Helpful look and helpful comments here on the whole. As a casual user trying to get away from paying for cloud storage, I think this looks like the best option to save in the long run. I'm thinking that the EX2 Ultra and two 8TB sata's would be a good safeguard to protect photos and videos and allow storage for long enough to come out ahead with $$$.
Hi! Access to WD My cloud NAS (white) is no longer available OUTSIDE my home because I can't update to OS 5. If I replace NOW it with EX2 for example, I see that WD support ends in 2026! So I'd have the same problem in 2 years? Do I have to wait until 2026 to buy a new version Nas in order to have 8-10 years valid support and therefore access to the NAS OUTSIDE my home? Is the same problem with Synology support Nas? Time limited and then buy new (400€?). Thanks :-(
OK - I've had this unit for a couple of weeks fitted with 2 x 8TB IronWolf Pro NAS Drives. It's a good unit and easy to setup and use BUT - why OH WHY didn't they cool it better. Running as stock my HDDs were around 50 Deg Celsius - sometimes a little higher. Bought and placed a £15 USB fan on the top (with 3 speed settings) and the temps have dropped right down to the Mid/Early 30s - it's insane that for such a low cost better ventilation isn't provided. That aside it's a good NAS.
@@alanlebec9564 AC Invinity running off a phone charger - it can also be powered from the NAS's USB but I've had some red light issues on HDD1 & am trying to minimise any stress on the unit. In hindsight I should have bought Synology.

Can you tell me what is the output voltage and amps on the transformer plug? I need to get a new power supply but don’t have the old power supply anymore
@@williamsachs436 thanks I actually found a page on the western digital webpage after a bit of digging(not easy to find much on google anymore), it showed how many watts of power depends on the installed storage. I’ll just put the numbers here is anyone else needs to know.. 36W for 4TB, 8TB, 12TB capacity - (12V x 3A = 36W) 48W for 0TB, 16TB capacity and above - (12V x 4A = 48W)
I've had this NAS for a few months now - it is fitted with 2 Seagate Iron Wolf Pro 8tb HDD. I've had some issues with red lights on HD1 - I even RMA'd a HDD becuase I thought it was faulty - I have since swapped the HDDs over and so the NAS was reporting all three HDDs as being faulty - something wasn't quite right. I even reconfigured the RAID to mirror as I didn't want a sudden failure. Now I'd almost resigned myself to buying a Synology and junking the WD when a firmware update came through - this (touches wood) appears to have sorted out the unit. Note that WD support were pretty useless but I did find some help on the forums. I still have an external fan running to keep the temps down but at the end of the day I shouldn't need to - it's a basic storage device which allows multiple users to access it and I fail to understand why I've had so many problems with it. All I do is store photos/music and run Plex which it just about manages.
I had a similar experience and after the first RMA everything so far is working well. I have my figures crossed because the level of support wd provides is lacking.
Question: I have the My Cloud Home version, and it sucks. It might be great for sharing photos or PDFs, but that's it. I have a music studio, and I need to be able to share complete DAW sessions (think of it as a folder with many files of many types within it) between three computers, as well as be able to access them remotely and download in case there's a problem. I really just want to treat it like any other hard drive, just one that's connected via the network or the internet instead of a USB cable. Will this drive - and its subsequent operating system - be able to handle that? Thanks!
It does , it totally does. For myself I have hundreds of torrents that seed and leach from the system itself. I usually dump all my video files onto the cloud and pull them as needed while editing , works really well on a lan connection.
Great video review! I’ve heard WD dropped support for this specific NAS and the user now has to pay to access files using a subscription based service. I wanted to confirm if that’s true from your perspective using it.
You don’t have to pay nothing to access your data. In case remote access is no longer available by WD, you can always access your data within your LAN.
Yes you can but you have to select the files and folders you want to be backed up, it’s not as easy as iCloud but you can manage it with some insight. Just get the software that come with it and follow the instructions.
hey, do you know if the files can be accessible remotely, from anywhere like Google Drive? and if yes, do you have to pay any fee per month to have that offering enabled?
@@keshathome is it not limited by the internet speed? My current router has a usb port, so whenever I try downloading files from the usb drive, the transfer speed seems to be limited to the internet speed even if the drive itself is capable to transfering at much higher speeds.
Check where your device is plugged in. Mine was plugged into the router and it was doing the same as yours. However, I have a network switch to provide additional plug in points for my laptops. I plugged the drive into the network switch, hit refresh and the page loaded up.
I was considering this but read the speeds are truly ridiculous slow! In todays world with UHD content managing storage and backing up files becomes a day long mission. I notice you never did any speed tests.
Very well, every time it updates it continues to work. Only once it had some issues for about 48 hours but WD sent me an email about the outage they were working on.
