The designers and writers for the game really had a good story arc in mind with this. Set up for the immediate sequel with the end, but also reference the glyphs that are the centrepiece of Thief: Deadly Shadows. From a narrative perspective this series of 3 games was crafted excellently
There's so much brilliant foreshadowing in this cutscene. Note that the statue is holding a cog at 0:10 (a Mechanist symbol). The man in the forge at 2:10 seems to be making those security cameras that appear in the sequel, as well. I never noticed that until just now. "Beware the dawn of the Metal Age" - Gah, gives me goosebumps every time.
- So you think you have won? - I think I got my eye back. - Yet, still. You are blind. - If you haven't noticed I just saved the world, yourself included. As a person who is working in game development industry and never managed to work on a title close to this. This video hurts me. Kudos guys.
Back in these days, getting a cut-scene of this quality was a rare, but satisfying treat, nowadays, you can take a piss in a game and get a frekin cut-scene, there's just no magic to it anymore!
sure new games have cutscenes that look like movies. don't get me wrong (except mass effect) but none of them have come close to telling this much of a story in 3 minutes. none of them. nowadays people rely too much on cliches and tropes and outright boring or extensive dialogue but this game kept it simple. have us the story and gave us time to react to what we were seeing and hearing: constantine hiring garrett all along, constantine being the trickster, the mechanical eye reveal at the end, and the works. making a movie like this would certainly be different than other movies but people would love how the story retains mystery and gives you little spoonfuls at a time to build up to a proper and climactic scene
When I play a game, I want it to be a gaming experience. Games that try to be like “films” ultimately are creatively hollow. The reason this game has aged so well is because the designers were focused on making a game, and not trying to create IP to get hired to make a shitty film adaptation that most AAA studio people are trying to do now
"You cannot run from life as you did from us... Life has a way of finding you" Such excellent quotes. I used to like the Keepers until Deadly Shadows revealed them as what they always was: secretive, arrogant scholars with no true interest in the wellbeing of the City, but in the maintenance of their freaking Balance. The only Keeper I liked was Artemus. Shame Gamall killed him. D.R.
@@Spr1ggan87 actually during of development of Thief: Deadly Shadows were working many developers from Looking Glass, so you're wrong (for example Terri Brosius was still a story writer). A third game of this brilliant trilogy shows that even Keepers are humans and could reach an extreme in saving of a balance, like Trickster in his chaos or Karras in Builder's teachings. Sometimes policy of non-intervention can destroy everything and Garrett, a true Keeper, knew it.
Only took me 10 years, but I just now finished Thief Gold for the first time ever! Bought it when it came out, tried many times over the years. Always loved it, just never finished it. And THEN, I defeat the trickster, the final cutscene starts, and I have to check something in the other room, so I hit 'pause' on the keyboard--yeah that took me back to the menu. Rather than reload a save, I came here to watch it. TEN YEARS! Woot! Best game ever!
The very 1st pc game my brother and i bought. He had me choose between this and baldurs gate 1, and i chose this. We were not disappointed. 😆😆😆 This game was our entry to PC gaming. And from here we got into might & magic 6, myth 1 & 2, planescape:torment, icewind dale/baldurs gate 2, fallout 1 & 2, Nox, LoK soul reaver, Diablo 2, Septerra Core, Neverwinter... Good times. Edit:forgot to add morrowind in the list. Haha
It has been over 20 years since I played this game so many hours (Thief I and II are states of art for in that years, other ones in the series are literally crap in my opinion) and I have a weird memory about it. I was playing this game with one of my friends and after that we were going out to play in the streets with other friends. A strange safe feeling was with me when the evening happens. And when a car passes as its lights on me, I was trying to find a dark place to sit or chat with my friends. I didn't wanted to talk it with my friend I played the game. In the least he would mostly thought I am crazy but one time I decided to tell about it. It seemed I wasn't the only one that felt the same way :) He was thinking like I was and he didn't want to talk about it. I remember we laughed and talked a lot about this experience. Maybe one of you had it as well.
In thief 1 red spiders web you and spit stuff in your face. And while you're jumping around like a spastic rabbitt, trying to unweb and dodge spit, you receive a swarm of bees in the face, courtesy of a bugbeast. And also zombies, lots of them... Thief 1 was hardcore.
One day, people will just realize, " wait this is really good..." and this masterpiece will never be forgotten, its art.Its incredible how many kids think deadly shadows started it all. Gamers nowadays should just be injected with thief to understand why it rocks! I swear, if eidos makes another thief game dumbed down like deadly shadows...
Ooooph! This comment about Deadly Shadows from 12 years ago feels very raw, considering the Thief 4 they managed to make afterwards. I still think Thief 3 was fairly true and tight to the original experience. Thief 4 on the other hand, really lost the feel, wrong tone, no humour, wonky Garrett. Basically a wasted opportunity. (Admittedly, a Thief game is a hard game to make!) I wonder if Eidos will ever do a Thief 5. And more importantly, whether there will ever be another official Thief game that gets the whole world and tone right, ever again???
With a sound speaker system (say 5.1 EAX speakers and soundcard, who can ever forget the first time they played the Haunted Cathedral level. Never has both the sounds of those predatory Haunts and ghosts ever been as frightening... to the point of searching frantically for every shadow to hide, every footstep you make that won't be overheard, and every nagging second of picking locks before the undead catch up to you.
How did they cram so much greatness into one game? The gameplay, the atmosphere- which only Bioshock has ever approached, the incredible cutscenes... What a work of art.
as gaming graphics improved the stories have suffered greatly. when this game was made they didn't have awesome graphics for cutscenes we get nowadays so they did what they could and this was the product, better story, beautiful artwork and excellent actors
One of the best ending in video game history. Masterpiece. Music at the beginning is amazing, touches soul 🤩 ,, Tell'em Garrett is done!" - brilliant 🤩
A thousand thanks to you that put this one up! The thief series always had the most atmospherical and well done cut scenes to a game ever. And this one is my favorite. As Coffeeintheface said earlier, the music to this scene is incredible.
Damn, this video is making me nostalgic. Its almost ten years now since i completed this game for the first time. It has followed me through three pc's since then, always on the harddrive ready to be played whenever i need my taffing fix... :P
@skittles25 Er, they also made the original Deus Ex. I'm not denying that there were some birthing pains as the PC and console markets started to merge, but I don't think you can fault the developers for that - they did their best with what they were given at the time.
Well, I played it in the standard difficulty and it wasn't easy, but definitely not impossible. If it's the first time you play it, it might take a bit of time to get used to the gamestyle and to realise of all the possibilities you have. More than once I had to repeat parts of the missions... I think there are about 13 missions. Give it a chance and don't let the graphics prevent you from enjoying it. It might not look like much in the beginning but it gets better and better.
i fucking love it, the ending of the level where you just easily replace the eye, eh not so much, wish there was more of a challenge there seeing as most of the game is a challenge to get tho like my god XD still damn good, and as someone who wants to make a stealth game its super cool seeing one off the pinoeers [including tenchu too] is really cool
when i played the demo of this game for the first time 8 years ago i was like..oh my god...its feels so real...i was at the edge of the seat everytime i played it...yesterday i saw my cousin playing thief 3...i swear the game has been spoilt...hope next thief will again deliver the same experience of thief 1 with better graphics and physics...
Hehe The Trickster, The Leafy Lord, The Woodsie One bes never downs, whoevers fighters Him! You cityman just thinksie Him bes can looses... Manfool!! :)
I played the original Deus Ex and yet I still really liked Invisible War. It's by no means a perfect a sequel but it's a really good game. This is just my opinion though
23 years later and I still cannot get over this game.
same, amazing trilogy, sucks nothing similar since. Really creepy dark age with folk lore, prophecies, believable magic etc.
This game is a milestone in videogame history, nothing to get over.
And you are not alone my friend
I just finished my 4th playthrough 26 years later, milestone for real
So many fan missions for it, including the amazing "The Black Parade" that came out at the end of 2023.
One of the most badass ending scenes in video game history
Garrett: Tell them I'm through, I'm done, I've had enough!
Keeper: So nothing new?
The designers and writers for the game really had a good story arc in mind with this. Set up for the immediate sequel with the end, but also reference the glyphs that are the centrepiece of Thief: Deadly Shadows.
From a narrative perspective this series of 3 games was crafted excellently
The music theme sets the tone perfectly, games were different back in the days..
And the eye was a gift from Hammerites, made by none other than brother Karras, who would later split with Hammerites
"The man in the forge at 2:10 seems to be making those security cameras"
Blessed is the forge of The Builder!
God, it still turns 39-y.o. me into 14-year-old-kid. Nothing has changed)
Same friend
35 here and still remember when i was a teen playing it ,love it nothing has changed

Its been 21 years and still cant forget this game and how i jump scared with my friends while playing it .
A perfect ending to a perfect game.
It's ending of 2021. December 17. But I can't cut this game out of my life 😢😢
Beware the dawn of the metal age....

how did we fall so far...
from weak people
i love the music to this scene....so haunting, especially with the dark snowy backdrop
Best atmosphere and use of sound in any game. Ever.
Just beat it for the 1,000th time. Still never gets old.

I agree with him! Thief was one of the most innovative games of its time... even the sound mechanics and gameplay hold up well to this day.
the music here is so haunting and beautiful; mixes beautifully with the dark nowy scenery
just,perfect.
Just finish this masterpiece! So great!
The main theme to this game is certainly very crisp.
the last part of the ending is just epic...never get bored of that..
One of the best games ever ... I totally love the art and the dark fantasy world they created ...
I just finished this game... Amazing! And the ending is very good, the music especially. I love the style of the cutscenes and the sound design.
Such a gem of a game! I'm gonna dig in some boxes, find my copy and play it. For the 7th time i think ^^

Writing and voice acting are also top notch. And then there's Eric Brosius' music...
System Shock 2 tho
One of the best ending in video game history. Masterpiece. Music at the beginning is amazing, touches soul 🤩 ,, Tell'em Garrett is done!" - brilliant 🤩

Best game-ending video ever.
Thanks for posting.
It's one of the best games I've ever played . Gone are the days they made a story like this......
Damn, this video is making me nostalgic. Its almost ten years now since i completed this game for the first time. It has followed me through three pc's since then, always on the harddrive ready to be played whenever i need my taffing fix... :P
that keeper is like that kid that whenever you correct him he finds some bullshit reason to explain he meant it all along
It's one of the best games I've ever played. Gone are the days when they made a good game.....
what a masterpiece. i wish i was a heavier pc gamer back in the day.

@skittles25 Er, they also made the original Deus Ex. I'm not denying that there were some birthing pains as the PC and console markets started to merge, but I don't think you can fault the developers for that - they did their best with what they were given at the time.

i fucking love it, the ending of the level where you just easily replace the eye, eh not so much, wish there was more of a challenge there seeing as most of the game is a challenge to get tho like my god XD still damn good, and as someone who wants to make a stealth game its super cool seeing one off the pinoeers [including tenchu too] is really cool
one of the best fames ever by far... and quit dissing the graphics... it's old and it did'nt matter much anyway...

I love thief.

You cityman just thinksie Him bes can looses... Manfool!!
:)
i would love it if thief 3 was the same graphics as 1 and 2, if you know what i mean... its like the wrong feel
Man, the ending of Thief 2 is so lame compared to this.
Very intresting can you tell me where you found about the trickster or did you just hear about it ?
Grrrreat!
do you think they will make a thief 4? Thief 3 was good, but thief 2 just was awsome, I don't know why thief 2 was so good...
I just finished Deadly shadows but i never played dark project befor is it worth it ?
Ed Bonnici yesss!!! It's different gameplay though... Slightly primitive but wonderful story
+Sadin15
I think you're a little too late
Garrett made it... ;-)
What they always "were", sorry, xDDD. D.R.
I don't get it, why do you hate deadly shadows so much?

He's probably talking about Thief: Deadly Shadows.
HySonic Yea he is. And probably thinks invisible war was good is more then likely he never played the orginal Deus X
I played the original Deus Ex and yet I still really liked Invisible War. It's by no means a perfect a sequel but it's a really good game. This is just my opinion though
