It's matured my thinking on not just "WOW THING GO BOOM, TAKE MY MONEY" no, now it's more about "Ok what does this game feature for gameplay loops, how long is the story/campaign, where can I go in this world, how are the graphics, can I pet the doggy, is there artificial or skill-based difficulty and if so, how big is the learning curve, is it unfair, did it launch in Cyberpunk 2077 states of broken/hype, etc." If I hadn't watched this video, I probably wouldn't own Valheim, or Raft, or MGSV: TPP, Shadow Warrior 2, Metro 2033/Last Light Redux & Exodus, Alien Isolation, Slay the Spire, Destiny 2, and so much more....and that's just PC. The big thing to take away from this video is simple: be your own videogame critic; make up your own mind but be receptive to others' perspectives (take that one to the bank kiddos). It's ok to align with some other like-minded reviewers, but at the end of the day, don't just be a moth to the flame with everyone else: be unique! Ensure that your thoughts and hypothesis aligns accurately and isn't just some hate/love-train that EVERYONE is on because it's popular, or because the whole: "Nope! You are nitpicking and biased. His ending point in this video is “The language and points raised in reviews don’t always match the verdicts.” But that’s not what you take away, is it? What you take away is what the comments are *full* of - “IGN absolute *roasts* a game, then gives it a great score anyway.” His skill as a reviewer, and as an entertainer, is finding - or creating - these specific ideas that people *latch* onto, and become memes of themselves that are still indicative of the whole - like, to name another, Knack.

I think the "reviewers only give a 7 max, if a game has a 7 or below AVOID" meme is a bit questionable because there are more niche games that reviewers don't understand and end up giving lower scores to. For example God Hand, which Dunkey himself brought up. It kinda implies that the only problem with reviewers is that they give too-high scores and they're otherwise great at reviewing games which is silly, game journo types love plenty of generic shitty games & dismiss many good ones.

@@kingt0295 I’ve never played RuneScape before, but I find this most aligns with Persona 5 from my experience. I say it’s a 6/10 game, but people give it a 9/10 and have the same complaints as me.
Honestly one of the greatest videos of all time in the gaming community, its a hilarious satire on the gaming community laced with intelligent undertones and commentary
Being in corporate America, I have some insight into how professional businesses understand a 1-10 rating scale. Interestingly enough, based on typical human psychology, rating systems go like this: 10 is perfect, 9 is good, 8 is alright, 1-7 is bad. If your company gets a 7 average on a customer survey, that’s considered awful. This is because people are relatively generous in the scores they give. It’s interesting that when Dunkey says that all IGN reviews are somewhere from 7-9 and that they all mean good, that’s because Dunkey’s 1-5 rating system is more logical. I point this out because he might be surprised to learn that 7-9 are not good scores according to most people. That being said, I’m not defending these critics, I just thought that was interesting.
This can be countered by giving meaning to those numbers. I used to read a gaming magazine ([N]Gamer, doesn't exist anymore), that had devoted 1/2 a page before the reviews with a short rundown of what each grade means, with 6 being a good purchase if you're into that genre, and 8 being an excellent game, but not an evergreen, to give you some examples. Unfortunately, this could only work because those grades only 'work' inside the environment of the magazine, and the format of a bi-monthly magazine can afford a little bit of space for such a rundown, youtube reviews can't really
What's stupid though is that we only go for 4.5 or 5s. Amazon for example is 4.5 people buy, 4 stars they don't. I'm guilty of this too. I have to force myself to buy something I want that has 4 stars. Idk why but it feels bad to get 4 star items even though logically that doesn't make them bad.
a 1-7 scale should be be the standard. Creates more nuance, takes a second to consider, and delivers a more accurate score. Also, scales out of 10 are useless because half the scores should just reduce. 2/10 is the same as 1/5 4/10 is just 2/5 6/10 is just 3/5 8/10 is just 4/5 This is negated by a scale out of 7.
if 7-9 are not good scores according to most people, that’s kinda foolish. If 70% of my friends told me something was good, or a thing was 70% good, that’s a noteworthy amount of goodness right there.
Still one of my favorite videos of this channel. Not only hilarious but has genuinely good advice as someone with a channel of their own. We don't deserve Dunkey. 🙇♂️
Great video. Well structured. Very good script. Made me laugh several times. 3.14 out of 10. Nah, seriously. It made me click the like button several times. I actually wasn't joking with the first part of the "review" joke.
Back in the days when we had gaming magazines you were often times granted multiple opinions in one review, letting the reader see that different gamer types prefered different types of games, difficulty handling and then some. Some games saw mixed scores like one revier give an 8, another a 6 and the third guy a 9. And each reviewer got a separate short view box for personal opinions to sum up their ideas about their ratings. I loved that. It let you as a reader and gamer also think for yourself a bit, to consider whether a game was for you or not. Today people want "carved in stone" writings and not let their own opinions reign supreme. You might say a game sucks and I say it is great.
such an insightful video, I wish more people reviewing games would understand it's literally impossible to be "objective", but you hear that so often. "I'm trying to be objective about this," you CAN'T, your opinion is the only thing your ego is even able to offer
Watching this in 2023, and all of this aged well. It's like reviews have become more about content creation and marketing than giving consumers a heads up.
I was looking at reviews for parasite on rotten tomatoes and I was perplexed that it had a 99% with only five bad reviews. I'm a bit surprised since it's truly a masterpiece of a film and when I see these rotten reviews the first one I read is by, Armond White. What a legend.
This was the first Dunkey video I ever watched. I’m still coming back once a year to watch it and it still hold true. This video is a masterpiece. 2.3/10
Seen a lot of salt flowing from the "professional game critics" on twitter all pointing at this vid so naturally i had to see how what got their collective panties in a bunch. And was not disappointed. This is basically the flamethrower used to lite the bonfire that has been built out of "gaming media" Which is part of a bigger bonfire for the media in general. TLDR: Dunkey rustled a lot of jimmies with this.
My favorite thing about Dunkey is how concise he is. This topic could easily have been an hour long, carefully dissecting the topic and building a case with evidence. Instead we get snappy editing, one liners and good writing that gets the core of the argument accross in under 10 minutes. Perfect
WAIT WHAT DO YOU MEEEEAAAN BIG RIGS IS BAD!? IT'S A VERITABLE MASTERPIECE!! The attention to detail in even adding an Easter egg mechanic where driving backwards removes the top speed cap, and the incredible graphics for the time, *Chef kiss* AH!MAGNIFICO!!
Dunkey is actually very impressive as a critic and there's a lot of thought that goes into what he says and when, despite how casual he appears. Conciseness is a big part of Dunkey's style, as he endeavors to say a lot without actually speaking very much, which drastically increases the value of what he does say. He'll do this by writing intermediate sentences but putting a lot of information into them that the viewer can immediately resonate with. One common sentence format for him starts with something like "Contra, Cuphead, Ikaruga -- all of these games..." By referencing characteristics that many well-known games have instead of describing them in detail, he is able to paint a more nuanced picture in the viewer's head, faster, which will allow him to bring these elements together in a way the audience won't expect but can immediately understand regardless. By avoiding talking about minute details in work he's discussing, he simultaneously makes his message stronger, removes the need for semantic arguments, and trims fat from his criticisms and videos. This style fits perfectly with his philosophy about gaming, as he most highly values immediacy and visceral fun in game design. I personally tend to drone on about small parts of the material that everyone else doesn't care about, giving a long list of examples but still explaining them mechanistically in a way that diminishes their value, instead of making the largest point straight away.
*Never says any flaw and praises only saying really good things about it making the game looks like a masterpiece* Definitely the weakest entry in the series, that's why I rate it a 7.4/10
coming back here after IGN outed themselves saying that they rate the game base on how they think people will like it LMAO. i cant believe a company like that exist, its like if i were a food critic and never eat any of the food at all, i just imagine how people will feel eating that based on its looks and the chef's experience and base my review on that.
The Dunkmaster jests... But there are, unfortunately, Bubsy 3D fans out there, and they're the same ones who liked the new shitty Bubsy game that NOBODY ASKED FOR.
BLACKIESBOY We must be going to different parts of the internet, but ah well. Though I'd argue being part of the Bubsy legacy actually makes said legacy WORSE, at any rate.
Duniey truly went off about a million things with excellent pace and grace in this video and it shows in its timeless quality I revisit this a lot and it never really disappoints
Yes, IGN doesn't understand good game design. Alien Isolation was one of the better horror stealth games to be released recently and they missed all of its good points.
the fuck are you talking about. the game comes to a screeching halt near the end, and it drags on for way too long. it was definitely not good game design, as it felt like the biggest turd in the universe was exiting your anus in a public bathroom when all you want to do is make it stop - slow and tedious
I'm glad someone is calling reviews out for overusing high scores. Sites use 7's/8's/9's so much that they have lost their meaning and people are just using the number to win fanboy wars. I mean, nowadays people say "7/10 is ok, 6/10 is bad. 5/10 and below is a laughing stock of a game", when realistically, 5/10 is OK, 6/10 is GOOD, 7/10 is GREAT; the higher scores shouldn't be used so carelessly just to appease the developers because we need higher scores to actually mean something.
I totally agree, and I would like to add that I think reviewers aren't the only ones at fault here. Because of the fanboy wars, whenever a reviewer tries to be objective and give a game a lower score they are immediately lynched for it. Bottom line is we need to stop taking review scores so personally.
Amenduh Bainez The reason being is that grade scale logic. Like a 7/10 is a C grade and 5/10 is a F, so going lower than that is either pointless or says lot about the game. Which raises the question "why not use the 5/5 scale or actually use the letter grades?"
I agree with the sentiment, but I think the score system should be more as following: 5/10 - Mixed or average. 6/10 - Slightly over average. Decent. 7/10 - Good, but (...) 8/10 - Great, but (...) 9/10 - Excellent with minor flaws 10/10 - Masterful and innovative with minor flaws That way most games would fall somewhere between 5-7 instead of 7-8 as they do now.
It's really just a abuse with the rating system. And they do it for the worst possible reason. Not because they hate the given game or franchise or because the don't like the genre of the game, but because of money. Pure fucking greed is driving these people to do stuff like undeserved high rating.
You bring up a valid point about not wanting to piss off developers when they get review copies. That's very very true. Developers don't like if you don't like what was sent to you and express it in a review. It's a shame, too, because this causes games to get inflated on Metacritic and it leaves a discrepancy between viewers and the critics when you're not honest.
You wouldn't review a movie by only watching half of it, would you? I wouldn't, because that's not what the intended experience was. It's the same thing.
Josh T I agree slightly. To give a negative review they don't have to, but positive reviews require full experience, as the game could go to shit later.
"My girlfriend isnt loyal, cheats when ever she can and doesn't hide that she is with other guys" 9/10 "She has a little something for everyone" - IGN

That being said, I’m not defending these critics, I just thought that was interesting.
i blame the school system for this mindset
2/10 is the same as 1/5
4/10 is just 2/5
6/10 is just 3/5
8/10 is just 4/5
This is negated by a scale out of 7.
if 7-9 are not good scores according to most people, that’s kinda foolish. If 70% of my friends told me something was good, or a thing was 70% good, that’s a noteworthy amount of goodness right there.

One of the classic video in all time . 11/10

Guys remember when IGN gave alien isolation - 5 and criticised game for AI being too smart and game is too long
Isn't the point of alien to be really long and have a awesome expiernce not knowing whether the alien actually found you or not?
Yes, IGN doesn't understand good game design. Alien Isolation was one of the better horror stealth games to be released recently and they missed all of its good points.
It is too long
They criticised Pokémon for too much water as well haha
the fuck are you talking about. the game comes to a screeching halt near the end, and it drags on for way too long. it was definitely not good game design, as it felt like the biggest turd in the universe was exiting your anus in a public bathroom when all you want to do is make it stop - slow and tedious
It kind of makes sense if you think of it in terms of grade percentages.9/10 is an A, 8/10 is a B, 7/10 is a C and anything less then that is a fail.
Amenduh Bainez The reason being is that grade scale logic. Like a 7/10 is a C grade and 5/10 is a F, so going lower than that is either pointless or says lot about the game. Which raises the question "why not use the 5/5 scale or actually use the letter grades?"
I agree with the sentiment, but I think the score system should be more as following:
5/10 - Mixed or average.
6/10 - Slightly over average. Decent.
7/10 - Good, but (...)
8/10 - Great, but (...)
9/10 - Excellent with minor flaws
10/10 - Masterful and innovative with minor flaws
That way most games would fall somewhere between 5-7 instead of 7-8 as they do now.
It's really just a abuse with the rating system. And they do it for the worst possible reason. Not because they hate the given game or franchise or because the don't like the genre of the game, but because of money. Pure fucking greed is driving these people to do stuff like undeserved high rating.
I keep coming back to this video. So good. Dunkey spitting facts
You bring up a valid point about not wanting to piss off developers when they get review copies. That's very very true. Developers don't like if you don't like what was sent to you and express it in a review. It's a shame, too, because this causes games to get inflated on Metacritic and it leaves a discrepancy between viewers and the critics when you're not honest.
you need to update your switch video btw
Haedox True, but then there's dicksucking developers like Buzzfeed which called Fallout 4 "the best game ever"
Haedox Wow. I didn't know content creators were allowed to enjoy other people's content

Haedox got dropped by Nintendo so he kind of has the most experience when it comes to pissing off devs...
Wow why did this video get so much backlash, it's totally reasonable and you weren't even overly insulting...
Brandon B The Reviewers were triggered
The only thing I disagree with is I don't think a review has to finish a game to give a verdict.
If it has a brand name on it there's always going to be _somebody_ loyal to it.
You wouldn't review a movie by only watching half of it, would you? I wouldn't, because that's not what the intended experience was. It's the same thing.
Josh T I agree slightly. To give a negative review they don't have to, but positive reviews require full experience, as the game could go to shit later.
Man, coming back to this video made me TRULY remember what it feels like to BE a BAT MAN
