month.
Thanks, yes the thing was WAY louder than anticipated, producing distortion even with a 9 db pad on the stereo mic input. Some audio peak reduction was needed to even out the track for posting, and you will notice that the video was shot in two days. The usual test day having been cancelled due to an approaching blizzard which left 11 inches of snow over the following 24 hours. Temperatures in the 60's melted most of it by the next Monday. We may have a busy storm season in Kansas! Stay tuned...

I'm a Salinan myself--we have a whole bunch of tbolts still in service, with the exception of quite a few 2001s.
It's a Federal Signal 2001-130, although it's obvious since it's written on the box below the head of the siren.

Where I live, they test these things on the first Friday of every month at 11:00am.

Today is the ten-year anniversary of this civil defense siren video, now at 769,010 views! It starts on the first day I'd planned to film it and all of the sirens are heard in the distance. This one did not work that day. I came back the next month and that's where the fade to this siren sounding comes in. This machine was removed a couple of years ago as all of the siren system was changed. At the time I shot it, I had no idea that there were so many "siren fans" out there! People who know which machines are which and the details of construction. But, they - you all - found this video in large numbers and some even look back on it with fond childhood memories.

Sirens here are tested at 4:30 p.m. on the first Monday of the month. Tests are cancelled if cloud weather might confuse citizens.
what if on test day theirs a tornado coming then what people are going to be like its only a test
they only test on fair weather days at the predetermined time. if theres any poor weather that day they cancel it and do it the next day at the regular time

Thanks Dylan! Yes, I will do more videos of Salina's sirens as well as shoot storms. This was a replacement for a downed T-Bolt, but I don't know if they will replace more.

Thanks Charlie! This video was shot on a Panasonic HDC-TM700. The sound was captured using an audio-technica Pro 24-CM stereo condenser microphone. The raw file is 1920/1080 at 60fps progressive scan. I used a fluid head tripod. NLE was done with Sony Vegas Platinum Pro 9.
