How to (quickly) disassemble and maintain a Benchmade Axis-lock knife like the 940-2

- Today, I'll share a much faster approach to maintaining an Axis lock than you've seen in my Benchmade Valet, Rift, or Contego videos. You're not able to service every nook and cranny (hah), but you get the important stuff, quickly.
940-2, this knife is a masterpiece, my favorite EDC
I just used this method to clean and lube a used 940 I had picked up. It worked great with no hiccups, and the action is much smoother now. Thanks for the tips and demonstration!
You have hinted at this video more times than my strange uncle has mentioned the size of the giant albino goldfish he totally caught while fishing alone
I usually loosen one side of the scale screws just a little bit so the is a little more wiggle room to get the blade back in
Might be old but I love thus vid as a South Philly guy, hearing that voice in Atlanta is fantastic
Dude, that first snap when trying to put the blade and washer back in would have INFURIATED me, I'd have lost it and thrown everything and just bought a new one, but hey, that's me. Good that you can keep your cool my guy, great channel!
Thanks for this vid guy. I did this to my mini adamas and now it’s semi-drop smooth. Love the accent and positivity.
Thanks for this. I've had my 940 for about a year and have been a bit hesitant to take it all the way apart to clean it. This was very easy. Took maybe 10 minutes including time to get tools and supplies. 👍
Thanks Nick .I got my mini grip apart to change the pivot and screw to blue. To match the liner and stud . Tried twice to get it back together. No luck. But now thanks to you quick pivot, washer
Video. No problem thanks Kerry
The cool thing about Benchmade is free sharpening and repair for life. Just send it to the Oregon City factory. I live fairly nearby and they have an awesome Factory outlet store to visit and drop off repairs and sharpening.
That's cool and all, but having your warranty voided if you take your own knife apart is not a beautiful thing.
@Jeremy I know for sure it's benchmade, I'm unaware if Spyderco has the same outlook.
Nick is never annoying, thank you for not being annoying.
Nick: “Next step, you’re gonna need some sort of a small little duel...”
Me: “Okay, seems excessive, but whatever you say.”
**Proceeds to get out a tiny Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr**
Steven Rassmussen I will not throw away my shot
I followed all your instructions with the same tools and products. It’s running smoother than ever
I've carried my 940 for almost 6 years now all I do is blow some air avery once in awhile and that's it and it works like butter very smooth and no hang ups
Cleaned mine today following this, thanks. Made a huge difference in the action.
Nick, you didn't show us the centering. I have a classic 940 (green/purple), and it's a fine balancing act indeed between minimal blade play and 'acceptable' centering.
I just saw this method on a JTs knives video. Makes the benchmade maintenance one of the easier knives to maintain
Hazin Rob at the ApostleP channel had a video on this method a little less than 2 yrs ago, roughly. For my use, this is all I need to do. I know that BM has had some issues in the recent past, but, I've bought 5 new in box since early summer 2017. They have all been perfect out of the box.
Omg thanks for tip with using lock to install pivot. It is more easy than in normal position. Run very good on argan oil now
This is a great way for finicky knives.
Used this way on my bugout and Caribbean. Improved both with little fuss.
Have been looking forward to an axis disassembly episode.
I love your slightly longer tip Nick.
Nick makes me happy.
MarkOfThyBeast chase get outta here
Trash Flips shut the fuck up other Nick
MarkOfThyBeast Nick Shabazz is infinitely cooler than both of us, shush
Trash Flips Nick makes me happy.
MarkOfThyBeast he makes me jealous
Good video. I buy a lot of used knives off eBay. Uniformly, they are dirty. Step 1. Soak in vinegar. It can reduce rust. Step 2. Use a series of q - tips with the vinegar. I squeeze the q-tip with a pair of pliers to flatten the same and get into small areas. If a q-tip comes out dirty, don't use that end a second time. Step 3. When the knife is dry, try to operate. Operating dry will allow you to understand where parts are rubbing and whether you have to loosen or tighten screws, eventually. Step 4. Lubricate. Step 5. Check the lubricate areas with a flattened q-tip. You may find additional junk has been loosened up. Step 6. Test for full function and adjust screws if necessary. Rarely has it been necessary to take the knife apart, partially or fully, to get it to work. The last time was a broken part in a Spyderco Endura and the part was not available outside the factory, so it went back to the factory and without asking, the factory reconditioned the used blade as well.
Never soak metal in vinegar!!!
I love you Nick! I was about to lose my mind with this reassembly! lol!
"What I'm gonna do is drop a lil tiny bit of lubrication, THERE'S A HELICOPTOR OUTSIDE !, that's weird", he says in his classic nick voice, this is true comedy !
This is exactly what I needed, got sharpening stone slag in the pivot and NEEDED to get it out. Couldn't sent it to benchmades, I'm deployed and I want to learn how to sharpen anyways
Wow! Thanks, Nick. My 940 was getting a bit "sticking" (action) but this worked great!!! Back to expected drop shut with very little effort! I'm guessing from your title and logic that this would work as well for say, the mini-Osborne, the Valet -- ANY Axis lock, yes?
I call that feld stripping on mine works just fine 99% of the time good video Nick 👍
You are a fair unbiased reviewer as far as I can tell. So far there has been little said that would entice me to buy any of the Benchmade 940's. Nice design. Very poor quality control. Not worth the risk as far as I am concerned. Thanks for being honest.
You're like one of one to ever say that.
Thanks Nick very helpful love this knife.👍
Thanks Nick....Gotta a used 940-1 coming in soon and Im guessing that this will need to be performed
you sound like moe szyslak dude
Try putting the burr side of the washers towards the liner.
Is it a torx bit? if so what size(s) do I need? the opening mechanism on my 4300 is gummed up with something and will only open to about 90 degrees when I hit the button so I want to try to take it apart and clean whatever gunk is in the mechanism out so it will open all the way on its own like it's supposed to.
T6 and t10
Thanks Nick. Helpful vid.
This is how i clean every one of my Benchmade's
@daAnder71 Thank you SO SO SO MUCH!
Thanks
You're a hero Nick 👍🏻 #YouAreABrilliantMan
Huh. That was easier. Thank you for the video!
Question: Does it matter which side of the knife you push the pivot through? Also, how do I fix the pivot to where it doesn’t move back and forth if I’m pushing from both sides? I tighten it to try fixing it, but then I lose action. Thanks.
Hey nick, I have a question does it matter if I put the pivot screw through the other side of the handle (backwards), will it affect my 940 any different than normal?
Weird question lol… What kind of mat are you doing this on?
Fails to open knife twice in a row.
Shabazz: "That's pretty decent." 😂
I just got a new 940 do they all have blade play? Mine has it
axtra92 by blade play you mean a wiggle space? Send it to Benchmade for maintaince if you don’t mind rolling without your knife for a few days
Hey Nick, random question: If you had to choose between a Spyderco Lil' Native and the Spyderco Chaparral, which one would you pick?
Chaparral by a mile. And Boris is a great name.
Can this also be done on a ball bearing lock too? (Specially on a manix lightweight)
I lost a benchmade 5,000 on a fence line for 1.5 years and all I had to do to get it working right was 3-4 sprays of gun medic and a wipe down with a towel.
do omaega springs break?
Nice Bon Jovi reference
good video. thanks!
I’d think it’s the bushings. You said they had burs on them and didn’t sand them.
What tool did you use for the pivot screw?
t10 torx driver I believe
Thank you.
i need to buy some disassembly tools which are the best for all knives
oh thanks for letting me know
Everyone seems to like WIHA the best. Myself included. Highly recommended tools.
I like the Boker (made by wiha) set. You can get some more torque on the stubby handle. And the bits store in the handle
Nano 85 or 10?
What model is the other Benchmade from video?
one arthur 781 Anthem
Thanks !! 👍👍👍👍👍
How to clean the axis lock
Does any one know where I can get replacement washers for a griptilan???
Steven Black benchmade may send them to you
Merci
This tutorial just cut my lap time down to half. Stupid fast!
Something doesn't match for me, High end knives with no teflon washers only copper ones
Is this for real?
Me guy sounds like Ned from the simpsons
Will you be my Gary?
I’m still waiting for you to get the Enzo Birk 75
Me too!!
He needs the one with Desert Ironwood scales! S30v blade, full flat grind. They have it at dlt trading.
@@prestonscott5367
I don't like Scandi grind usually, but I got the Scandi with carbon scales, and I can't stop loving it!
Can you make a video real quick just to show it off?
@@prestonscott5367 sorry, I can't do that on RUclips. The Enzos are great knives though!
I have 3 Benchmade knives and every one of them have just a smidgen of blade play.
Paul Hughes me too
I just purchased my first, nakamura, and can vouch for zero blade play. The blades I handled before purchasing certainly had varying degrees of play. All blue class.
Just got a 940 for Christmas. It started rock solid (and a little stiff) but has developed a little side to side play as it broke in.
That was fast
I prefer the compression lock over the axis lock all day.
I’d just send it to Benchmade for 6$
What does Benchmade charge for when typically sending it back?
Aaaaayyyyhhhhh
Gilbert gottfried
Ya know, U could just Locktite the washer to the blade, then it would be easy to put back together, uhhu, oh ya!!
Cringe... its not an eninge rebuild...
why do you talk like this?
Axis lock is great, but this knife is so (f)ugly..
