My biggest fear walking into this movie was "How are they going to make Beria funny?" And I gotta give this movie credit; they managed to make him funny whilst at the same time not shying away from what a monster he was.

"Shoot her before him but make sure he sees it, shoot him take him to his church and dump him in the pulpit, the rest I leave up to you."
Honestly Steve Buscemi was so good as Khrushchev in _The Death of Stalin_ that I now just want a bigger biopic of Khrushchev starring Steve Buscemi lol
and before Beria, there was Yezhov, who was even more cruel and sadistic and homicidal-without-brakes-at-all - and pansexual - and enjoying himself (and handsome like a Hollywood actor, btw) - until the newcomer Beria (and remember his fate too?) did to him... what he himself did to the guy who yet previously occupied this position, Yahoda, who was ... you got it, it's funny ain't it?
I love how Nikita was portrayed by Steve: the clown of the group, but ended up to be a master political player who managed to outmaneuver Stalin's monster.
From a historical perspective, Khrushchev is hard to pin down. It's reasonably common knowledge that Stalin and others used to make fun of and prank him. You would be forgiven for thinking that Khr was merely a play toy. But he not only won the post-Stalin power struggle, he did it so covertly that Lavrenti Beria never knew what hit him.
Nixer Doyle I thought Bob Hoskins did a better job in Enemies at the Gate in portraying NK even down to the appearance. I dont think Steve Buscemi really was as convincing in the role.
@@Tridhos As he was not really supposed to deliver a historic portrayal, just a character based on a graphic novel ( French BD ) who "happened" to be a historical figure as well, I think while understanding your argument, he actually fit the idea perfectly.

Steve Buscemi has performed some outstanding roles. He was brilliant in Death of Stalin, even though Jason Isaacs had the greatest scenery-chewing lines. It was great to see him give props to Tarantino for ensuring that actors received name recognition. But the thing that impresses me the most about him is that, on 9/11, he went to the fire house where he worked previously as a firefighter, and suited up. Legend.

After a while, he was a just another guy coming in for lunch and the staff loved him for it.
A release this early in the year? From IFC, who doesn't have the money for campaigning (Boyhood was a special case of capturing lightning in a bottle)? It got dumped, sorry to say. It's a magnificent movie, though. The Oscars only go for what pays the most in campaign money, but they aren't the arbiters of taste. Not my taste anyway.

Yes, it's been banned, which is not good. But after 5 seconds of googling I found this movie on the internet. We have our ways. :) Of course we know who you are, Stephen, I hope you'll come to Russia (especially Moscow) again!
Александра Бобкова Can you try to explain why "Death of Stalin" is banned from cinemas in Russia? It is a satirical movie about a certain period in the Soviet Union. What is so upsetting to the current political regime in Russia that they feel the need to ban it from today's public? Are the characters depicted in this movie all heros and saints of the Soviet Union (including Stalin), not to be criticised or laughed at at all, especially in a foreign made film? Or what is the reasoning behind this censorship?
I can try. Stalin is still very popular in Russia (for instance, there was a project "Name of Russia" on TV, its purpose was to elect the most notable personality in Russian history, Stalin came in third place). The culture minister Medinsky didn’t like the movie because of the “extremism”. That’s problematic, because it’s not clear what it is, anything could be extremism. Medinsky said that a lot of older people will see it as an insult to Soviet past. He saw it this way for sure. Also a bunch of Stalin’s fans are now presidential candidates (the election will be very soon, in two weeks). And they are very proud of their views. One of them said that Stalin was the best political leader of the 20th century. Yes, there were repressions, but my father had a chance to get an education and made some money. he said. Sadly, many people really think that country’s greatness is more important than people’s lives. So, to sum up, some Russian politicians can’t deal with satire and get offended real fast.
Александра Бобкова Thanks for the reply and the insights. As a German who has been confronted with the crimes of the Nazi dictatorship and the Communist regime in East Germany since his childhood, which was taught repeatedly in schools and discussed in the media, I find it simply appalling that Stalin and his regime are still so glorified in Russia. His only merit was to end the Nazi war of annihilation. However, this cannot mean that Stalin's illegal cleansing and mass murder of his own population, before and after the Second World War, is completely ignored and that this figure of contemporary history is so uncritically revered as an exemplary character. I am really concerned about the future of Europe and the world that the renewed cult about Stalin's leadership is not only being used and protected by Putin, but that the Russian people seem to continue to support this despite better knowledge.
+ArmAd Spengler That was an OK answer above BUT… history is written by the victors and USSR has failed. Westerners like you and West-fanboys seem be very fond of propaganda dictated by their oligarchical masters through media which is largely owned by same conglomerates, even "local" media, in US at least, isn't as "local" as one might hope. And it's a confirmed fact that actual desires of the nation in USA bear statistically-negligent influence over creation of policies, no matter what group of public stooges is "in power", and don't make me start on Merkel & Steinmeier. Yet you all keen on believing any anti-Russia bullshit you hear. I myself is not a fan of Stalin or Bolshevics in general, mostly due to his "Socialism in one country" stance and their inability to build efficient or even sustainable state management system, but that Stalin dirt-smearing and Hitler-equating campaign is too ridiculous even for me. And so for many others, same with Putin. And Putin fucking sucks (actually, mostly Medvedev & his friends who suck the most) with his conservative, non-existent internal affairs policies.

So Buscemi was a firefighter at one time. After 9/11 he came in and helped on the collapse site for I think several weeks. He hates to talk about it. This is one superb human being.
I love how Buscemi refused to get fake plastic teeth like all those other actors. America's obsession with fake looking "perfect teeth" is ridiculous. And yes, before you make fun of me, I'm a European with crappy teeth! :D
He's such a wonderful actor! Since Fargo I've been a huge fan of him. His Khrushchev is such a... Khrushchev )))) p.s. the movie is truly brilliant, accurate and perfect. It's full of absurd, grotesque and terror. Perhaps, that's the actual reason why it's been ridiculously banned here, in Russia, - our officials might have seen a lot of resemblance and might have recognised themselves. There is a lot of tragic about this film, but there's nothing that could be described as insulting. As a viewer I'm infinitely grateful to Mr. Iannucci and each member of the cast for their work. p.p.s. It appeared on the Internet quite a few weeks ago, but it couldn't have been shown on TV - it's totally controlled. greetings from Russia. yep.
Redbad of Frisia Probably. I’ve heard it described as being a backward hick type of place. But then every country has one of those, as well as a stuck-up bit that looks down on the rest! It’s perspective I guess. I do remember one play (Red Monarch) where Stalin and Beria have Irish accents to emphasize this difference with the other characters who spoke with English accents.
I had never heard of the movie until this clip on the show, but after seeing it, it looked rather funny and even quirky. I immediately rented it and loved it! It does portray a strange sense of humor, it's rather dark, dry, and sarcastic. It reminded me in some ways of the Grand Budapest Hotel in terms of humor style. Highly recommend!
Can we just take a moment to admire the awesome movies Buscemi has been in: Resevoir Dogs, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Monster's Inc., Big Fish, Burt Wonderstone.
Brilliant film, they managed to make something that was very serious into something funny and educating at the same time, plus Buscemi is a great actor no doubt
RENATA CANTORE GROSS he was involved in the 9/11 cleanup effort as he used to be a firefighter, even tho he was very well known by then. Didnt come out for years. Just thought id tell you so you can love him more
This is one of the most brilliant films ever! Being too goofy, it is actually not very far of what was like in soviet era. Remember, as was the norm in soviet times, even now with Putin, "Failures is treason". So take your conclusions from this.
"Has it been shown in Russia?" "It's been BANNED in Russia." That's basically an unoffical good review, isn't it? It's the Kremlin equivalent of Trump threatening to sue Michael Wolff ^_^
It doesn't mean anything actually. Movies like this in Russia are banned just because our government tries to inflate some Cold War-ish anti-West hysteria and any movie (any work of art really) that as they see it undermines the glorified image of the soviet (and imperial) russian past is threatening their propaganda. Loved the 'Death of Stalin' BTW, I think it's hilarious and not offensive at all. In fact, it made me dig into this history period to find out which parts of the movie were based on real events and phenomena.

Such a intelligent actor! Also, kudos to Stephen Colbert that he had this interesting conversation and didn't interupt his guest, when he told a politically sophisticated story that probably is not that enticing for a middle brow late show audience. All those other hosts like Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel, even Trevor Noah would have jumped in much earlier and stiffled their guest.
I’m a huge fan of Steves! He’s been in amazing movies and I especially love his voice work Charlottes Web as Rat “Templeton” and Randall Boggs in Monsters Inc/University. He’s probably done loads more. He’s just got the most recognisable of voices out there. Love him 💕💕💕

TheTruth.. what a weird point. also very weak. go back to your Saint Petersburg troll farm and check some backgrounds. a catholic w sympathies for geographical America could hardly be a secret communist. for God's sake!
I love how he has grown into a really reveared actor.. Love him to bits
HAHAHA "How can you run and plot at the same time?" I just finished watching this wonderful film and it is full of so many great one liners and moments like this both hilarious and profound.
So Buscemi was a firefighter at one time. After 9/11 he came in and helped on the collapse site for I think several weeks. He hates to talk about it. This is one superb human being.
Buscemi- thanks for the memories! And laughs, and tears.
and quotes :)
My favourite part of the film is right at the end where Brezhnev is seen behind Kruschev already plotting how to take over.
Mr Buscemi is a great actor. He can play any role.
I love how Buscemi refused to get fake plastic teeth like all those other actors. America's obsession with fake looking "perfect teeth" is ridiculous.
And yes, before you make fun of me, I'm a European with crappy teeth! :D
👍😎 That would be like DeNiro having his mole removed... We're talking _iconic_ here! 😉
well he wouldn't gt hired as much. people want steve because he looks like steve
It's part of his character
The film is British.
We have the same " problem " here in Brazil, the obsession with the perfect looking
He's such a wonderful actor! Since Fargo I've been a huge fan of him. His Khrushchev is such a... Khrushchev ))))
p.s. the movie is truly brilliant, accurate and perfect. Iannucci and each member of the cast for their work.
p.p.s. It appeared on the Internet quite a few weeks ago, but it couldn't have been shown on TV - it's totally controlled. greetings from Russia. yep.
Steve Buscemi seems like such an awesome guy.
I watched the film for the first time yesterday. Really enjoyed it.
Steve's performance was brilliant. The rest of the cast were too.
I saw The Death of Stalin 2 weeks ago in Tbilisi, Georgia. Stalin was born in Georgia
reading your reply for a second I thought there is a movie "The Death of Stalin 2", lol
As was Beria.
...
Thanks by the way, Georgia.
So is Georgia like Russia's Austria or something?
Redbad of Frisia Probably. I’ve heard it described as being a backward hick type of place. But then every country has one of those, as well as a stuck-up bit that looks down on the rest! It’s perspective I guess. I do remember one play (Red Monarch) where Stalin and Beria have Irish accents to emphasize this difference with the other characters who spoke with English accents.
SEBWAX SEBW
"How can you plot and run at the same time?" :D
What an awesome guy
I have a notion to second that emotion ! He's one of my favorite actors. Extremely gifted !!

"I want to make a speech at my father's funeral"
"And I wanna f**k Grace Kelly"
One of the best lines of the film.
Highly recommend!
it's just british
I gonna take this moment to say, "I miss Boardwalk Empire".
Damn good show^
derion3i o yes..... Boardwalk empire and rome are the two HBO shows that forever will have a place in my heart.
Me too
Can we just take a moment to admire the awesome movies Buscemi has been in: Resevoir Dogs, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Monster's Inc., Big Fish, Burt Wonderstone.
Steve was great as always and the guy who played Beria was awesome
Simon Russel Beale. The name of the guy who played Lavrentiy Beria.
As the old saying goes: "God only made so many heads perfect. The rest, He covered with hair."
Probably the one actor in Hollywood I truly have respect for. Thank you for your service to the people of NY.
He's not "in Hollywood ", that's why. He's in NY
When he v was on Conair and the plane was going down he was singing” he’s got the whole world in his hands!” That was so funny.
Bald is beautiful.
And I'm gonna keep saying that until it all grows back, dammit.
Hahaha
respect
New Message I'm going to say it. Every time I see your avatar I get excited,.
Daniel Kintigh - I don't even know which he you're talking about.
Trump, Buscemi, and Colbert are all referenced in this thread.
New Message deflating breasts are beautiful! Gonna keep saying it. I feel ya, bald man.
I think Fargo was one of his best movies :)
Hugh Mungus yes lol
Mr Pink!
Hugh Mungus did you just sexually harass me?
Shut the fuck up Donny
Little guy, kinda funny looking.
Brilliant film, they managed to make something that was very serious into something funny and educating at the same time, plus Buscemi is a great actor no doubt
I Love Steve Buscemi !!!
RENATA CANTORE GROSS he was involved in the 9/11 cleanup effort as he used to be a firefighter, even tho he was very well known by then. Didnt come out for years. Just thought id tell you so you can love him more
i love him more!❤
A very intelligent and well spoken person. Criminally under rated
buscemi is awesome. makes every movie he's in a better film.
The delivery on when he says "Svetlana is here" and she responds "I'm here, I'm over here" is just fantastic haha.
A true actor, I don’t think I’ve never disliked anything he’s ever done. Plus he is originally blue-collar as a fireman.
Great interview of one of my favourites. Saw 'The Death of Stalin'. Dark and satirical. Bravo!
The Death of Stalin is one of the funniest films on Netflix
Such a great film.
Russians see movie not on public TV but via pirate movie sites. Long live internet :)
One of the best living actors. This film was a masterpiece. So underrated
I loved the movie, I might not have heard of it if it were not for this interview, always love Steven Colbert.
holy shit, I almost forgot how much of an awesome dude steve buscemi is...
This is one of the most brilliant films ever! Being too goofy, it is actually not very far of what was like in soviet era. Remember, as was the norm in soviet times, even now with Putin, "Failures is treason". So take your conclusions from this.
"Has it been shown in Russia?"
"It's been BANNED in Russia."
That's basically an unoffical good review, isn't it?
No, it's just a terrible setup to a "joke".
Me too. Turns out Beria wasn't very fat at all.
@@igorverevkin7709 I'm so glad you guys are just boiling in your own leftover puddle of shit in a small bubble (looking worldwide). Your ideas are doomed, you have nowhere to go, do you understand that? You have only local and temporary and feeble protection from the big OUTSIDE...
@@igorverevkin7709 why ban a comedy film?
Are they scared you might laugh?
Him and Frances McDormand are my two favorite actors ever!
The way Steve Buscemi looks at him 9:05 like "bruh, you were followed because you're famous, not because they were secret police you paranoiac."
You're IN' your element
Donny 😄👍
Such a intelligent actor! Also, kudos to Stephen Colbert that he had this interesting conversation and didn't interupt his guest, when he told a politically sophisticated story that probably is not that enticing for a middle brow late show audience. All those other hosts like Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel, even Trevor Noah would have jumped in much earlier and stiffled their guest.
One of the most if not the most underrated actor of the last 20 years... good one mate.
"He's convinced me, gimmie my $1 back."
it's great to hear a flute riffing in the band. finally. it lightens the music!
I’m a huge fan of Steves! He’s been in amazing movies and I especially love his voice work Charlottes Web as Rat “Templeton” and Randall Boggs in Monsters Inc/University. He’s probably done loads more. He’s just got the most recognisable of voices out there. Love him 💕💕💕
That was one of the best films I've seen.
I first saw him in “Fargo”, and as far as I’m concerned, he made that movie.
My favorite movie of all time.
Death of Stalin is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.
I've wanted to live in NY since I was a child. Nailed it!
"You can't really rock [the bald] look?" I'm sorry, but: Sir Patrick Stewart.
Steve Buscemi is an awesome actor. I’m also proud to be a fellow New Yorker..
"How can you run and plot at the same time?"
Yes, but can he outrun Beria the Butcher as well?
Brilliant...
i really love their acting especially Steve Buscemi.. i lost count how many times i rewatching this film
They unfortunatley still ban theatrical releases of movies, but very very rarely. But they actually do ban movies in US too. Both countries have their share of dumb people. Ban of Death of Stalin is super controversial in Russia though.
Both countries need to ban all movies made in thier own countries for a year or two. Only allow movies made by foreigners.
Сергей Which movies have been banned in the USA? I am especially interested at Russian production
@Сергей Мешков En-light us what Russian made movie was BANNED from showing in USA?
Can you try to explain why "Death of Stalin" is banned from cinemas in Russia? It is a satirical movie about a certain period in the Soviet Union. What is so upsetting to the current political regime in Russia that they feel the need to ban it from today's public? Are the characters depicted in this movie all heros and saints of the Soviet Union (including Stalin), not to be criticised or laughed at at all, especially in a foreign made film? Or what is the reasoning behind this censorship?
Сергей Мешков But it’s a dark comedy , It’s a sign of how much Russia is a putin dictatorship, no freedom of speech
I wish there was a way to watch this Buscemi interview without having to watch Colbert.
Seen it 4 Times and will be watching many more times! The Acting was Subline. If only in real life these people where that relatable instead of the Mass Murderers they were!!
When he's directing where to go by pointing with Stalin's feet = perfection.
I went my entire childhood without knowing I lived three blocks from him
Brilliant movie, brilliant actor - also Michael Palin was brilliant!
"have you been to russia? It's worth a trip" No Stephen, no its not.
This was such an outstanding movie. One of the best I’ve seen in a while. Steve Buscemi has always been one of my favourites
Boardwalk Empire
Turbid TG1 That's the performance where I really saw just what an amazing and underrated actor Steve is!
Just finished watch "Death of Stalin". Buscemi actually pulls it off. Funny as hell.
01:15 "Shut up Donny"
This guy is one of the greatest 🙌🙌🙌
My celebrity dream date since I was 14 and saw him in Armageddon.
to be fair he's more weird- or memorable- than repulsive-looking. also his wife wasn't ugly, even slightly prettier than average I'd say - i.e. he was in the taste of a good-looking woman
that movie is literally one of the greatest movies iv seen. totally blindsided by how good it was
Colbert keeps talking about Russia as if any American who steps foot in there will be monitored and followed by police. No Stephen, that was just you for obvious reasons. I think you should clarify that at least.
if he was monitored at all
Although yea no American will be monitored north korea style (unless it's a political official). It is rather well to note that the Russian Republic under Putin is rather fascistic itself. More so than the USA.
What a great actor. All of his roles are totally believable.
"Bussemi"? I thought it was pronounced "Bushemi'?
It is
