I am a CAF veteran….it was a good first job for poor people like me….i would never encourage anyone to join now…. It’s a system that uses people and promotes bullies and cowards who stay while anyone with a spine moves on to better things
My years of service in uniform 1967-96. 3rd generation in my family to have served. x2 Infantry Reserve Regiments, x1 Regular Armoured Regiment + other specialties. x1 Grandfather, Infantry, x2 Uncles Infantry & Navy & my Dad , Airforce. Since the end of WW2 both traditional governing parties, took turns when in power degrading & destroying Canada’s military. It takes generations to ruin a military through neglect. Both Liberals & Conservatives did it repeatedly. Further, the z Canadian voting public has never made the status of Canada’s military an election issue. Both traditional governing parties took their lead from that fact. Canada gets what it pays for.
About thirty years ago or so all our PMQ houses across Canada were sold to a single retired general for just ONE DOLLAR!!! He was supposed to run these properties as a private company, and do all the maintenance. What happened with that? Did he sell them all back to Canada for millions of dollars? Housing, housing, housing, day care, day care, WHAT ABOUT WEAPONS!
Wow,I'm from Finland, and just hearing this about the CAF is a shocker. We are a country of just over 5 million and have an active force of about 24 K, and during wartime, around 280 K.with reserve personnel of about 870 K, and these are statistics from 2023.
The state of the housing is criminal. They need to stop rent increases to keep up with the local economies. CFHA is charging full rent on houses paid for in the 60s.

Contract Civis to train the trades 50-75% of the way and then military trainers the final 50-25% (which would account for specialized/security sensitive training). A 310T can train your mechanics on quite a bit and the military guys can take on the rest.

Harper tried to build up our military. Along with Special forces which he did. Trudeau scrapped the coast guard RCMP CBSA Csor JTF2. Mset program in 2018 the great lakes were no.longer patrolled and still not. With the coast mset program with above security teams mentioned. That was formed in 2010. 2012 hero class ships were brought in. For the mset program scrapped. New ships Harper ordered. Scrapped fighter jets at lower cost. Scrapped Trudeau ordered same jets at higher cost longer wait time. Our military is in so much danger. I feel bad for them. Do not enlist until we get Pierre's team. Fixing the DND. Which he will.
We really should stop pretending at this point and shut it all down. Turn the army into forest rangers, release the 50 pilots we have to the airlines, turn the navy into a ferry service and call it a day.
Why don't you solve the housing problem by purchasing thousands of fold-out pre-fab houses from Elon Musk's. Totally complete and set up in a few hours for $ 9,000 each.
I'm 55 and I would go into the forces in a supportive role. I see see on job boards they need techs and such. I wanna do this but Canada doesn't need me because I don't fit. I would rather be a grunt
