I love the simple but oh so robust construction of BSAs - they really were built so well . . . After all of these years, simple cleaning, checking and lubrication is all that is required - BSA quality !! . . .

I'm always surprised how well the front brake works on my 1965 BSA A65, despite being only 1/2 hub width.
So proper linings, and set up well, your full width hub should be a fine "anchor".
    Keep well.............

You're giving that bike some much needed TLC. I'm doing a similar job on a neglected Triumph I picked up recently. I'm not as meticulous as you are but I'm doing what needs to be done to make it ride better and look a little nicer. I wish I was local, it would be fun to have a bike featured on In the Cul-de-sac.

Hub look really good. This Bike is one of My favorite's that I have seen in Your video's. That is saying a lot because there's a ton of great Bike's in Your content. This one is modded a bit but very tastefully modded not over the top. 👍👍

I'm more a Norton specialist, but that looks like an 8 inch single leading shoe front break. From memory my mate in the 70s replaced that with a TLS from the Rocket Gold Star, which he reakoned compared to the first disk breaks on say a Sueuki 500. I was with Norton, and on my Atlas Café racer I had the Norton TLS. Honestly it was a spongebag. Norton brought out a kit to stiffe'n up the TLS levers. They didn'tadvertise it that would be admitting... I went radical. I bought a twin 8 inch custom hub off of a sidecar racer. Built a new wheel round it THEN after assembly skimmed both sides to exactly round. Then mounted Ferodo Green racing linings to both sides and machined them exactly round to match the hubs. Now the green linings do not give instant bite. but they were x2. Those linings resisted break fade under stress. Norton experts like >Mick Hemmings said I was stupid, the weight of that front wheel spinning was going to mess up the handling. Maby it did I'm not that good. However THE PIG STOPPED. Later Norton added Twin Disks, with with a wooden feel and just as heavy. Honestly if you have an SLS 8 inch break, assemble then skim. Fit new shoe linings, not racing. Machine them to match exactly the skimmed wheel. Assemble and it will work 50% better than when it went out of the factory and leaves your bike completely standard

Hello Mike ! Season greetings and happy new year 2024! I like watching your videos every sunday morning (GMT time in Europe). I am amazed by all your knowledge your skills and passion for restoring and maintaining all your classic motorcycles. You not only spent time working on them, but you ride them. You don't own them just for display purpose. It makes your channel the most interesting for me. I wish I had yourskills, tooling and more room in my garage to perform mechanic work myself on my bikes. Keep on good work and ride safely !

    Hi Mike
    Great work as always.
You likely have already done this, but if not, you might want to check the wheel for true.
I was thinking today of all the things I've done to date to reduce vibration on my 650ss, which was quite horrible for vibes when I first got it.
I happened to check the wheels, which were new chrome Devon rims and ss spokes all supposedly laced up at a mc shop in Ontario.
The rear was out of round by over 1/8" and the front was only slightly better! Side to side was out as well. Trueing the wheels got rid of much of the really harsh vibration.
I realized today that I have not yet done this with the Super Rocket.

Hi Glen, thank you very much for the great advice. I will definitely do that while the wheels are still loose. The tire place balanced them, but they would not have trued them up, so definitely worth checking, thank you. Happy new year! Best wishes.

A Grand New Year to you and your family Mike! I’m intrigued by your approach to Dynamic Preservation. Careful and thorough dis-assembly, inspect/clean/polish and repair or replace only what’s needed.
This has been my approach for many years. Very time consuming but the results are well worth the efforts!
BTW, nice Dales Wheels Through Time green shop towel on the bench.
    Regards, Mick

The Mothers is great for polishing but that Quick-Glo you have is really good for getting rust off a chrome or metal part. I was trying to find another container of that stuff recently because mine is almost empty and kinda dried up... but I don't think they make it anymore. Wish I had known, I would have stocked up.

Happy NewYear Mike ! Another nice video. An alternative method for removing rust out of a tank is citric acid mixed with water. Let the tank sit for one or two days, Drain it and slush it with acetone to get rid of the rest of the water. After drying I use a one component tank sealer and let the tank dry for at least one week.

In review of the front wheel video, you changed the tyre. Did the shop balance and check true? We have been replacing spokes more on recent rebuilds because we are seeing broken spokes. Have you considered spoke replacement?

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  5 месяцев назад

Thanks Robert, Cycle Gear definitely balanced the wheel, because they added some weights, but I don't think they check for true. My friend has a wheel stand and so I'm definitely going to check before refitting. Cheers
