  • Aptera, Turkish Fort up on top of the hill overlooking Souda Bay. The fort was built is 1867 by the Turkish governor of Crete after the 1866 revolution. It is next to the Ancient Roman ruins of Aptera. One of the nicest archeological places near Chania and maybe of all of Crete. Recently opened to the public after its restoration. Amazing views and they have started to arrange concerts and events at the fort. Beautiful spot to explore and it is free to get in and they have refreshments and bathrooms. You have probably seen this fort that looks like a castle as you drive from or to Chania from Rethymno and sometimes they even have lights on it at night. Only 156 years old is nothing compared to the archeological site next to it that is 2,000 years old or the Minoan sites that are 4,000 years old. After learning a little bit about the fort I am more interested in learning about the 1866 revolution.
