  • Let's be honest, this is a controversial subject. As cyclist there are so many things we spend our money on to enjoy our hobby/lifestyle. So HOW and WHERE we spend our money is very important to us. I understand the statement "you get what you pay for" very well, BUT that doesn't mean I'm not willing to take a risk every now and then.
So over the past 5 years I've been riding "open mold" carbon fiber frames
that I've purchased directly from China through various outlets. These frames have been built myself and ridden heavily in different conditions. After hundreds if not thousands of miles over multiple frame styles from multiple suppliers I feel I have enough information and experience to speak on this subject.
My current stance is: If you do your research, manage expectations, and understand the risk these frames can be an acceptable solution to a need. It is very important to understand that a cheaper route can only be the right choice in certain use cases. In my case I use these frames for bikes that either won't see a lot of "hard" riding OR they won't see a lot of miles in general.
For those interested in going down this road, I do highly recommend Ty at DIY Carbon Bikes.

Better? Hell no. But way cheaper and probably serve 95% of the need.

I built a DCB F100 (Scott Spark) last year, and I have had zero issues. Ty was extremely responsive & helpful during the build. Because the frame was so inexpensive, I could afford to buy top spec parts. The result? A 23 lb race rocket. No regrets!

If china can make fighter planes why can't they make a nice carbon frame

Dude, really good video. I like how you’re not cocky or arrogant, just presenting good information

If you are patience type, the "unguided" internal cableing isnt a tragedy, the quality of the derailleur hanger also not a problem , you can buy a better one then what comes with the frame. I ordered a fully Lexon Myst from Ali, w/o rear shock, payd 500 USD . If the frame will not have any strcutural or rigidity problem , man that thing is worth it. I dont care if the build will last a bit longer than the usual. I got a fully carbon frame for a fracture of the big names prices.

To run the cables..... This sounds crazy, but it works. Tape a bic pen onto a vaccum. Stick that in the ending hole, and run a small piece of twine in the starting hole.... and it will get sucked into the bic pen vaccum attachment... then use that to run your cable.

I love my one year old lightcarbon chinese full sus frame lcfs 911 model that looks like a 2018 Spark. Ive had it for over a year and raced it 6 times with three 1sts, and 3 3rds. Works flawlessly, and quality is good , reliability excellent, and looks wise, tolerances right on. I don't know what you consider quality since you werent too specific on what was wrong with a chinese open mold other than a derailleur hanger and internal routing, an issue i didnt find overwhelming, but after racing a chinese hardtail for 6 years with zero problems , 46 races on my hardtail with nearly 40 podiums I can say they are a steal. No problems with axles, or derailleur hangers, whatever. I only broke one derailleur hanger in 6 years and in all those races i mentioned.. there are way more pros than you think .....resale, if i were to purchase a name brand full sus xc carbon frame im spending around 4 grand and selling it three years later will only get maybe 1500 to 2500 at the most.Thats a loss of 1500 bucks to 2500 hundred dollars.. i paid 575 dollars plus 200 shipping for my light carbon.. so say 775 bucks.. If I sell it in 3 years i can still get 200-250 bucks for it at a loss of maybe 300 to 500 at the most. Thats 1/4 to 1/5 the loss of a name brand over priced carbon frame. By the way the derailleur hangers are supposed to break under certain loads to protect the carbon frame from damage, that's why they are made from aluminium and not steel. Ill never buy an overpriced name brand again.

Would be interesting to see Hambini and Luescher Teknik inspect these, and check tolerances, roundness, alignment, how good the carbon work is.

I agree with your sentiment concerning open molds, and DIY Carbon Bikes, specifically. I opted for a rigid carbon fork from them in the Whisky "style." It is significantly cheaper (like half the price) of the Whisky brand fork, and even cheaper when compared to the Enve rigid. I like the clean, uncluttered look of your frame. Some carefully chosen accents in either anodized parts or aftermarket decal should set the bike off, but it looks outstanding in its current config. I went the opposite way from your bike, by deleting the Fox34, putting on a rigid fork, and putting on 3.5 inch Fat B Nimble tires for my "suspension."

Great video! Very interesting! Do you have to pay a lot in shipping or is that built into the price?

Currently doing my first diy build on the same frame. Thinking I should pick up a few spare derailleur hangers like you mentioned. What am I looking for and can you recommend a shop?

I watched one of those RUclips vids (probably MegaProjects) where they explained the doctrine of Chinese Manufacturing. Most manufacturers, especially known ones, have that "Customer Satisfaction First" mind set. They'd be like: "Here's what the customer wants and needs. We're gonna build something they'll gonna use, admire and treasure for years."

    man what a cool bike
