A few floating plants like Salvinia would be nice. And Sid would like them.
You're one of the most knowledgeable and conscientious fishkeepers I've ever come across and I appreciate it so much. You actually care about enrichment as well as planning and providing great for them in their old age. Thank you for doing what you do and thank you for the *way* you do it.
I love Sid Fishious’ name 😂
Rachel deserves more likes!
Bonnie J agree
Agreed
Świetne akwarium, w sam raz dla bojownika.
Love your videos! If you decide to keep shrimp in the Fluval Spec again, try putting in a piece of mesh against the sponge filter to block any baby shrimp from getting sucked through.
Horned nerite snails saved all my algae problems! No problem with them getting out of hand since they only breed in brackish water!
That's great!! Keep up the good work!
Beautifull tank .
I'm currently cycling my fluval spec v, it's my first ever fully planted tank. Everything is going pretty well at the moment, though I'm having a little bit of trouble with some brown algae growing on some of my plants but I assume it's normal due to the tank not being matured/cycled. I'm also having a little bitnof with some white looking algae/fungus growing on my wood, after some research I found out that it's normal in new tanks, plus I didn't soak or boil the wood.
Thanks for all of the videos you have made!
Arenos Karlaen hi, I had a similar problem with brown algae on my planted tank (also first planted tank), took about 8 weeks to first appear and then started getting on everything, read somewhere to turn the light intensity down and make sure I was using ferts correctly. After some heavy cutting and regular dosing it went away. Just takes a bit of patience, when you get fed up and frustrated like I kept doing, just keep going, it’ll turn out alright
PHLuke 19 Thanks, I've begun to reduce the amount of time I've been leaving the lights on, I'm not dosing my tank with any ferts yet I'm waiting till I've got it cycled. I've managed to brush off some of the algae on the plants however, I have to be gentle as they haven't rooted fully yet. It's reassuring to know that it should go away if kept on top of, I'd probably panic if incident know and something would probably go wrong.
Arenos Karlaen my biggest conundrum when starting the tank was when to start dosing, but aquarium coop advised he starts straight away but from what I can tell it’s not as important the first few weeks but definitely something to look into. I must admit I’ve had a lot more ‘challenges’ doing my first planted tank than any before, not least accidentally setting off my fire extinguisher when setting up the co2 🙈 but I do love watching it grow now. Keep going 😀
Rachel. Tip for u next time you record your aquarium, turn off the lights in the room.. it helps with reflection. Otherwise beautiful aquarium
It's a lovely, little tank, MsJinkzd! Personally speaking, I don't think it needs anything. The bare spot with just that one twig adds some nice contrast. However, it is your tank, so definitely spruce it up however you find most appealing! Thanks for the tips, as always!
Hi Rachel, I have this tank for some Neon Tetras. I have the water flow on low, is that ok for the Tetras or is still too strong and should I shut it off?
looks great. I just got into aquariums last year and your videos have helped me alot. thank you.
Nice tank and little Sid looks great
looks clean and tidy :) love this little tank
Another piece or two of annubis on that one wood at the elbow and to would set that off nicely. IMO
Haha! thats a brilliant name!
Perfectly imperfect! Love it💕 love what you do. Keep it up!
I have three of these tanks. I love them. I want to get those pea puffers for my new Fluval Spec. I will be setting it up soon.
Hi Rachel, I was planning to get the Fluval Spec V for a colony of CRS, but I'm not so sure now, as you just said that the filter intake was swallowing your shrimplets. I was wondering if your Fluval Spec V the "revamped" version or the old one? Apparently Fluval phased out their old version mid 2016. Maybe the new version has a different intake :/
I am not sure, as its been running 2 years now. I know they have recently changed up and added a screen so that its less dangerous to baby shrimp
Haha, I've seen plenty of Betta that flare but Sid's the first one I've seen that has a 'flair' for decorating.
I love the wood in this scape, and the moss is looking super nice. I shrimp proofed my spec by glueing 2 little sponges on the bottom of the main sponge to act like stilts, so the main sponge is high enough to cover the intake
Lookin' great!! I am enjoying learning from all your videos!! I'm very excited to be adding more plants to my tanks & some wood too!! I'll be keeping my eye on your stock list ;)
Love that set-up squadup love is love always😎👌💪
First lol no views but 1 like RUclips is drunk
I recently got a 5 gallon tank for my Betta. I am curious about possibly adding tank mates. Would it work out to put in 3 pygmy Corys if I provided plants and hiding spots?
They are really much much happier in larger groups
I see. Would 5 or 6 of them be too much for a tank that size?
Can you please talk about lighting timing. How long should you leave your lights on per day to avoid algae growth? Thanks.
i have my lights on about 8 hours a day. I don't think there is a blanket answer for how long as there are so many variables that come into play- growth rate of plants, fertilization, substrate, maintenance routine, stocking density etc.
Do you have a Amazon wish list set up? Lighting, nets, shipping bags? This way we could order off the list and ship it directly to you ....just a thought....Sid fishous is so cute ....did you get to go see Joey's talk ? The weather was awful, sleet, snow, freezing rain unfortunately we couldn't make because of it
+Melissa Berry no. It's upon the to do list. I did finally get a p.o. box. Baby steps haha
+Melissa Berry and Yea, took me 4.5 hours but I made it to see joey :)
Oh my goodness...I'm glad you made it there and back home safe ...I'll keep an eye out for your wish list
what is the long stringy moss on the front of the wood piece on the left half of the tank?
Spikey moss
thanks!
You're your own toughest critic - play this back and just LOOK at that tank from the wide perspective. It's bloody gorgeous! It looks like a very interesting tree on a hill and an eerie sky behind it. Stunning. Sid is looking so happy - he's a lucky betta. Thanks for the tip on the ferts - that's a schedule a single mom can manage.
I'm an airhead so I very well missed it, but what kind of plant is that growing out of the filtration portion of the tank? I am always looking for new ideas for emersed/aquaponic plants..
Love the updates with the ongoing projects. Hi Sid!!!
Next tank you should try is a fluval flex tank 9 or 15 gallon the are quite awesome systems
Really beautiful tank! I wanna start growing some plants for my bettas soon and watching your videos on plants have really been helping.
I have the fluval spec 5g and I love it. I also have a betta and fake and live plants. Love your vids
greetz from poland :)
Gave me so many ideas on what to do with my Fluval Spec V (:
One thing you can do with the bottom hole into the filter is slide a piece of plastic between the baffle and the filter sponge. I did so on my Spec, it keeps the shrimplets in the tank. I also modified the filter, a plastic canvas piece holding filter floss on top of the sponge, while not stopping them from going in the filter section, prevents them from getting stuck and/or sucked in. Just kick them out before replacing the filter floss during the water change.
FMuscleZ28 I wedged a small piece of sponge in mine so water can still pass through very slowly
The plastic doesn't seal the hole. I always drain from the pump section when I do water changes, to avoid sucking shrimplets, and the display section drains with it.
Hi Rachel, I follow all your videos as do my kids. All the info you provide is outstanding, especially the outdoor tub series!
I've been holding back on this comment for sometime but here goes, You look fantastic! Did you loose weight? Wow you look great, keep it up!
yea, i changed my diet back in late august/early september and its really starting to pay off. thanks for noticing!
In my opinion, what you really need is some smallish tightly schooling fish to fill in the sky, the space that is going unused in the top fifth of the water column. How about little dwarf marbled hatchetfish or something that would skim the top? CID would not have much interest in them I wouldn't think, and they're plenty fast if he's in a nippy mood.
Dovey Dossett I think he's a fairly aggressive fish, while schooling fish are harder to single out and stress to the point of death, it could stress out Sid. It all depends on the betta, mine doesn't bug his bristle nose tank mate but he did pick fairly large ghost shrimp to death and he destroyed his bubble nest and wouldn't relax. They're divas.
I currently have the Fluval 5G Edge Aquarium and noticed couple things. One the filter is way over powered for the tank. I added U.P. Aqua Shrimp Sand and the HOB filter moves all the shrimp sand everywhere. I also noticed the LED light which comes with the tank built into the top is really under powered to grow anything for plants. I have yet to add shrimp to this tank which I plan on very soon.
Curtis T I have it too, I plan to put a little sponge over tube...
I love your channel you know your stuff. I was wondering If you would be up for a nano saltwater chalinge . As you don't have any saltwater . See if you can put together a nano tank for under $100. that will be for the new commer.
i have an unfair advantage
Why is it unfair to have a advantage any advantage you have is of your own making . I don't think that is unfair.
Looks good to me.
Hi Rachel, You should add some buc to those bare knuckles. It's nice and slow growing and will and a different shade of green to the tank. Maybe add a couple of assassin snails to keep the bladder snail population in check. I'm a big fan of the Spec V and it's always nice to see what other people do with theirs.
i like the ramshorn snails in the tank. there is a bunch of small buce in there- i just have to move things around so it looks a bit more cohesive. I was just making sure everything would survive, lol
Sid need a buddy. How depressing living your life with no one to share bubbles with :-S
he has amano shrimp friends
I just found out today, my landlord will not let me have a 10G or any fish tank. :( so bummed out right now.
Really? Not even 10 gallons?
how do you keep the water at the surface from getting scummy? I have the same tank and it gets terrible within 2 or 3 days of a water change
make sure that the filter discharge is angled up more
Thank you, looks good
Sid is such a character. 😊 I'm still battling ammonia 😔. I did a 50% water change yesterday and when I tested the water today, it had gone UP (AGH!!!). My kit is OK because my LFS got the same result when they tested my water when I first started having problems to rule out a wonky test kit, my new water has Zero ammonia (I've introduced a small amount of tap on their advice as I had been using remineralised R.O.). I've also double checked that I'm doing the test properly. I can't wait to for the new tank to come cos this one's got me and the end of my tether! 😄
Gaina my LFS had suggested dosing with Seachem Prime. You can try that
Amanda Vick Thank you Amanda! I've seen that product mentioned several times now so I think I may try it. I'm using Ammo-lock to convert it to ammonium, and adding slightly more bacteria than usual with the water change to try and get the beneficial bacteria to catch up. 😊
So... you are saying that, by 1/2 dosing with fertiliser, twice a week it gets rid of the hair algae?
i am saying by getting my maintenance back on track and dosing minimal fertilizer, it controlled the algae in this aquarium
How often do you water change the 5 gallon with sid ??
weekly 50% as stated in the video :)
while I much prefer the old spec set-up so much more...this new setup is ok...my fluval spec houses my shrimp and I have not had any issues with babies getting into the back filter area. best of luck in your new digs Sid.
the hydroctole just took over and required too much work. I need to add some more plants, but have to pick ones that won't require much work or it will just get neglected again. Stay tuned!
I have had several issues with shrimp getting into the filter area especially babies. The spec design is a little awkward as far as blocking these area without restricting filtration. Currently i have a little sponge over the intake side with some tough bread twisters holding it in place. How do you combat curious critters? Any help appreciated
You have tropica(danish company):-)i am Scandinavian. Do they sell Tropica products in the states? Or do you get it from Europe?
I sell them, and a few others. They have a North American office located in Canada. It is my favorite substrate by far.
Rachel O'leary wonderful. I Also love their products. It’s great that you sell:). New subscriber here.
Did you keep one of the other male Bettas?
+Cynthia Daniels nope. All given away
Can u do a video on bichir? I got a tiny baby dinosaur and i cant find many detailed videos on them
i did a species spotlight on them :)
I just found it and finished watching it thanks! Your video was very informative and it helped a lot! I love your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
Laughing so much at sid and the plants I have a feeling he thinks his a bird lol x
i have replanted them at least a dozen times, but he alwasy yanks them back up and places them in his bubble nest. Who am I to argue with his decorating asthetic?
Can’t miss the Tuesday Tips!!!!
i said i was going to stop doing them, but cannot let myself! Next week should be a goodie
Well we appreciate them!
