Nice reaction. 😄 Maybe a few additional words about Patty Gurdy are allowed. Patty is an independent musician from Germany. As many, if not all, musicians she was in some local bands (in her case pirate-/folk-metal) while she was young. In 2016, with 19, she startet her own youtube-channel @PattyGurdy with the goal to „reintroduce the Hurdy-Gurdy to the mainstream“. On this channel she had so far published many videos to explain the hurdy-gurdy, vlogs about gigs/music making, covered a couple of songs from different genres, ranging even from opera to folk to dancepop to Nightwish-songs, and published own songs in a style she calls „dark folk pop“. With the success of her cover of „Over the hills and far away“ (Original Gary Moore/Nightwish) her channel attracted the attention of the producers of the Amazon-prime fantasy-crime-show „Carnival Row“. Patty wrote and played/sang 2 fairy-folk-songs as the musical voice of character Aisling Querelle in the first season of that show (Lora Lie Lo / Grieve no More). In 2018 the German gothic-rock band ASP needed a female singer and a hurdy-gurdy player as replacements for (as singer) Lisa Pawelka (Faun) in their „Live-and-extended Zabererbruder“-tour. Patty was their 2-in-1-package for that, you might say. Pattys great performance on this tour brought her to the attention of other German bands in Folk/Medieval Rock/Metal such as Subway To Sally, Feuerschwanz, dArtagnan, Saltatio Mortis etc. She had made a couple of songs with them as well as with Alestorm, Scardust (prog metal from Israel - video „Concrete cages“), Ayreon (Transitus) and will also feature on the upcoming album from Feuerschwanz in one song. So you can find her in a couple of different songs and collabs. Her own channel has now over 71,5 million views - not bad for an independent musician without label or management. Currently she works on a tavern-folk album, as she calls it. Her last music-video was a cover of „Last ride of the day“ from Nightwish, played only on her hurdy-gurdy (of course) and a tenor-nyckelharpa (a Swedish folkinstrument). As she did only the first half of the song, I‘m not the only one who hopes for a full version on her next album. Ok, that were a "few more" words. Sorry. 😁

Thank you for sharing. That is really cool that she is blowing up as an independent artist.

It is mandatory to activate the subtitles on Alestorm videos, there is always something hidden, like the frog fact in this one. There is one video in which they have subtitles for the guitar solo!
It seems like this is the same outdoor location where Feuerschwanz filmed Ding.
Patty Gurdy and Alestorm have worked together prior to this. Among others, she did the female vocals on Zombies ate my Pirate Ship.
VotDM is a nice change to the silly party metal (which I heavily enjoy) they are mostly associated with. Drink is one of my favourites and they took it to the extreme with P.A.R.T.Y.

I am not that familiar with the pirate culture. What other songs and bands should I check out?

For me, Alestorm is one of those bands I'll listen to if they randomly come up on Pandora, or a video like this one. But I never go out of my way to look for them.

For me most “party” bands hold that place in my heart. I enjoy them when they come on, but when left to my own devices, I don’t turn to them.

Everything gets better with Patty ;-)
The song is part of the EP of the same name, which will be released on March 22nd. Patty sings a little higher here than she normally does. She is currently on tour with the band and sings a little deeper, as is usual with her. This is already the third collaboration with her. On the penultimate album you could only hear her hury-gurdy, on the last one she is a background singer. Now she has the lead. The next logical step would be band membership:
ALESTORM - Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship (Official Video) | Napalm Records
Patty Gurdy alias Patricia Büchler is probably the most successful solo hurdy-gurdy player. She started with the pirate metal band Storm Seeker. When her acoustic version of a single became more successful than the original, she left the band. Since then she has been making Celtic Pop Folk. Her second album will be released soon:

@@MattsMoshPit1If I recall correctly you won't see Patty on the other Alestorm-video. But she appeared on "Big ship - little ship" from Alestorm. I don't think it really matters but her reasons to leave Storm Seeker at that time were a little bit more complex and Storm Seeker wasn't really important for her career. Maybe as much as the Kindergarten for a professor. :D

@@Ado_rpg Yes, maybe a little simplified. But that would have been too long:
In 2016 she released her first song, without vocals. Three covers followed in 2017, which were significantly more successful than the band's videos. One of them is a song by Storm Seeker. The third one also features musicians from Storm Seeker. At the beginning of 2018 she released another cover and at the end of the year she left the band. Her first own album will be released in 2019.
The replacement process took a little longer and will have shifted the balance of power in the band. She hadn't co-founded the band and its success called the founders' path into question. This inevitably leads to tensions. If the founders do not want to reduce their claim, then there will be a break. The break was almost inevitable because Patty had become too big for the band.

So I remember listening to their first album when it first came out and enjoying it, and I am certain I must have listened to the second album, but I remember nothing of it. Never listened to anything else of theirs, as my interest in folk metal took a nosedive. This song is cool but underwhelming, it's not going to suddenly make me want to listen to more.

Makes sense. I am still really enjoying folk metal, as it’s still very new to me.
